Sometimes I feel like I have an electrical buzzing current feeling going through parts of my body. Is this internal shaking or another separate peri symptom?

I get that buzzing feeling usually when I wake up at night. It centers in my chest. What's weird it will "go off" for a few seconds (like someone pulled the plug on the vibrator) and start right back up. It is so annoying and hard to get back to sleep. Getting a good night's sleep is my most allusive need.

Does anyone else (besides lucky me) have that buzzing sensation in their face that never seems to go away? I have had this for 10 months now and at first I thought it might be from coming off Premarin. I hope that it is because of meno and nothing else. I am starting to get concerned. However, I guess it could be the Hashimoto's thyroiditis that I was diagnosed with about 10 weeks ago. The doctor is still adjusting my medication. I did not know that thyroid conditions (hyper and especially hypo) are so prevalent during menopause--so ladies PLEASE have that checked. So many of the symptoms that I was blaming on meno were really due to hypothyroidism. Anyway, if you have this buzzing all the time please let me know--that will certainly make me feel better! Hugs to all of you.Ga Girl

Hi all, I don't know if this has anything to do with perimenopause or not. I have had constantly buzzing legs for 4 years now. I have had a neuro work-up, and the only thing that's a little off is my ferritin level. My neuro doc said that even slightly low ferritin levels can manifest as strange sensations like buzzing.........so make sure your ferritin isn't low. If it is, take iron supplements. I have fibromyalgia, and many of us have this "buzzing" in various parts of our bodies. Some people find relief by taking the B vitamins...........B complex and also a sublingual B12 tablet (1000 mcg of methylcobalamin).... It wouldn't hurt to try some of these vitamins to see if your buzzing and other similar sensations went away. Also, calcium and magnesium supplements can be good if the problem is with the muscle. Good luck! I know how disconcerting it can be.

+I am getting strange crawling sensations (pins and needles) in my feet and legs! They were really scaring me until I read of the symptoms of internal shaking associated with premenopause. i notice that if I don't think of them, it seems to decrease! Hope this helps and I welcome any other ideas to rid self of these.

I need help! I have posted before about the buzzing and/or tremors. I think I remember someone posting about this really bad in their head. I have this in my face, but what worries me is that when I lay down, I feel this sensation a whole lot worse. It seems like it is in my entire head area. Is there anyone else out there that has this and it seems to go on constantly? I am beginning to get worried. Please let me know if I am not the only one. Thank all of you sweet sweet ladies for all the encouragement and wealth of information.Ga Girl

I recently spoke with a Doctor at a PMS clinic that also supports menopausal symptoms and when I mentioned that I just started to get the Internal shakes,I was told that when your Thyroid is undeactive it brings on the shakes. SO I am now taking the thyroid tempereture test for 5 days.
I was also told that if your TSh level was around 3.3 and lower that Thyroid medication is required. I had been on thyroid medication a few years ago and I felt wonderful , but then another doctor took me off. So maybe there is something to this. I am going to try it. I will try almost anything to feel better. Will keep you up dated

I am glad I found this web site just last week I had a vibrational feeling up inside my vagina I wasn't sure if it was my uterus, my bladder.....I didn't know I still am going to go to the doctor to have him check out. It has happened a few times since. Just so you know it does not seem to be sexually related at all. Its just wierd....and when I told my hubby about it he just gave me a strange look. This has never happened to me before in my whole life! I am on Armour Thyroid do you think I need to up my dose?

Hi,
I read your message about tingling or buzzing in your head and face. It too have this especially at night or when I lay down. It's like my face and scalp go to sleep. It bothers me so much I can hardly sleep. Mine started in Jan of 2002 when my hand started to go numb and then tingle. My ear also started to ring. I was convinced I had some terrible disease like MS or even a brain tumor. Had MRI and all was normal. I didn't know anyone else ever had this kind of thing. I also have the classic meno. symptoms hot flashes, dryness and all the other. Have tried HRT but am afraid to use them. Had some side effect when I was on them. Now I am trying the natural stuff. Not having much luck. I guess I am post meno. haven't had a period in 14 months. I am 50 yrs. old Sure helps to know there are others out there who know what it's like to go through this. I wonder if I will ever feel normal again?

