I have been on the birth control pill since 2004. I just turned 38 and have recently have lost a lot of hair. It happened after I was on Orthocyclen continuously for about a year. I am now scared to death that my hair will not grow back and that I will never be able to style my hair ever again. The pill used to cause the hair to grow back in and seemed to keep it from falling out but in the last 3-5 months it has fallen out and I'm not sure it will ever grow back. I am having premenopausal symptoms on the pill, mostly waking up early in the morning and having to pee. I just went back on it so maybe it will grow back in but I don't think so and am upset.

My hair products are not the cause. I use the gentlest sulfate free shampoo and an ionic hair dryer. I did bleach my hair this summer and have had to go back dark; that could have caused some of it but I doubt it caused most of the back of my hair and crown to fall out.

Hi, My name is Gail and I really feel for you. I started periomenopause about a year ago and that was one of my first symptoms. It seems like it happenend overnight. I woke up and my hair just started falling out and the texture had completely changed. I was devastated. I have always had long thick silky hair all of my life. And now I have since cut my hair short and still can't really work with it. It never looks good. I am 49 years old and this is so hard for me to deal with. Half the time I don't want to leave my house. I was always a person on the go. I know it has to have something to do with my hormones being messed up. I have to be lacking something. My gyn just put me on the pill for that reason, to make my hair stop from falling out. I hope it does not make it worst. My hair seems to be falling from the back of my head also. It's very strange. I have spent hundreds of dollars of hair products within the last 6 months. Nothing seems to work. I would be happy to chat with you if you would like to email me. MY email is gac422@hotmail.com Take Care

Thanks Gail. I have just moved back to Albuquerque and am trying to put my life back together. Tomorrow I may go have my hair recut to get rid of the bad Supercuts last minute hair cut I got before my move.... tongue.gif There is a doctor who specializes in hair loss named Geoffrey Redmond. He's written a couple of books; the Hormonally Vulnerable Woman is at most Borders and Barnes and Nobles. He uses the birth control pill and spironolactone for hair loss. He also helped develop the pill I am on, Orthocyclen.

I have also read a couple of books by Elizabeth Vliet who has a clinic in Tucson, Arizona. She has similar approaches as Dr. Redmond except that she is very anti soy. I have found her view about soy to be true. My hair loss increases whenever I add it to my diet. The mystery now is why the pill which turned my hair loss around 4 years ago is now causing it to fall out. My scalp is very itchy and feels weird.

I would go to Dr. Vliet if I had the money.

Dear catrinac

I too have suffered hair loss but it seems to have equalised itself now.I take a lot of Olive Oil on salds and on bread and maybe it is helping.I have also suffered that dreadful itchy scalp sensation.I really though I had lice and asked my daughter to check out my scalp.Nothing!Just red from scratching.
I switched to Johnson.s baby Shampoo plus a light conditioner. It helped. Also when the itching was really bad I would use an antihistamine like Benadryl and got some relief.

This is all hormonal and will eventually even out.I keep my hair cut short and finger dry and style.

Wish you luck,my friend

I am on the pill and had an episode of heavy shedding.I cut my hair short, wash it less, took b vitamins and drank green tea every day.The hair loss slowed greatly, and I am still on my pill.GODbless

Fellow shedders:

I too am struggling with this problem. Yes, I do believe that it is largely hormone generated but can also be related to thyroid issues. Many peri symtpoms mimic those of thyroid and visa versa.

My Girlfriend (Russian) has discovered a product, like a tlc, that you smear on your head and guess what? Hair grows!!! Her Husband has been stealing from her everymorning...
We know how the Russians are obsessed with youth and beauty at all costs, and she finds the most incredible products (although they do cme with a high price tag) I have been taking Biotin (B7) for aabout 6 weeks now and do notice firming of the fine baby hairs by my crown and better texture overall.
As soon as I find out the name of the product, I'll post it.

thanks skeeweeaka

which fish oil brand do you take?

I tried the gnc double strgenth (or something like that) omega fish oils and they made me have disgusting fish burps - I almost vomited at work! How gross!

Which do you take and does it have this effect on you?

Also what stregnth biotin do you take? I recently started taking the 5000 mg stregnth.

thenks and sorry for spelling mistakes - have never figured out how to use the spell check on this thing - LOL

Nordic Naturals. I find it at the Health Food Store.... I think it recommends 1 teaspoon full but I take 1 tablespoon full! I take the liquid and eat an orange afterwards to kill the taste or usually eat my breakfast afterwards too... I take 5000 strength Biotin twice a day! Hope that helps you and someone else....

Hi - I hope you find a solution to your situation. Have you had your thyroid checked?
