I am currently on Lexapro. Dr. was kind enough to give me lots of free samples, but I won't ask him for anymore. I know Lexapro is very expensive and until I am working again, I won't be able to afford all of my meds.
I am wondering how many have tried Celexa, how effective they were for you and what were the worst side affects?
Thanks a bunch!

Tidal....Celexa is like the sister of Lexapro. When Celexa had been on the market for several years and they were finally able to sell it in the generic brand the company came out with Lexapro. My 92 year old MIL was put on Celexa almost a year ago when she lost her first born son. It worked wonderfully for her and it is actually quite inexpensive. The Lexapro cannot be sold as a generic which drives up the cost of it. Since they are both pretty similar I would think that if you were able to take the Lexapro just fine that you should have no problem with Celexa.

My neighbor takes generic Celexa. In AZ you can get it through WalMart, Walgreens, Target...under the $4/month Rx plan. A real bargain. Might be worth checking to see if your local drugstores offer a similar deal. There's a list of all the medications they offer on the web..

I took Celexa several years ago, after the death of my mother. I tolerated it very well - which is saying alot, because I am very sensitive to medications. It also worked well for my depression. If you are tolerating the Lexapro, you should have no trouble with Celexa.
Good luck!

Gramz and she beast,
Thank you both so very much for responding with that information! I was so afraid I was going to have to stop taking my meds until I become gainfully employed again and not knowing much about AD's, I was at a total loss as to what to do.
I have that Wal-Mart list, she beast, but I had no idea what any of the generic names were until you mentioned it and I looked it up and yes, the generic Celexa is on it.
Thanks again ladies! You're the best!!

Di,
Thank you so very much also! You and I must have been responding at exactly the same time cause I missed you the first time.
I have been so scared to try anything but the Lexapro, but until I have insurance that will cover it, I have no choice but to go with the Celexa or the generic brand of it.
Helps relieve my mind to know others have done well on it.
Thanks a bunch!!

Hi O2B, That's exactly what I asked my dr. for and I think I like it even better than the Lexapro!!
Even though I haven't cut a path down the highway yet, I am way more energetic than I have been in a very long time!!
I say HURRAY for drugs!!!!

P.S. Great info on the Celexa/Lexapro thing. I am currently on Lexapro 10 mg. but did not realize the Celexa connection. Good info to have if I ever need the generic. Keep us posted on how the Celexa works for you ladies.

Lexapro is a COMPONENT taken OUT of Celexa actually. Celexa does have more to it but my sis has taken it for years with no probs.

Now if I could only take it....sadly, I found I can't do ANY ad's at all....

My same exact situation. I am looking at 2 boxes of Lexapro(samples) which I am afraid to begin because there is NO way I can afford 53$ a month for threse. I am on other meds...so this added expense would be too much...I know there is no generic for this..and from what I read your saying the Celexa is basically the same?? anyone get fat taking it??? I lost 211 lbs. 25 years ago.....and I have been 118lbs....for aLL THESE YEARS, i AM TERRIFIED OF ENDING UP LIKE ONE OF MY FRIENDS WHO GAINED 80 lbs from antidepressants. Have any of you had any major side effects....do u take it in the morning or night? I don't want to feel all zombi like, but I have a major issue with anything caffienated.....I hate that fast pounding heartbeat...
50% of my depression/anixiety is from all this perimenopause, but I also have some issues with losses in my family lately....and right before my period I am INSANE/Angry for at least 10 days.

Hi all,
I'm on 20 mg. Citalopram (generic Celexa), and have noticed that it seems to be pooping out in treating the anxiety, moodiness etc. Does it help anyone with the hot flashes? What dose are others on, and has anyone upped the dose with good results?
Thanks for any input!

I have been on 20mg of Citalopram for a few months. I like this med as I have tried just about every other AD on the market, including the tricyclic types.
My anxiety and depression haven't gone, but are much better. I have felt like going out, and l have been laughing too!
The first two weeks were pretty bad, though. I felt weak and exhausted (I always do but more so, lol). I had no appetite either but am glad that I stuck with it.
I NEED this drug at the moment...and am thankful for it.

I have been taking celexa now for 4 months and I haven't had any bad side effects, now at first I was tired on it but that wore off..
It hasn't completely took away all the anxiety but It sure has helped, I'm much calmer now than what I was, and so far no weight gain.
However I was on the Lexapro for 2 years and gained 80 lbs and I gained it fast...
