Hi!
I've written about my experiences with Internal Shaking and I wanted to share something with all of you. I'd gone from doctor to doctor to doctor leaving with shrugged shoulders, iron deficiency anemias, sciatica, endured EMGs of my arms and legs, Somatosensory Evoked Potentials to rule out demyelinating diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis, and experienced an episode of tachycardia that the EMT's called in front of my bosses a "panic attack." After my friend had a heart attack at 2:30 AM and I accompanied him to the hospital, I began thinking that maybe it was time to go for a checkup. Good thing I did!
My blood pressure was extremely high and rather than treat me immediately with medication (he didn't know if I had white coat hypertension), he put me on a caffeine-free, chocolate, alcohol and licorice-free diet for 3 weeks and told me to take 2 tablets of Slow-Mag (Magnesium). At the end of three weeks he was going to reassess and take an echo.
My best friend had gone to this doctor a couple of days earlier and suggested I see him. He put her on Slow-Mag, too. I didn't know that until we were having coffee last night and I mentioned that since I'd been taking the Slow-Mag, I feel calmer and more at ease and the internal shaking, the constant vibration in my left leg, arm and lip, were almost non-existent. She said she'd felt calmer, too.
So, last night, I went online and researched magnesium deficiencies and came across a list of symptoms that fit me to a tee! After all the running and lack of explanations, I'd come across a doctor who was completely honest with me. He said that doctors don't know everything and patients find it hard to hear because we look to them for answers when there may be no medical explanation. My sister is a doc and she said the same thing to me.
Well, he told me about a female patient who is experiencing menopause symptoms who "yells" at them (lovingly, he said) because she doesn't understand why they (men) don't understand how and what we feel.
He put me on magnesium supplements for my heart and high blood pressure and when I looked up the symptoms of magnesium deficiency it said "tremors" and some menopausal symptoms, PMS-like symptoms, disturbance of vibratory sense, carpal tunnel syndrome, high blood pressure, tachycardias and the problem I'd been complaining about with lights and my vision at night.
At last! At last! My shaking is almost gone. I wanted to share this with you.

Bebe,
You mentioned that you had taken slo-mag and it helped. You also mentioned your doc put you on a magnesium supplement and it has really helped you. My problem is that I have many of the symptoms of magnesium deficiency which include awful internal shaking, muscle cramps and dizziness A LOT. I've tried magnesium supplements and they seem to have a laxative effect. I have no tried the slo-mag brand however. Anyone else have this problem with Mag. supplements?

If I take more than a few hundred milligrams of magnesium, it has a laxative effect. I guess it's different for everyone. I'd like to know how many milligrams are in Slow-Mag, and where I could get it. What company manufactures it?

Hi!
Slow Mag doesn't bother me at all. It's a 64 mg enteric coated tablet and I take it twice a day. I have GERD so I take Prilosec and Axid and perhaps that's why it hasn't bothered me. To tell you the truth, I'd rather live with mild diarrhea than with the vibrating.
I did research on it and found mostly positive stuff. I feel calmer, too, because it has a soothing effect on the central nervous system. For me, the benefits outweigh the deficits. I still have the vibrating at times but very slightly and sometimes I don't even feel it at all.
Good luck and please let me know how it turns out for you.

"At last! At last! My shaking is almost gone. I wanted to share this with you."I've been talking about magnesium for the internal shaking associated with menopause for nine years. I often use the expression, "when it spasms, give it magnesium." If you check the recommendations page, you'll see I recommend 500-1000 mg. magnesium for palpitations, anxiety, shaky feelings and migraines among other things.
Glad you found out and it's helping.

Has anybody had any side effects like headache / neck stiffness-pain / shoulder stiffnes-pain from taking magnesium? I bought some a few days ago and of course found out that diarrhea is a side effect.... but was wondering about the other. I also started pantothenic acid, could it be from that? --i know it is stupid to start more than one thing at a time for this very reason--but oh well.

Hi Ladies,
I'm excited for those who are having results with magnesium!
One thing I do want to mention is that "tremors," according to the medical literature I've read are visible to the eye. Also, they do not happen during sleep; whereas, my internal shaking happens only when I'm lying down to sleep, waking up or they will even arouse me from sleep.
Perhaps, we're talking about different conditions.
Could you read my first posting (agn10cal) and let me know if what I experience is really what you are experiencing?
I'm not so sure that my symptoms are due to menopause. I'm 43 years old and have had internal shaking for no less than 10 years. My 25 year old sister has had them and my 63 year old mother has them ( although I haven't talked to her about them for a couple years). To take the cake, my male doctor says that he has something like them too although he didn't have time to elaborate.
I'm confident that I'm writing to a sharp group of women. Can you report back to me about any atypical sufferers that you know? Let's figure this out.

