Hello all,

This is my first time to post.  I'm 52 and in the middle of menopause.  I have noticed the past 6-8 months that my calves twitch.  Just recently, it seems to be almost continuous and I've noticed twitching in other parts of my body.  This is really freaking me out!  Anyone else with this symptom?

Flossie
I get muscle twitches all over the place - it feels as if someone is poking me with their finger at times. It freaks me out too, but it's just a thing to live with, I guess....!
sarahmckasson
Thanks for the reply.  How long have you been getting the twitches?  Do you get them througout the day?  I've got an appointment to see the Dr.  - not looking forward to that.
debrikkia
Ladies,

You're not alone--I have the annoying twitches also, in fact my right calf has been twitching since I woke up this morning!  I don't know what it is, but I've increased the minerals that I take to see if it helps.  I'll let you know.

Went to see the Dr. about the twitches - scheduled for a MRI and EMG next week.  I'm scared to death they will find something horribly wrong.  I've had these twitches for 6 months, so guess I would have some other symptoms by now if it was a terrible neuro disease, but I'm very nervous.  Any words of encouragement would be very appreciated.

Dear S:How did the MRI turn out?  I also have the twitches and this internal shaking and quivering constantly.  Mine has been going on for a year now.  I have been diagnosed with lupus and will go to a rheumatologist on the 17th.  I was never ill until I started going through menopause.  I hope everything is ok with you.  Please let us know what your doctor said about the MRI.  I am interested and hopeful for you.Ga Girl

Sarah, Don't worry about the MRI.  I had the leg twitches a couple of years ago.  They were so bad that I couldn't sleep at night.  Sometimes this would go on for a couple of weeks at a time.  I have heard of many women who have them in midlife.  I have tried several things.  Someone suggested that it might be from a lack of fluids, so I tried drinking more water.  Massaging your legs might help.  Sometimes when I get milder twitching, I find that I have to go to the bathroom and I don't know if going helps stop it or if just walking a bit made it stop.  I also have tried sleeping on my side or my stomach where all of my weight is on the leg that twitches and sometimes that stops it.  Could try aspirins or tylenol.  I don't have it now.  I guess that this symptom has run its course?    At least the couple of times that it has happened in the last 2 years it has not been very bad.  I also get twitching above my left eye.

Your doctor probably prescribed the MRI because most doctors have no clue about all of these meno symptoms.  Unfortunately, even though meno has been around since women have been on earth, doctors are just learning about it and researching it now.

Greetings Sarah........I too have leg twitches and have had them on and off for about 5 years.  My doctor said it is Restless Leg Syndrome and more of a nuisance than anything else.  When I get them I take a leisurely bath which helps to relax them and then massage them gently (if I'm lucky my 12 year old daughter massages them for me LOL).  I think they may be hereditary as my father was plagued with this issue for many years, I know because my mom complained that he kept her awake with his legs constantly moving.smile.gif  I notice that if I get overtired the twitches are worse.

Blessings and be well.

Pat01
I noticed today a strange feeling almost like a quiver, or remember way back when we were pregnant and the baby kicked, that's what I feel on my left abdomen.  There is no pain,  I thought it was gas.  My left eye twitches also at times.  I thought being a teenager was tough!

Sarah.... I have also had the Restless Leg Syndrome thing for about 15 years now, and mine also worsens when I get overly tired, the same as Irene describes hers as doing.  No one in my family seems to understand what I am talking about when I describe it, though... they just give me very weird looks.  :)

Thanks to you all for the kinds words.  The MRI and EMG were both normal, thank goodness!  Still have the twitching, mostly in my calves but also sometimes in other parts of my body.  Also having a sort of electric buzzing/vibration sensation in my food and legs.  Could this be internal shaking?  Since I'm still twitching, my internist wants me to see the nuero - have an appointment for October.Went to dinner with a friend and discussed Meno.  She told me she had calf twitches for two years!!  Finally went away.  So good to know that I'm not the only one with this crazy symptom.  Thanks to all of you for sharing your experiences.

