Full Version: Stomach Acid?

Hi all!
I am pretty sure my hormones are all over the place since I stopped having hot flashes a week ago. I've been having so many symptoms including some pretty nasty burning in the pit of my stomach. I've always had a lot of stomach acid and currently take Prilosec and Tums, and try to watch what I eat. I'm very careful not to let it get out of hand as I had an ulcer several years ago and don't want to go down that road again! I'm just wondering if anyone else suffers from an acidic or burning tummy? If so, what do you take or do differently until it eases up?

Thanks!

protonix--it is a prescription med for acid reflux, but really is a help for all sorts of burning pain.I have an appoitment with the doctor who first prescribed the med,.When the generic form was given to me (insurance issues,of course) it has not worked as well for me.

I take Aciphex daily and have taken it for a few years now and it works for me. My stomach used to bother me on a daily basis but not now.

2sonsmom, Does Aciphex have to be prescribed by a dr? I am currently taking an otc acid reducer, but I still have stomach problems.

Hi TW, yes it is prescribed by my doctor.

CHALK ANOTHER ONE UP TO HORMONES. IVE BEEN HAVING A LOT OF GERD THE LAST FEW YEARS AND I RECENTLY HAD TO HAVE THE SCOPE DOWN MY THROAT TO MAKE SURE THERE WAS NO DAMAGE (THERE WASNT), BUT I WAS EXPLAINING TO MY DR THAT MY HORMONES ARE MESSED UP RIGHT NOW AND HE SAID THAT WOULD ALSO CAUSE THE GERD. HE SAYS THAT ESTROGEN IS A SMOOTH MUSCLE RELAXANT AND IT RELAXES THE OPENING BETWEEN THE ESOPHAGUS AND STOMACH AND THUS ACID FLOWS BACK INTO THE ESOPHAGUS. HE SAID THIS EXPLAINS THE ACID INDIGESTION IN PREGNANT WOMEN. ( I TOLD HIM I THOUGHT IT WAS JUST BECAUSE OUR HUGE BELLY WAS PUSHING EVERYTHING UP..LOL). I TAKE A PROTON PUMP INHIBITOR (EX: PROTONIX, NEXIUM PREVACID...) IN THE AM AND AN ACID REDUCER AT NIGHT (EX: ZANTAC, PEPCID....) AND IT KEEPS MY SYMPTOMS AT BAY.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I'll experiment and see what works the best.
Shelby, what you wrote about the hormones is very helpful and interesting. I didn't realize that estrogen was like a muscle relaxant. It all makes sense to me now as to why I am experiencing more acid. Thanks for sharing!

Here's wishing you all an easier time of it!