Hi Karenann
Don't worry----you'll definitely live through this "OH SO WONDERFUL" transition. I was a little hysterical too, at first, until I discovered this God-send of a board. So many other women are going through the same things and it helps so much to hear their stories. I get the electrical buzzing feeling in my head too. Not all the time, but when it happens I start to panic and imagine all sorts of terrible things. It's hard to put into words, but I've posted elsewhere on the boards and tried to describe it as putting my finger into an electrical socket and getting that brrrrrrrrr feeling (only in my head). I don't get hot flashes yet, but have been getting some mild night sweats. I'm in peri--------but haven't had a period in 3 months, so maybe this is it. It's no fun, I know, but we'll live. I find that herbal teas help me when I'm really feeling anxious. Take care and visit often. These boards are a great comfort.

Hi, I too have been experiencing lately, feelings of electrical jolts in my head. I use to get more of a buzzing or numb feeling but lately it is like someone is zapping me.It it a little tender too to the touch. What next????I am postmenopausal, and just when I thought I was about done, now this.... A friend told me it could be relatedto sinus problems, but it is in the back left hand side.Does anyone else get this weird feeling??

Nov 25 2002, 10:15 AM
Oh yes, buttercup! Back left-hand side and tender to the touch. I demanded a ct scan because I just knew I had a tumor or something. Tests came back normal but I still get it, along with dizziness.......I have no clue! My neck is also stiff and tight so maybe that's where it's coming from, or else it's lack of hormones to a certain part of my brain? I don't know.......just one more of the many symptoms of menopause?

Greetings Kari,Well I am glad that I am not the only one, and I can chalk it up to another symptom.! Phew!! Yes the area is very tender as well, It could be hormonal deficiency, I started to wean off my estrogel more than a month now, first it wasevery other day, then every 3rd day, cutting the dose in half, now I may take 1/2 the dose about once a week. Like you all sorts of things go through my mind, a stroke,a tumour, it is very scary at times, till you know that it is yet another symptom. Why is it some ladies experience1 or 2 of the 34 symptoms, and then there is me who I am sure have had at least 20 or more. Oh, what's the use ofcomplaining...can't do much, tried being very positive andnot approaching the symptoms with a gloom and doom thought.People say, just be positive and look at it as just anotherwonderful journey in life....Been there done that, butlo and behold here comes another symptom. How much longer can it go on, I will be starting my 6th year soon, must bea light soon at the end of the tunnel.

I hear ya buttercup!! I think the only symptom I didn't get was the "ants crawling under the skin feeling", but then again the panic attacks were so bad that I couldn't concentrate on anything else.
I've wondered the same thing about why some of us suffer with a bunch of horrid symptoms and others don't. I've gotten that blank look from some women who had 2 hot flashes and it was over. I know they're thinking it's all in my head but I can guarantee they'd be singing a different tune if it were them getting the strange and horrible symptoms.
I'm still using my estradiol/progesterone cream and don't plan coming off of it yet. I'm so afraid of ending up in the ER again. Those heart palps and panic attacks just about did me in.

I was recently THROWN OUT of an emergency room when I arrived with a full blown shake/tremor episode. My pulse was up to 115.My jaw was so spasmed it was pushed out of place to the other side.My whole left side was spasmed and I had a huge shaking episode where I could not think clearly and had trouble putting my thoughts together. The ER doctor decided that I was a psychiatric patient and she shot me up with Dilauded and Phenegran after I told her not to give me Dialuded because I was extermely allergic to Morphine. The Doctor argued with me about my "supposed " allery and gave me the shot anyway. To make a long and longer story short, I had a terrible allergic reaction and went on to nausea and vomiting for hours. I of course freaked out on the Dilauded and then I really was crazy for a while and I got thrown out of the hospital because I told the doctor I didn't trust her and that I wanted to see another doctor.I was told another docotr was not available to see me and unless I took the next shot the doctor wanted to give me then I would be forced to leave the hospital. So they escorted me out and also refused to get me transport to another hospital when I kept saying that I was having an allergic reaction and needed medical help. And of course puking all the while. Some times air and sometimes body fluid.I went to another hospital after that(still in my hospital gown) and they took me in immediately and treated me for an allergic reaction. My urine function stopped and I had to be put ona catheter, I had to be on Steroids for 4 days and I was treated for dehydration and took almost 2 bags of saline for my pulse to even get down to 101.I went to the cardiologist a few days later and my vital signs were still so bad that we could not do the treadmill stress test. My pulse is still dangerously bad and I'm now on new BP meds.I've also tested with severe blood sugar drops and I'm taking an anti diabetic medication.Yep, it can get rough. Most of my problems are not such a mystery. It's pretty much linked to genetics in my case. The family has massive amounts of everythingfrom hypertension to female cancer.yep all that and diabetes too.And while I don't have diabetes yet, I am told that if my pancreas goes on overproducing insulin it will eventually wear itself out and then I probably will develop Diabetes like the rest of my family. So, for the now I've opted for medication preventative maintenance. So ladies, get the body systems checked. Espectially if thre is genetic possibilities. My best friend turned out to be the home BP kit.A marvelous little miracle to tell you when the body is in serious need of medical attention. It has literally saved my life.Good health to all.Kamie