Sarah

That's great news Sarah!  We will all get through this together.  It is wonderful to have someone to share all of our worries.Ga Girl

Help!!!  My eyelids have been twitching now for more than a month and it's driving me nuts!  Has anyone else experienced this or is this even remotely symptomatic of menopause.

I was extremely interested to read about your calves twitching sarahmckasson.  I have this problem and it has developed over the past month and is driving me crazy with worry.   Could you please tell me more about your experience with this problem?
jbucceri
About the eye twitching. I've have it with my right eye lid. It's been doing it for 9 months. Also get it on other part of my body. It will usually do it in the same place for months then stop for awhile. I 've had other strange symptoms such a internal shaking, buzzing and tingling in my legs and feet. These symptoms come and go. I've seen numerous neurologists over the last 2 years. I've had 6 MRI's, 3 EMG's, blood tests etc. -- nothing shows up. I find that magnesium helps the twitching. I still get it every day but not constantly like before. I'm tired of seeing doctors and they admit they can't figure it out. Now I don't let it bother me as much as before. If anyone has any thoughts, please let me know. I'm interested in where to get the slow mag?? Pinky
theode2
Hi Jane, I've seen Slow Mag at regular pharamacies.....CVS, and other chains. I think Walmart may also carry it. Hope this helps to answer the specific question that you posed about where to buy the Slo Mag you were interested in pursuing. Tedi

OMG! I was so thankful to see this as a topic. I have been so worried that I have MS or some other terrible disease! I am scheduled for an MRI on Dec. 30 to rule it out. How scarey! But it sounds like all of you have learned to live with this and maybe it is just another sign of menopause. WHAT isn't??? Do any of you take hormones to relieve this? I'm wondering if it's related to anxiety as well. I also have the internal shaking, terrible muscle aches, etc. and it's driving me crazy!

If you go to Power Surge's Recommendations page, you'll find magnesium, how much to use, info about it, plus links to where to purchase it. I've also been using some excellent new products from Natures Benefit. It's included on the Recommendations page (direct links to commercial sites aren't permitted on the boards). I haven't added the products I've started using, such as Green Tea Max, Syndrome X (powder) and others. You'll find more information on the link above as well as by reading the transcript about Combat Syndrome X by Stephen Holt, M.D. - an internist, gastroenterologist, board certified in the U.S., the U.K. and Canada - and also a brilliant nutritionist. His second transcript can be found here - about 'The Menoplan. There's additional information about MenoPlan here. Dearest

I am so glad to find this board. I too have been having this twitching. It's almost a popping feeling in my legs. My right thumb and forefinger twitch too. The place that really is bugging me is in my tongue. (Please someone tell me that they do this too) Of course, the internet can be your best friend or worst enemy. I have read that this is also a symptom of ALS! I have been having irregular periods now for about a year. Last one was three months from the one before. Now I am late again. Hot flashes, migraines..all the classic symptoms. I am 43 which my Dr. thinks is too young.