Have you had your thyroid checked. Not just your TSH but a complete thyroid panel done including Free T3 and T4? Hypothyroidism and hyperthyriodism can cause tremors and twitches.

Agn10cal, I find this all extremely interesting. If you have read any of my posts, you will find our symptoms identical. We could be talking about the same body. I never experienced them before I went into menopause, and two doctors (gynecologists) have told me they could be vasomotor related, so that's what I expected they are from.
My internal shaking has pretty much stopped, thank God, since I've been on Inderal. I did add some magnesium to my supplements, but didn't really see a difference. Maybe I just didn't take enough of it. I will give it a try and see if I can wean from the Inderal. I hate taking drugs. Thanks for the post!

Hi! I have also had a terrible time with tremors and feeling like my hand was in a light socket for about 6 months. It was constant, hardly a day passed that it wasn't there, someday I thought I would crawl out of my skin. Tried acupuncture, my md ran a zillion blood tests, everything normal. I haven't officially hit memopause yet but am definitely peri-menopause.
Anyway, I read a lot on the subject. Upped my magnesium also and tried something called estrotone made by new chapter (found it as a health food store).
I don't know if it is the combination of things, or one of them specifically but I am SO much better!!!!!! I will continue to take them both cause I am afraid to stop.
The estrotone is an herb product, very natural. If it worked for me, it might help you. Good luck.

Hi, I found this thread particulary interesting, I am in surgical menopause, and have the internal tremor thing, also some of the other symptoms of mag. def. and had bought some mag, from puritan pride. It seemed to make me irrarable and has done this in the past when I tried it for pms symptoms. I am wondering if I should try the slow-mag that you'll have talked about or could it be that me need progestrone, in my HRT, that caused the problems? KIM

Thank you all for all your information here. I thought I was losing my mind. I have been in menopause for over a year and last year was the hot flashes and this year I got my period back and when I did, I got the internal shaking with it. It has only been one month, but I went right to the GP who wanted to put me on Paxil. These doctors are clueless....I had all my bloodwork done and nothing wrong....yeah right....I then went to a Nutrionist who does contact reflex analysis and she put me on a correct diet and vitamins, olive leaf extract, selinium, and folic acit. She found I have candida, which causes the hormonal imbalance also....along with this some hypoglycemia...so I was feeling better with the new diet, but I got my period again and bamm the internal buzzing full blown!!! I told her about the magnisium and that I was getting shaking worse during my periods....and she agreed magnisium, perhaps some zinc, and b-6.....so I am going back to her next week anyway for follow-up and will get more vitamins then.
I am 44 and had breast cancer 5 years ago...chemo, radiation etc...put me into menopause....my body must have been a mess for this to happen, I was not eating right and boy am I suffering now. To all of you suffering from the internal shaking, I can empathize with you ....it is worse at night and when I roll over in bed it stops for a moment and starts the roller coaster all over again....I am just grateful to God that I found you all. I was so scared and thought I would lose my mind, but now I feel empowered by all you and I know my LOrd JESUS will protect me and guide me now that I know what it is, I can fix it!!!!! I am embracing it as I did the hot flashes last year....embrace it, take authority over it and own your body!!!!! lets hope I can keep up this attitude....as last night I thought I would lose my mind...until I found all you. Thank you Dearest for all your hard work on this site and all you do and know. God bless you all, love treeoflife :-)

Hi everyone

This is a wonderful site,,,although I don't post very often, I read all the time. I have a question about the "internal tremors" everyone is referring to. Can someone give me a physical explanation of what they feel like?? I am almost 49, still get periods (although the cycles are starting to go off a little bit now). I do get hot flashes these days. At night when I am trying to drift off to sleep, I sometimes get this feeling of "tremors" throughout my body whick keeps me awake (kind of feels like a pulsating feeling,,,,,a pulsating in the back of my head and in various parts of my back. I then get a sensation of what feels like "restless legs". I had a mild heart attack a little over a year ago, and was on statin drugs ,,, I thought it might be a side effect of them (I stopped taking them to see (with doc's approval) for a month. However, I still have these "tremors", so I don't think it is the statins. Starting to think it might be a perimenopausal symptom. Any advice or thoughts would be greatle appreciated as I try to figure this out

Thanks!
Meryl
Apr 3 2005, 04:32 PM
Retti, I get both the pulsating and the internal shaking. They are entirely different feelings. The pulsating is more like a heartbeat, and the internal shaking feels like a misplaced vibrator! It's really weird and can be frightening if you don't understand what it is, but it really is a menopausal symptom and I just ignore it now. You can get it in a small spot, even as small as a dime, or can feel it all over. There's no rhyme or reason to it! Hope this helps!

