Full Version: What is normal postmenopausal discharge?

Hi ladies!
I've not had a period in a year and have been somewhat dry. For the last couple of days I've noticed the stringy, clearish mucus that used to be my normal vaginal discharge. That hasn't been evident for about a year. Is that normal for postmenopause? I'd sure be glad to not be completely dried up, but have never heard anyone talk about the return of "normal". I'm hoping it's evidence of things beginning to even out after a very rocky couple of years. What do you think?

ThiS SAME thing happened to me over a couple of months last spring-- and I even had a pink tinge of mucous eventually (like a weird period-- because it last 5 days...but, the pink tinge was just that, a tinge, and I did not even need a pad....welllllllllllllllllllllll- it turns out after a year, I ovulated a couple of times- which of course made me feel great-- no nasty symptoms, after almost a year of hel!!-- the reason I know I ovulated is because my GYN had blood work done, and also a pelvic ultrasound which showed a cyst-- from ovulation. I had to wait to see if it would resolve on its own (it did)-- My gyn explained that is it quite common for our ovaries to make one last hurrah after about a year...so manybe this is what is happening to you--

I did not have any symptoms of an infection, or something else-- I felt great.

Hope this helps -

Thanks for your reply Jonesy! We'll see how this plays out. One thing I haven't heard much about is whether or not one should have a little clear "normal" discharge after menopause. I would think and hope so but I never hear anyone talk about it and haven't read anything about it. Do you know?

Dear Donna
Have had the spotting like'Jonesy' but all turned out to be normal and the Gyno.really did not have any answers except to wisely nod his head and say"Menopause"seems to be a funny thing!

Also have clear discharge most days and was told as long as it is clear and does not have a bad odour, then again perfectly normal.

hope this helps
Blessings

I thought the stringly, clearish mucus was a sign of ovulation. It's 10/11 months since my last period and I never had that mucousy discharge since I stopped having regular periods until ... I started using estriol cream vaginally to combat vaginal atrophy and when I apply the cream up near the cervix, I get the stringly mucous. I read on this forum that it's the cervix that produces that mucous in response to estrogen.

I went a whole year without a period and then started getting the clear mucous like stuff again, which seemed to lead up to 5 days of light pink/red spotting, mainly on wiping.

I am wondering if that is a last 'hurrah' as since then I have had no more clear mucous like stuff.....maybe?

Same thing here.
I'm post by over a year and was pretty dry for most of that time. Just in the past few months I have noticed a normal discharge and even more recently, what I would describe as ovulation discharge (clear, stringy stuff) and the accompanying "ouch" in the ovaries.
I am almost waiting for a period now!

Who know what the heck is going on in there. I'm tired of trying to figure it all out......;-)