I just read about the tongue twitching......for the past week or so,when i am trying to get to sleep,my tongue starts doing a little tickling/twitching,and it feels so strange.....anyone else have this happen?
Christina55
Anyone have head twitching? It's very weird. It's like tremors that start in my neck and go up, and it's getting worse - probably cuz I'm so TENSE!
AnxietyAttack
HI Christina55 Yes, it feels in a way like that part of your head is numb. Or millions of tiny little insects are doing a dance inside your scalp. LOL!! Seems to be a very common symptom. Peace AA
Christina55
Hi Anxiety! No, it's not like itching or crawling......it's an actual tremor. My girlfriend noticed it first about 2 months ago. I've always had very tense neck muscles and sometimes my head will twitch to one side if I have to hold my head still like at the dentist or hair dressers - I probably tense up or something. Then right at the same time I started this stuff about 3 months ago it turned into a consistent, slight tremor. Could it be hormone related? It's a little scarey.
joliejacq
Hi Christina, I have this too - it's such a pain at the hairdresser's, isn't it? Mine has gotten a little worse with perimenopause (I've had it for years), and I'm assuming that with many of the other symptoms, it will pass in time. Relaxation and deep breaths!
otter
Hey Christina - if it's hormonal I'd be surprised, since my dad has had the same thing for decades. His is benign positional tremor - never got worse - just happens when he holds his head a certain way. Maybe his estrogen was low. biggrin.gif Otter
Christina55
Otter - LOL - It's just really strange that this has happened just as I really went full swing into hormone hell. Maybe I just need a margarita  Jolie - I've had this for years as well...maybe since my teens. It was only bad if I was really stressed. Now it's consistent....perhaps cuz I'm stressed all the time? Jeesh!
joliejacq
Christina, Can't tell you how much I've hated this head-tremor thing. I almost never go to a hairdresser (hub cuts my hair now) - last time I went, the stylist got annoyed with me cuz' my head was bobbing around. Yuck! Also a real pain when I go for glasses and have to sit still while the doc gazes into my eyes with that light-thing. Also noticed it as a stress thing, when I was uncomfortable in places - eating at restaurants with certain "hoity-toity" people (hub's work clients, etc.), or whenever I felt someone was watching me too closely. It got better over time, but I do have it more in peri. Wee-ha, the joys of being neurotic! Hope it helps that you know now you're not alone with this! Jacquie
Christina55
Thanks Jacquie. It makes me so self conscious now. It's very slight, but accompanied with the little twitches (jerks) I'm sure EVERYONE notices. I've had a pretty rough last 3 years and this last year in particular. It's possible my adrenals are totally exhausted and I'm just a nut case. I have an appt. with my OB/GYN for next week. It's my first since all this started and boy is he gonna get an ear full! Look out.......here comes the crazy woman! LOL

I have been having twitching/tingling in my neck/shoulders off and on,anyone else have this,or is it something i should worry about?
Julester
I have the head twitching too. My Doctor said it was only nerves, but I'm not sure I believe her. It seems to be worse when I'm concentrating on something like a book, the tv or thinking hard about something. How can it be related to anxiety if I experience it most when I'm relaxed and reading? My worst experience with the head twitch was when I was having a section of skin cancer removed on my nose. The Surgeon was coming at me with a knife and I was terrified that I was going to twitch and lose my nose. Luckily I was able to keep it steady long enough to get the job done.
patty123
I have the head twitching too! It is worse when I'm nervous but I can control it if I have to. I was told that I have "benign fasciculation syndrome" which explains all of the muscle twitching including the head twitching. I try not to get anxious about it but it's hard sometimes. I also have tired muscles and I fatigue easily which the neurologist says is not typical of this syndrome so of course I worry that I have something more serious but he re-assured me that I don't since my neuro exam is completely normal.

Hang in there! You are not alone!

Hi, I am so scared I can hardly type. I have some twicthing in my legs, not all the time but mostly at night or when I sit down to relax (if there is such a thing). Just here and there. I notice everylittle change in my body and am sure it must be a precursor of some dread disease. I just sit and cry and can't get over the feeling that it is something serious. I am so terrified of als - a friends brother died of that and I can't get that out of my head. In fact I worry so much I feel like I am going to throw up. I am 55 and had a complete hysterectomy a few years ago. Any help = any one?
SandraSmith
Val, when you were in your 20's or 30's did you have this same feeling like anything you felt in your body was something serious ? Or is this a feeling that has come on more recently ? I ask because I think one of the symptoms of perimenopause and menopause is increased worry and anxiety. I too find myself worrying more.

Did you do any HRT after your hysterectomy ? I ask because I have had a very pronounced psychological benefit from supplementing hormones, both progesterone and estradiol. Estradiol has quite literally brightened my mood and I feel much more positive and optimistic. If you are not doing HRT you might want to consider it. I don't know that it will do anything for your twitching, but it might help decrease the level of worry.