When I started HRT, I also started on vitamins from the health store., "Ultimate One for women" multi vitamins. Then I ran out two weeks ago, and never bought any...well the internal shaking started, I have a tremor in my head and left arm also anxiety attacks but this internal shaking is something else. I get it when I get up in the morning...I was wondering if it is because I smoke, that makes it worse. i went and bought the vitamins last week, and I think the shaking is getting better. It is very hard to drive when feeling like this. When I ran out of the vitamins I also noticed my moods went berserk, my daughter would phone and say are you in a better mood today!! I just tell her my hormones aren't working right, I'm having an internal problem. I live in B.C., Canada....Kathy

Since my episode w/ the shaking and now being on anti diabetic medication, I would say that making sure you are not dropping to low and lower lows w/ blood sugar might be a good idea. The only way to accurately know is with the Glucose Tolerance Test (GTT)That particular test is a two part test that requires two blood draws. Make sure you have a driver with you because if blood sugar happens to be the culprit you might not want to be driving after the test since they make you drink a heavy Glucose solution.I've also read something recently about the problem being a magnesium deficiency but I can't remember where I saw the article. You might want to pop in "Magnesium Deficiency" into a search engine and take a look.If you feel better w/ a multi vitamin, then take a look on the bottle and see what it has for magnesium on the ingredient list.I'm supposed to be taking milk of magnesia for my bowels. After my hysterectomy my bowels stopped working and the Gastroenterologists office suggests MoM every day because my condition went to life threatening and required emergency surgery.Un fortunately I get the cramp gut with MoM and since I already have to take medication for the gut spasms that's not a good thing. So I only take the MoM occasionally and I'm using chewables right now to try and work with tolerance to the substance.Magnesium will indeed give you the runnies if you don't take it with calcium. That's why it is recomended for patients with Irritable Bowel w/ constipation.Calcium is recomended for people with Irritable Bowel with diarreah. Also, MoM, if you do have a chronic condition that warrents a lot of laxatives is one of the few substances that won't wreck the colon. Senna as a laxative is one of the worst for wrecking the colon.Hope the shaking gets better. There are so many things that could be at the root of the problem. When it's complex I have often found it's a few things more than just one.Take care and good healing,Kamie

Hey,
Just a quick THANKS to you all for posting on this board. I have been 'buzzing' and 'vibrating' for almost a year now. For the buzzing, I find that Nature's Sunshine's homeopathic formula "Menopause" seems to help. It's brutal the week before my cycle starts. My challenge is these freaking anxiety attacks--feel llike I can't even go to the store without having a complete meltdown. SSRI's are no help--in fact, made it worse. With the buzzing and the tingling, it seems that if I try not to think about it, it goes away. But with the anxiety, it's hard not to. Furthermore, those of us who get REALLY wound up, will find that their extremities fall asleep more easily due to the constrictions of the muscles and thus the cutting off of oxygen to the body. I myself, feel as though I have been in a constant state of "Fight or flight" for months. It's exhausting. I sleep great, but during the day, I'm wound up tighter than Presely's pants--so to speak. Great huh? My RX: Try yoga. Seems to help create some openings and let off STRESS!!!!! High protein too!!
Thanks again, I know this is all too familiar, but I know now that I'm not loosing my mind!!
God Bless!

I've been having headaches off and on (mostly on) for the last 5-6 months. They have been like a kick to the head, thought I was doing better till yesterday when I had a resurgence of "bad" headache (behind my right ear) and it too is somewhat tender to the touch. Had all the tests-I'm 52 and must be perimenopausal. Never had trouble with headaches before in my life. Went to the health food store tonight and bought some feverfew tea to try. Also started using progesterone cream 1 1/2 weeks ago. Desperately looking for any help as doctor does not seem to have a clue how to help. Anyway, I hope you find some relief and answers soon. By any chance are you taking an SSRI (as I've seen some reports of brain zaps with using them)?

