Hi Ladies,
Not really sure where to post this (put it on the am I starting perimenopause topic, but not really related) ..but I have been noticing something with myself and I wanted to see if anyone else can relate...
I have been looking at my calendar and I am noticing that I am getting these weird hypnic jerks or myoclonic jerks at the time of ovulation along with weird sleep things...like zapping through my body at night, flashes of light or noises in my head at night also. I will get these jerks for several nights in a row while I am ovulating and a few days before my cycle. I will get these jerks several times a night and for some reason they hit my abdominal area the worst, which sets off my anxiety. My Neurologist and my family doctor think it is a form of Restless Leg Syndrome or muscle spasms..although the Neurologist did mention it being Myoclonic Jerks?? Does anyone know anything about that? Is that bad?
I have tried searching the internet to see if there is a connection, but I could not find anything..so I am hoping some of you ladies may be able to shed some experiences of advice as to what I am experiencing??
I trust this board more than my doctors!!!
Hope I am not alone on this..yikes!

Hi Sunny
I am copying an entry I made under 'Am I losing my mind' and then 'Snapping Sensation in head and other wierd things?'. I only posted this yesterday please have a look at the whole blog because I think you will find the replies very helpful. This is the bit I entered:-
Hi
I am new on this forum and I have to say it is so reassuring to hear others stories and experiences. I am 48 and had hyst (kept ovaries) last october. since then I have had a history of one symptom after another which I think is relating to my hormones fluctuating. I am on 2 pumps of oestrogel a day now but am still experiencing many heart palps etc.
The weirdest symptom that comes and goes but is with me at the moment is a snapping sensation in my head upon falling asleep which freaks me out completely even though my doc sent me to a neurologist and he just looked blank but felt it was physicological and nothing worrying (suppose that was a little reassuring). I have also had electric shock feeling in my tongue at times and that slight buzzing sensation in my body and also vague migrainy feelings and head rushes (like I have had an emotional shock) which feel like warmth through my head.
Please has anyone else expereinced snapping sensation in their head - I have not come across anyone with quite this sensation so am really looking for reassurance that it can happen with hormones (although I hate anyone else to have this because its so scarey).
Thanks so much
Popsy (England)
SUNNY:- I have also experienced flashes of light and body jerks at this time of falling asleep too and also the noises can change from loud to soft and from snapping to shotgun type. I hope you find this information useful. I am so releived to talk to others going through similar things (not so crazy after all).

Hi Poppy & Sunny,
Poppy I am having the exact same problems. Just has falling to sleep having shock or slight snap which wakes me up. Sometimes with a jerk sometimes without but definitely a snapping sensation which I can definitely hear. If either of you come up with what might be causing it I would love to know. It definitely makes you feel like you are losing your mind when you feel it but so dis-heartening when you are trying to get some sleep!! Doesn't happen all the time either. Seems to follow whatever my menstraul cycle is... will have for 3 nights then not have for 3 nights. Then it will come back for 3 nights before my period. It's crazy...
Please let me know if either of you ever find out why something like that might be happening~
Thanks so much!! and glad to hear others out there with same symptoms~

When my twins were babies and i was very sleep deprived (didn't get a whole night's sleep for a year!) I went through a terrible period when as I fell asleep (or half an hour into sleep) and I would be snapped back awake with horrible head static and a feeling of dread. For a while I got it all the time and then later I noticed that it would come back the night before I got my period.
I actually had a sleep study ekg thing to try and diagnose it and they didn't see anything, but I didn't really have it at the time.
At the time I tried in vain to find a similar thing online, I was desperate to cure it as it made my already sleep deprived life hell. My brother and sister both said they got similar things.
Imagine my surprise now to find so many of you here with the same thing.
I am in perimenopause and had my worst month this month with night hot flashes and palpitations. And the cycle has dragged on and on (37 days). Well the night before last I woke up soon after I fell asleep, feeling terrible, like I was on speed. Controlled breathing would slow it down but it came back in waves. Sort of a rushy feeling but my heart wasn't particularly fast. It took me back to those terrible nights. Eventually I had a Xanax and mercifully slept.
The next day, you guessed it, I got my period.
So it has to be hormonal.
Its funny, it was a bit similar to the hot flash/palpitation thing. I bet they're related too.
Hope this helps :-)

These posts described me to a tee. This has been getting the best of me, Ihad it two years ago during the day and now at night sometimes. It's driving e crazy. Had a brain mri two years ago and all was fine. I guess it's hormonal.. I need to keep that in mind. Benadryl helps a lillte at night, but during the day it makes me tired.
I hope you are all feeling better.

....
So it has to be hormonal.
I get the EXACT same thing (I think). (see my post from yesterday) Feels almost like an electric charge or zap or something.
It's horrible.
Hardly slept at all last night and now my plans for the weekend feel dashed.
Does anyone know of a good supplement to help this? (I too have been to the dr. only to be told my heart appears normal, etc. but still I feel miserable and like I'm going to die when I go to bed. Sleep used to be so welcome and enjoyable. Now nothing is.)

The only supplement that comes to mind is Magnesium, since it helps promote healthy muscle and nerve function. Maybe someone else has another suggestion.
Hi All
I am getting all of the symptoms you get as I take magnesium with calcium chelate from Holland & Barratts (UK). I also take lemon balm capsules for my anxiety as its gets worse when these thing happen. I also get them a lot when I am tired or on the computer a lot.
I hope this helps.
Hang on in there girls.
