I read that interval training is good too. Walk at a regular pace for 3 minutes, faster for three, regular for three, really pumping for three and back to regular for three. Do this for 30-40 minutes. I am trying it. I was running but with osteoarthritis I couldn't even go up and down stairs without holding on to a railing. I stopped it all for a few weeks and the pounds are creeping back. I started back today and walked and ran a little in between. It just gets the blood pumping, walking frustrates me, but is so much better on the body. I just want my 20 year old metabolism back. One week of exercise and watching what i ate and 5 pounds would roll off, now it took months to move any pounds. I dont' ever get on a scale, it's depressing, I just go by my clothes and how they fit, right now I am wearing lots of sweats, the clothes are getting tight, it is so frustrating.

I love speed walking, and want to use it to lose weight, but how long should you walk daily?I have read 35 min,but I can go for up to an hour. Also should I walk every day or have a few days off?

You can and should walk every day. But if you do interval walking, as enough has described in her post, you will get much more of an aerobic cardio workout, and that's great. Twenty minutes of high intensity interval cardio is better than one hour of "speed walking" or jogging. Doing high intensity intervals every day causes your body to keep burning a more calories for several hours afterward, too.

So continue to do this every day if you wish, no need to take days off.

However, if you weight train, you should rest 48 hours after exercising a specific muscle group.

For example, beginners usually start off doing full body weight training three times a week. They follow a routine that works all muscle groups, with on or two days off between sessions. More advanced lifters, like CarolH, do split routines. They exercise the muscle groups in the upper body one day. The next day they do their lower body. Then it's one day off, and repeat the cycle. Some powerlifters and bodybuilders will workout every day, upper body, followed by lower body, the upper again with maybe one day a week off. All weight training works with doing your cardio EVERY DAY!

Weight training is much more taxing on your body, but if you really want to change your body, do cardio every day, lift weights every other day.

Thanks so much for this!!I have been doing intervals while walking,I have even jogged a bit! I noticed a pair of pants were just a tiny bit looser today,I have been doing the walking for a while now,so it is good to see a bit of a result.

Help me ladies! My mother-n-law is back....Just put the fresh sheets back on the bed this am before I left for work and she met me at the door when I pulled up... Sheesh! there is an evil witch that lives inside of me and she is screaming to get out. .. Not sure how I'm going to tackle her and this commitment to dieting but for starters I'm going to re-read what Armadillo said late last week... Suffice it to say that today's journal has been shot. I'm off to hide in my bedroom.

Hey everyone!

Carol, thanks for the explanation about the kettle balls!! Sounds like you are continuing to do well! Way to go.

Lady E, it is always so great to see some actual tangible results, so congrats to you!!

Arm, our bestest cheerleader!! Thank you so much for your continued good natured support.

I hope everyone else is doing well.

I walked again today. There is this fairly big hill I have to walk up during my walk and I dread it. I end up huffing and puffing before I reach the top. Well yesterday and today I made it all the way to the top without stopping, or even slowing down much. I was still huffing and puffing by the time I reached the summit, but it felt a lot easier!! I consider that progress!

I have choked down 4 glasses of water so far. Four more to go! Ugh!!

Even though I had to work this morning, I packed myself some food...yogurt, an apple, some All Bran Bites and a few almonds. I thought that was great for me. Normally I would not have eaten anything. I am planning to make a veggie omlette with Egg Beaters for dinner.

Hi Ladies,

It's good to hear that everyone is doing well. I'm hanging in there.. I'm working out each morning, water is good and food quality is decent however.. I don't have time to journal or post on here.. Hopefully by this weekend I'll have more time.

This morning's workout was a 2 mile run then 20 minutes playing with my kettlebells. :-)

Lady E, I wear gray tops to work out in because it shows sweat better. :-) Is that not vain or what?

Have a great day everyone,

Hi Ladies,

Lady E, that's wonderful! I was talking to my brother this past weekend and he says he can't lose unless he works out twice a day. I'm not sure I could ever talk myself into that though. I work out in the morning before I have time to think otherwise I might not work out at all.

As for workouts though.. I haven't worked out since Thursday. I came down with a bad cold Thursday afternoon and am just now getting over it. I do hope to workout tomorrow morning though. Something light, maybe just the treadmill. I've also not been journalling and.. been treating my sore throat with many a milk shake.. :-) I don't know.. it seems like all the stars have to be alligned just perfectly for me to stick to this... maybe I don't want it bad enough? Not that I'm giving up though.. I will trudge on... :-)

One thing I've noticed though is .. sugar gives me hot flashes so I'm trying to get my mind to associate anything sweet with hot flashes and use that as an avoidance technique, similar to the way I associate wheat with feeling bad... See if that works..

I'm glad you guys are keeping the thread going, it's motivation to make tomorrow a better day.

Carol- sugar does the same with me. Alcohol does it too. I have to view it as the enemy LOL I love ice-cream, so on the first Sunday of the month I have hubby take me to Cold Stone's, and I splurge. But that's it. I find I count down on the calendar as the days get closer! LOL

Hey, it's good to hear from you. I thought maybe all of you had left. Leeanne, I found that with wine if I mix it with seltzer water or diet sprite then the hot flashes aren't near as bad.

So how has everyone been?

I was out of town for a week and did great with eating but had no exercise... lost 3 lbs. I was so excited and felt so good.. Came home, had my new kettlebells in the mail, started working out.. started eating... gained all 3 lbs back.. :-( Must be something about home...

Great minds think alike!! That's what I do too, but sometimes I just HAVE to have a good glass of cabernet!! LOL laugh.gif
