I've been using about 1/8 teas. 10% natural progesterone cream (from compounding pharmacy) for about a month and feel more depressed now than before. Is it possible that the progesterone cream could be making me MORE depressed??

I take Remifemin (black cohosh) also. I started the progesterone cream 2 weeks after the Remifemin. I have been on AD nortriptyline (10 mg) for 5 months now. It hasn't helped much but seems like the depression got worse after I started using the progesterone cream. Has anyone else become depressed after using progesterone creme??

Thanks

MaryO
Several of the topics here on the boards (Progesterone and Depression, Side Effects of Natural Progesterone? and Progesterone Cream - and probably others) discuss depression and progesterone.

Also, on the Power Surge Recommendations page, Dearest writes (among other things): "Natural progesterone is touted as a remedy for menopausal issues, such as hot flashes, insomnia, anxiety, vaginal dryness, bones, thinning hair, et al. Some women experience adverse side effects, such as depression, irritability and/or anxiety while using natural progesterone (in any modality), but as with everything else, playing with doses may erradicate those side effects. The transcript of Dr. John Lee, provides useful information about natural progesterone."

That transcript is available in the Power Surge Transcript Library.

You also may be interested in Power Surge Newsletter, Issue 13, since it was devoted entirely to progesterone cream.

Best of luck to you.

I use a compounded progesterone cream and my pharmacist says that the highest concentration they use is 6%. I have significant osteoporosis and use progesterone as a treatment (it's working) and use a 4% cream. Your strength may be way too high and you might want to use only a small amount for a few weeks to see if it helps the depression.

I just started using progesterone cream on June 1. I haven't had a period in a few months. I am using 1/4 teaspoon twice a day.

Yesterday, a headache and depression set in. Usually depression is not a serious problem I have had during perimenopause.

Now I think I need to decrease my dosage as the depression seems linked to the cream.

For me there is a linkage between progestrone
and depression. I personally feel this is the hormone
that causes, not cures PMS.

I've been on the Climara (estrogen only) patch for a few months for the menopausal symptoms and lately (on the advice of a friend) have started using progesterone cream to help my osteoporosis problem. I'm sleeping better but it does seem to affect my moods. Do you know if it's o.k. to combine the two? sad.gif
