Has anyone treated with a neuromuscular dentist for TMJ problems? If so, what was the initial assessment like, what kind of treatments did you receive and were the treatments beneficial?

I'm sorry I didn't respond. I feel so bad when mine go unanswered. Anyway, I have tmj in both jaws the left being the worst. I do no have dental insurance, so I use heating pads, and occasionally ibuprofen if its' really bad. It is very annoying and I would love to do something else. Let me know if you do this and how it worked for you.

I hope you feel better. I know it is awful.

I don't have insurance either. I'm having a major flare. It even hurts to hold the phone to my ear and I have had a headache since last Saturday. I love my dentist to death but I feel like he just keeps putting a band aid on it by adjusting my night guard, that is $100 per visit. I was just curious if this neuromuscular dentistry is anything more than quackery.

I am sorry yo are in such pain. I can relate to the phone thing. It happens to me all the time. I have pain behind my ear as well. Try a heating pad, at least it feels good, maybe it doesn't really work, but the temporary relief does.

I hope you feel better. Sleeping is rough too when you can't lay down on that side, right?

Yes, I can't sleep on either side. I have a moist heat pack that is soothing while it is on, but the second it comes off the pain is back. I'm living on Fioricet. It turns the headache and neck pain down a notch. Vicodin helps the TMJ pain some. I feel like such a druggie. Thanks for answering, it helps to know someone else is battling the same problems. I have health insurance that will pay for some physical therapy and x-rays, but that is it. Dental insurance does not pay for any of it. I'm out over $3000 in the last 3 years. Physical therapy helped a little, but the gal I saw knew nothing about TMJ. She was more interested in my neck. Have you tried or considered chiropractic?

I have never tried the chiropractor, not sure if the insurance I have covers it. I did 4 treatments of acupuncture and it did help, but once again, at $50 a visit, it's too much to do. I hope you feel better today.

Thanks. No headache today so that is a step in the right direction. This so frustrates me that insurance won't pay for most TMJ treatment. I found a specialist, he charges $475 for a 30 minute consult plus $175 if x-rays are necessary. That is a ridiculous amount of money to spend for no treatment. I know the $50 here, $100 there really adds up. Thanks again for your support.