I have suffered with this brain zap sensation for about 6 months now. I even posted under the headache boards. I was sure it was a tumor. Scares the pants off of me when it hits. At times it will follow with alot of tingling on my scalp and then the area is sensitve to the touch. I try not to let it scare me to much, or else the anxiety goes threw the roof.

Well I feel a little better after reading these posts, I have been getting annoying sensations in my left leg in the front and sides, feels like half numb and yet something tingling, I use to think the circulation was poor, this has been happening for about a year or more now I find my big toes sometimes feels half numb as well, It is all on my left side, at times my head feels like a buzz going on, then my left arm, almost like a pinched nerve causing it to feel tingly, I am not even sure these are the right way to describe them, I was worried it had nothing to do with menopause, but after reading some posts not sure still. After awhile (7 years now) you tend to blame all symptoms on the big "M" What do you ladies do to help with the feelings. I take Calcium/Magnesium pills now, Any suggestions? HELP:(:(

Since finding this wonderful forum a few days ago, I've been reading through the symptoms of peri and this is the one that was a real revelation. That ****ing electric buzzing sensation -- I had no idea!! About 2 or 3 years ago (would have been age 42-43 at the time) this suddenly became a problem for me. It was so weird -- a definite electric "buzzing" in my head and neck. AND I'd feel quite nauseous at the time. I certainly wasn't good for much while that was going on.
The first episode was the worst and it lasted about 2 weeks. I'm a pretty obsessive exerciser and it was so bad that I simply could not workout for several days (rare for me, and upsetting - I always feel like my life is spinning out of control if I can't exercise). It finally went away but returned from time to time in shorter, milder episodes -- finally tapering off entirely (at least for now). I can't tell you how I worried about it, but I was afraid to go the doctor because I was absolutely certain of being patronized and accused of having another psychosomatic complaint (as happened when I went in for palpitations and gastro issues). If I had only known it was a peri symptom, I think it would have removed the anxiety component and I could have handled it just fine. D'OH!
Just knowing what's going on makes such a difference. At least if I ever experience the internal shaking (which sounds rather disturbing!) I'll recognize it for what it is. And for that, I thank you most sincerely.

On the buzzing or internal shaking, I get this from my waist down when my pain medication stops working every 12 hours. It lasts about an hour or so. I have a lower back spinal cord injury so my buzzing is in my lower body and legs.
You people with headaches and the people with face buzzing, you could possibly have cervical spine or neck problems?

I thought I had the sensations because of my bp but I think my bp was high because I was freaked. Normally my bp is right about 120/80 and when it is high it is no more than 140/90. Very scary feelings but I'm glad to know I'm not dying.

Hello everyone!
This is the first time that I have commented on this site and I only discovered the reference to "buzzing" last night. I have never been so relieved! You have no idea how many people have looked at me as if I was completely insane for the past 18 months as I have tried to explain what you have called "buzzing" here.
I am a woman who had endometriosis and took a low dose birth control pill from March 1995 until February 2007 in order to regulate my hormones and control the very painful symptoms of endometrial implants along the urethral path. On Valentine's Day 2007 I stopped taking the Pill "cold turkey" because my OB/Gyn said that we needed to see where I was in my menopausal cycle. I should have been put on a weaning off cycle, was not given one, and didn't find one online until after I had my menopause train wreck.
By March 5, 2007, I had begun to have cognitive, vasomotor, sleep disturbance problems. I insisted on being given 1mg of Estradiol and ordered a natural progestrone cream for those symptoms and by the end of April, more or less, I was doing substantially better and I could sleep again. The one symptom that was left and extremely noticeable I described as follows to the doctor:
--Take a teapot full of water
--Put it on the highest flame
--Allow the water to come to its highest boil
--Turn down the flame to the lowest possible level to maintain a CONSTANT LOW BOIL
--Boil for 19 months with absolutely no explanation 24/7
--notice it EVERY morning and EVERY evening upon waking up and before falling asleep
--notice it during the day from time to time
Start having panic attacks and being convinced that I am going to die of a heart attack
Go to the ER more times than should ever have been necessary
Insist on seeing the cardiologist and being evaluated for heart problems
Force my husband to drive me to the ER in a panic
Take more benzodiazepines than should have been necessary
Have both male and female general practitioners, OB/Gyns, ER doctors, dentists, and ENT doctors behave as if I'm a nut case rather than a woman experiencing fairly common--if your website testimonials are to be believed--symptoms of menopause
I can actually tell that my symptoms are relatively mild compared to some women's, which is perhaps the first time I have felt that way since this whole ordeal began in February 2007. If I had known 18 months ago, I would have had, perhaps discomfort, but not the level of fear and panic that I have sustained during that period of time. It goes without saying that I am angry that even OB/Gyns trivialize this issue, unless they are specializing in what then becomes a very lucrative business--treating women who are at their wits' end due to, predominantly, hormonal changes.
I have continued to work at the same job that I have had for 11 years but there is an extent to which all this distress has damaged my relationships with my female coworkers. None of them is menopausal yet, so I look like the odd woman out. I also feel like the odd woman out. I probably look like I feel, like Mr. Rochester's crazy wife chained up in the attic in "Jane Eyre."
Now that I have read a few of your posts, I feel a lot better. I think that I will be able to get off the clonazepam that I have been taking for the past two weeks. The whole ordeal has made me get organized about reducing my time at work, reinforcing my relationship with my very fine new GP, getting a psychologist with whom to talk on a regular basis, and I think that I will be able to get back to taking my nutritional supplements, including 5HTP and GABA, pretty soon.
Thank you very much for your wonderful resource. I'm only sorry that it took me so long to find it. I will definitely tell everyone I know about it. A sanity saver!