I get it all over never had it in just one spot. My whole body feels shaky that's the only way I can describe it. I seem to be very anxious when it happens and it lasts all day when I get that way. Those are bad days. Hope this helps.

I'm like Meryl. I get the pulsating heart beat kind as well as the internal shaking that feels like an engine is running or vibrating. When this first happened to me about 6 months ago, I was totally freaked out and so my anxiety took off. After I had tests up the wahzoo that all came back saying I was fine I was not satisfied with that diagnosis. Thats when I found PS and read all the posts from other women who have had the same thing. Dearest also lists it as a symptom of meno. Now since I know what it is I just deal with in when it hits. Some months are worse than others.

I was wondering if any of you only get these sensations when you lie down to go to sleep? So far it is happening when I lie down to sleep, although I have general anxiety sometimes in the daytime.

Apr 4 2005, 07:47 AM
Yes, Retti. It usually happens around sleep -- either before, during, or upon awakening. That is when it is the most common! Weird, huh? The doctor explained it to me this way: your cells are used to being bathed in estrogen. As you produce less, your body releases -- I think it's FSH, asking your ovaries to release the estrogen. When there is none to supply, it releases more FSH, and then you get the vibrations. Hope I got that right. It's been a while since I thought about this and my mind certainly isn't what it used to be!!!

You actually had a doctor explain why we get this internal shaking? That is interesting. So is it a symptom of estrogen deficiency?

Would the magnesium you get in a calcium/magnesium/zinc vitamin pill be enough to help with these symptoms, or do you need a whole separate magnesium supplement?

HI everyone!
I have been taking mag/cal for about 2 months now and it seemed like for a few weeks the shaking was gone. Then came the period and wham, it was back again. Now it is everyday at 5am I get woken up from the internal shaking and it won't stop until I get up out of bed and start moving.
I am still taking the mag/cal daily and right before bed. (I take 1,000 mg of mag a day)
Any suggestions????
Thanks

Hi my sisters,
Yes, I've had the tremors and shaking too. Alot in the past year. Magnesium
does help quite a bit but it gives me terrible diarrhea. The slo-mag is better but
you have to take so much to get a working dose.
Any tips on dosage and types of magesium? Which kind is more absorbable and
less likely to cause bathroom problems?

Hi all
I am new to the message boards, and I discovered them because I typed internal shaking into the google search and you came up!
I live with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, many many chemical and food sensitivities, and autoimmune thyroid disease. Now I have gone without a period for over 4 years and as time passes the internal shaking has gotten worse and worse until it is always there, never goes away and is just in various forms. I take Cal/Mag but not every day. I have been thinking it was due to adrenal exhaustion from CFS, but since is has gotten worse in past 4 years I am thinking menopause. I went to a doctor 2 weeks ago for allergy testing and he told me he thought all my illnesses were much worse now because of menopause. I am mostly housbound and horizontal 70% of the time. I can handle most all that has happened in the past 14 years, but this internal shaking is the worst for me!
What do you take to help this besides Mag. Someone mentioned estrogen but I have a grandmother, mother and two sisters who have had cancer= breast and uterus.
This board and this site are going to help me keep my sanity! I cannot believe what a relief it is to find it.

Welcome to Power Surge Grandma Na! You are going to love this site!! It has helped me confirm that no matter what, I am NOT losing my mind.

I have dealt with all kinds of shaking for years now. I use to have an internal motor that ran all the time. <_< Now I have external shakes. Some days are worse than others but for me, just knowing it's part of menopause makes it tolerable. All I take are vitamins. Probably does nothing for the shakes!! Magnesium is supposed to help that. Hope you find some relief and again welcome to PS.

