Hi Ladies!
Doctor recently doubled my dosage of benicar for my blood pressure from 20 mg/day to 40 mg/day. Seems like I've noticed more coughing, maybe swelling in my ankles, and have been more nervous since then. Has anyone had any problems with this or is this just something I'm imagining? I'm on HRT, lexapro, ativan, and ambien cr to sleep!! The nerves have been the worst part of all this for the last several years!! So I sure don't want to do something that makes them worse!! Anybody else have any experience with this med and changes when increasing dosages? Thanks!

I looked up side effects of benicar and found it can cause bronchitis,sinusitis,and edema(swelling).I think you should call your dr and request going to a lower dose or different medication.GOD-bless
My DH took benicar and had a dry hack and stuffy nose.....it also caused some insomnia....so that is probably the cause. Call your Doc!
My hubby took Benicar with the diuretic included in the medication. Initially he did not have any side effects, then he started having some issues with gout. Gout runs in his family so we didn't think much about this until he started have several reoccurances. That's when we researched the medication and saw that gout is listed as a side effect for the Benicar with the added diuretic. The doctor switched him to another medication and he is now doing wonderful with no more gout issues (He also changed his diet).

I started Benicar about 3 years ago and went from Benicar HCT 20mg/12.5mg to 40mg/12.5mg to 40mg/25mg over the course of 6 months with no side effects...except that it relieved my migraine auras! I have since switched to Benicar 40mg & Lasix 40mg because the HCT was not strong enough to reduce fluid retention once I started using progesterone.
However, every person is different and what works well for one can have many side effects for another. There are so many choices in types of antihypertensives, different modes of action and different side effects. It may take some trial & error but there should be something out there that can control your blood pressure without causing additional, unwanted effects. Good luck!