WOW! Sounds like "I" could have written this...its my story too. Thank goodness most of the symptoms have run their course...still I linger with internal shaking and often wonder if its something more SERIOUS. Then I convince myself that its hormones still controlling my life. I wish us all a sense of calm and well-being as we are fast approaching the holidays. Deb

I am not sure what happened but I guess my last post didn't go through. I have a lot of the same symptoms that everyone is posting here. I have cried all day thinking that I am going crazy. Or that something terrible is really wrong with me and maybe there is but this site sure makes me feel better. My question is I am 41, have never had children and didn't start my cycle until I was 14 years old and until recently was taking OrthoCyclen birth control, so can my symptoms be perimenopause? I have read a few posts about the "buzzing" sensation in the vagina area and I truely felt like I was the only one that ever had this feeling. I know my longtime boyfriend thinks it is all in my head a long with a few doctors that I have visted too. I have been to the ER 4 times with some of these symptoms and they have diagnosed me with GERD, vertigo, sinus infections, stress, etc. I have the feeling of doom that I am going to die and the doctors have done blood tests and EKG's, Xrays, you name it and they don't find anything wrong with my heart and the last few weeks I have been having palpitations and the feeling that I have drank too much caffeine. The wierd part about that is that I don't drink anything but water. Well I hope I haven't rambled on. I am new at this but was just so interested in reading everyone's posts I thought I would drop in. Thanks and I hope everyone has a great evening. Steph

I have been experiencing buzzing through my body now for over 2 years on and off. i am 44 and it drives me crazy. i also experience a hum noise in my head a pressure in my ears. i don't know whether it is all related. there are other sites on the web about the "hum". might be interesting for some here who experience this buzzing since alot of people who experience the hum also experience the buzzing sensation through their body. i tend to think we are going through hormonal changes that make us more susceptable to electrical fields and current in our atmosphere. Anyway to all interested google hum and go to the hum forum. rubybeth

Going back over teese is a real lifesaver for me. I have had the buzzing, electric things in my eyes before the day about two years ago. Freaked me out, had a brain mri and all was clear. WEll, it started up agin, but at night, when I am trying to sleep. It is awful. then i get anxious and my whole body tenses and twitches, but mostly my eyes and ears. It is so good to read that I am normal. I shouldn't worry since when I had it bad before and was tested all was fine, so why do I worry now?
It' s getting old, all this worrying. I am trig to stay calm, but am just sick of it.
Any other help would be appreciated. I feel like a hypochondriac.

Sometimes I feel like I have an electrical buzzing current feeling going through parts of my body. Is this internal shaking or another separate peri symptom?
glad to hear that is not only me. I thought "What is going on?". I/m sorry this happening to you but glad to know i'm not having some type freak out thing.

I have been having this electrical zap feeling for quite awhile now, especially at night. It's like an electrical current goes through my whole body....starts out real soft, then gets very hard, then goes away.I'm not sure where it starts, but it does go through my entire body.
That's me ! That's me! had it for sooooooooooooo long now!. No one believes me though and my doctor thinks i'm a bit mad. I have been checked out for everything and they've found nothing. Great symptom this! I wish it would stop though. XX