HI Grandma Na,
Welcome to the board. You have jsut foudn the best palce in the Internet! If it wasn't for Power SUrge I would be in a mental institution for sure! Anyway...I have the shaking (internal) all the time. Used to b e jsut in the AM not it is pretty much all day...Been to 14 dr's not about it...they all just stare. No one knows or can explain it. How long to Dr's go to school???? LOL
Anyway, I do take the mag/cal...I don't really think it helps because it doesnt' go away and I have tried not taking it and it doesn't get worse. I've had to quit my job over t his so yes, it is totlally effecting me.
I can tell you this much.. Iave narrowed it down to it doesn't happen when I am up walking around...It's from when I am sitting , sleeping and laying too long. So now I have gotten used to as soon as it starts, I get up and move. I believe it is adrenaline that needs to be burned up.
Try it for a week. Everytime it starts....get up and walk, ride your bike, tread mill, anything you can do to burn it up. See if you think it is adrenaline. Let me know.
Have a non shaking day!

Hi Grandma Na,
Welcome to the board. I discussion forum has helped me so much, and I know it will help you too.
We seem to be twins in our conditions and symptoms. From the Fibro to the thyroid ( I have hashimoto's) and right down to the shaking.
My shaking was really severe, and kept me awake, and worried. Mine is SO much better, if not gone most of time. I started taking CHELATED Calcium, Magnesium, Zinc all in one tablet at night before going to bed. I has a seditive affect on me, a nice calming feeling. After just a couple of weeks on this tablet, the shakes were dramatically reduced. When I start skipping my evening routine, back they come!
After all the stressing I did, thinking it was some awful disease, I was so relieved to find it was a defiency.
Keep in touch. I hope to hear you are doing so much better soon.
Best wishes,
Sidd

Started in the foot only which I must saty where it mostly is only the left side thou so strange...Now when I am stressed especially my husband has been diagnosed with rectal cancer I am really shaking up a storm when i lay down to sleep or first wake up it feels that my left side of neck head and shoulder down to elbow humand vibrate then clears up a bit and only stays in left foot. Some days very soft other days out of control like I am leaning on a running car.. Anyone else have this? I have been to all kinds of docs had all the eno test all normal they say. Take mag take vitamin D by the way I read on here and the D seemed to help. Thanks for listening I am 52 years young ha. Love Ellice

Hi Gemlee53, You may find that because of your husbands health you will vibrate more. I found anxiety made it worse. I know it's hard but try to ignore the hum and continue with your everyday things. Maybe concentrate on your husband and the tremors may lessen. I've had mine for a year, severe at first, then they all but disappeared last month but now they are back but not so bad. I get them in my feet, left arm, left of my back, and my legs. I know you've had them for 2 years, but I think we have to learn to live with them. Do some relaxation and meditation to calm the nerves down. That's why I think they flare up because it's the nervous system, when stressed the nerves tremor. That's my conclusion anyway. Have a look at the study groups postings and if you like fill out the questionaire. We are trying to find a link but it seems not many are interested in the subject. But that's ok. Hope some of this is a bit of help to you and I wish your hubby well. Cheers Cheryl

Hi Cheryl.
Thank you so much for your reply..
Yes I know when I am tired or stressed thaey seem to shake up a storm but it is so strange that it is only on my left side? My right side feels like it belongs to another person.. It started in the sole and heel of my foot lasted like that about 1 year not really bad..Then it started in my left arm and shoulder up the side of my neck and head weird.. when I go to sleep at night and laying still i start rocking and rolling ,then I awake in the morning and feel real shakey at first then it calms down a bit. No real pattern, sometimes faint other times real real strong. I take a valium or zanax when it is real bad to just calm down and I do deep breathing and pilates. Oh well have checked it out with all docs and no answers so I just live with it.

Thanks for your reply and listening too. Ellice gemlee53

Hi again Ellice, I love your name, my son has and Elise in his class is it said the same way? Since my tremors have come back I seem to have them a bit stronger when I go to bed. Within about 5mins of laying down my left arm starts, mainly the upper arm, often towards the back. At times my thighs will have a go as well!! The only time I seem to have them in the morning is when I sit down for my first cup of tea. Sometimes I think I'm so used to it I don't notice them. Today I did and thought " there here and forgot about them". They stop and start so often it's hard to keep up with it! I only really had them bad when they first started and they calmed down without taking anything, but it took a few months and panic attacks before I accepted them. I really really wish someone would have an answer for this, or some Doctor would study it and tell us WHY! Anway keep in touch if you like and we can get through this together