I get worried too,but I read all the posts on this subject now feel better.I get twitches in my right calf [sometimes other places] it seems whenever I sit down and relax.I did read about "hypoparathyroidism" that could cause twitches. It said the treatment was calcium and Vit D.So I'm taking Cal/mag and D before bed which helps me sleep. It still comes and goes but I've been through a lot of symptoms that I've worried about and now it's something else.So I try not to over react. I am 42 going through peri. When I was 41 I began having thumping in my uterus. It felt exactly like a baby kicking in the womb. It was with great joy that I bought a pregnancy test, thinking that I had accidentally gotten pregnant and made it to the 4th month without any of the horrendous nausea I usually get. The pregnancy test was negative. I began to have muscle spasms randomly all over my body. Then the emotional symptoms started and problems with my balance. I thought I had MS. I've actually had occasional hot and cold flashes for a few years now. I am just now putting it all together and realizing that these muscle spasms or twitches are probably peri related. You are not too young because I am not too young and I have the blood work to prove it. Take care.

I've had the eyelid twitch before. I once heard it was due to being tired or stressed. Now I have a left breast twitch. It's driving me crazy. Why is this happening?

I also begin twitching 18 months ago (I had just turned 50) in my calves only and saw a neurologist a year ago January. Because there was no atrophy or weakness in my limbs and no vision issues, she called it benign. I have noticed much more twitching in all areas of my body-just last night my face was twitching and I started developing cramping in my feet and thighs. I haven't seen any new posts about this problem and was hoping that a lady who had been undergoing this issue previously and has come out of it unscathed would post. I am so afraid of MS, as the prognosis does not seem as bright once diagnosed past 50. Anybody out there to share their twitching story?

Dada, I have been twitching for 3 years. It also started when I think I hit the perimenopausal time. You just how learn to accept it emotionally, as time goes by and no weakness or atrophied muscles start, you start believing it is nothing fatal or deadly, just annoying.

Dear'val1234'
It seems like you are in the company of quite a lot of twitching Ladies of a certain age!.My calf muscles will do this when I try to relax but my biggest twitchy area is my eyelid. It is quite embarrasing sometimes as some of these greasy old men seem to think I am winking at them.As if I had the time, desire or energy.
Anyway have had all the usual Tests. All negative so the Doctor thinks this is all stress related.I think he is probably right.I take a small dose of Xanax if Anxiety levels run high. That seems to help.

I do hope you will feel better soon

Warm Wishes

Hello ladies..
Thought I would add my two cents here.. my life has changed so much since last June, first anxiety and panic attacks hit me hard.. I mean I have always suffered panic attack episodes but it was WAY worse last summer. Then I got a little twitch in my thigh.. sent me to the internet.. big mistake! I feared the worst right away, then I got the twitchys all over my body.. then IBS hit me, then my muscles ached, I got the electric shock sensations when trying to sleep, I couldnt eat, my head was all in a fog. I saw a neuro in Jan. who also said benign esp. if twithing all over and no other weakness associated. Soooo to ease all your minds, I guess it is hormones. I get the electric sensations in my hands and feet too.. and my feet always twitch, or my calves.. very common places I guess!

NOW my problem is headaches, I was in the ER last weekend and admitted because my right eye, the pupil is smaller and my eyelid droops....and my head was aching for 1.5 weeks!! Anyhow after MRI, 2 CT scans, mutiple blood work, X-rays they chalked it up to Horners syndrome! Great! And NO known cause for my case..
I am falling apart I tell you!!

Love and hugs..
~L
Sukie
I twitch, too. Much less when on Sertraline (which I'm soon going to be weaning off of thanks to hair loss) so I'm pretty anxious about the weaning process. I actually tried coming off of it a few weeks back and noticed that the twitches came back in full force. They're so uncomfortable. I get them really bad at night when I first start to fall asleep. I start to doze and then my whole body revolts in this full-body twitch.

(Men have it so good.)