Cheers Cheryl

Hello Everyone!!
I have been on these boards in the past and haven't been on in a while due to my husband getting cancer. I have a question for anyone who can help. I have had these internal tremors for about 21/2 years and have gone the Doctor route ,accupuncture, chiropractor, physic healer etc, along with batteries of test. Does ANYONE out there have these symptons. ONLY left side of the body...
Left foot feels like there is constantly a m otor running inside sometimes it reves up faster and i can feel it up to knee like it is humming ,buzzing vibrating ,bubbling boiling, etc. and the other thing is the left shouloder to the back of the left side of head feels like it too is shaking, quivering ,vibrating. only internally not visible to anyone....
This happens usually when I lay down at night and wake up in the morning. It feels like you are about to have a seizure at times. then other times all is quiet. The neck and shoulder thing only happens when laying down ,the foot always!!!!! Help it is driving me nuts...Any suggestions or comments gladly welcomed!! Love to all Ellice

Hi Gemlee53, I'm really sorry to hear about your husband, how is he going?
You sound exactly like me!! The worst effected side is my left, at the moment my left foot(sole) and the calf muscle are vibrating. When I go to bed at night I can feel the back of my left arm, the left side of my back up my neck as well. Sometimes I have this even when I'm standing, not as often as sitting or going to bed. Not in the morning thank god! I was too scared to move out of bed at one stage because as soon as I did they would start. Have you read all the info on this site? I spoke to dearest the other night and she has suggested that I take magnesium only when the tremors occur. I was taking them 500mg twice a day, instead if needed take one and then alittle while later take the other which I have done tonight. It's taking the 1000mg as nearly a whole and hopefully it will be more effective than taking it twice daily. I also find the tremors are worse at night than during the day, also if you still have your periods Gem they will be worse around this time and when you ovulate. This must be the most bizzare of the peri symtoms and the scariest at first until you accept them. But the length of time you've had them is awful, I feel for you. Have you still got your periods? Keep reading and trying different things, which youv'e probably already done!! Cheers for now Cheryl

Thanks for the response this is all so strange and I just cannot figure out why there are days that are better then others. I have not had a period in 5 years so I am in menopause for a while now. The symptons started two - three years after my periods stopped. I am so flipped out when I have them really bad internally shaking. I will try the magnisum in one full dose rather then seperate. Do you know the best one to use? Like I said I have been to all docs and tried everything. I thought I had MS or parkinsons or something dreaded but otherwise I really feel ok. I know stress makes it worse for sure. I am 53 years old and this is so scarey. Like I said my body feels like it is split down the middle. Left side vibrating and right side fine... Hi Ellice, with the magnesium it's 500mg per tablet, so you take 1000mg per day. I'm in Australia so I may have different products to you. Go to a health food shop or chemist and ask for a good brand. I always look and see if the brand they recomend is in the supermarket at a cheaper price. I have been taking the 1st tablet when the tremors become worse, around early evening, and then and hour later take the 2nd. It doesn't say in the recomendation site how long to leave it between tablets, you will be able to ask that when you go to buy them anyway. Let me know if you find out! I have heard some women getting the tremors after meno, I'm in peri so I'm hoping they disappear when this is over. Dearest also recomended me to contact their doctor on this site as he maybe able to make up a cream for this symptom. I have to find the paper I wrote it on and let you know his name. Then you can e-mail him if the magnesium doesn't work. Another lady JennyJ will be on here in a couple of weeks and she will let us now how she's going with the herbal medicines she is taking. Don't stress over this (easy to say) as I think that can make them worse. I have accepted them as a part of peri, but sometimes I still worry when they are strong. If you would like you can pm me and we can talk. Cheers Cheryl

Hi Gemlee53,
I hope yhis puts your mind at ease,
Ive had the internal buzzing for 2 yrs now....first it started on both legs....very intence...and as time went on it was just concentrated on one tiny part of my left ankle...and in the arch of my left foot....So strange I know.....It was probably the size of a quarter.
This comes and goes.Right now it has calmed down significantly.I too was so freaked out thinking ...Why is it only on the left side?? then of coarse your mind wonders and you think for sure something must be terribly wrong....Its Not...I promise you...This is very normal..even though it doesn't feel normal !
If You go to the forum Internal shaking (i believe) and click on that...it should bring you back to all of the posts concerning "internal tremors"/Buzzing...You can read all the way back to 2001..I believe.
As you read you will see this is prevalent among both Peri and meno women.
feel better Ellice...By the way...My middle name is Elise

Spelled differently. Your husband is in my prayers,
Hugs,
Lynda
