sad.gif Hey Ladies,

Just started taking Coreg today, and stopping Toprol, am feeling lousy, BP is up last reading 154/91, earlier, 180/108, lovely swelling of body and awful headache.

Has anyone else had experience with Coreg? I so hope it starts working soon. I hate starting new meds. I know this is normal starting side effects but I just need some encouragement and anyone who's had good results from it to tell me!

JoniTx50, Why did you switch to Coreg? I am on a low dose of Metoprolol(generic for Toprol). I am trying to split a 25 mg pill into 4ths. Last time, I was at dr to check my bp, I told him how hard it was to split the pill and get precise dose. He asked if I wanted to try something else. He mentioned Coreg. At the time, I didn't ask him why Coreg. Does it come in a smaller dose? I would like to try to get off the bp med all together. I looked on a high blood pressure forum on healthboards. I think some do have bad reactions at first when they take it. I have decided I don't want to try it. You can look on medications.com to see about different meds. You can do a search for reactions/side effects of Coreg.

hi joni!

just wanted to encourage you to stick with the coreg. i was switched to it from toprol in february (before that it was lisinopril, which had terrible side effects for me) due to b/p waaaay out of control. toprol (100 mg/day) didn't cut it for me at all! after an adjustment period of about a month - side effects included slight headache, fatigue, nausea, at least that's all that sticks out in my mind at the moment.

after about a month, i began to feel so much better. actually, better than i had in a few years! i now have more energy, feel more alert, have lost weight without any effort and my family tells me i just seem more relaxed.

the b/p is still slightly high, but my doc doesn't seem concerned and doesn't want to increase the dosage at this time.

so, for me, it's been a great experience. no more dizziness, no more numbness in the extremities, no more weight gain or drowsiness day in and day out! it's been worth switching, in my opinion!

i realize that we're all different and may react differently to individual meds, but i do hope that the coreg works as well for you as it has for me. i don't regret switching for a moment!

hang in there and keep me posted!

Hi Ladies,

I've been on 100mg of Toprol twice a day, and 100mg of Cozaar, and 2mg of Terazosin(Hytrin), and Dynacirc 10mg all in one day for a while. Then Doc took me off of terazosin, and then the Dynacirc seemed to stop working! I tried getting off the Toprol once , but my pulse went up a lot. So I was on Cozaar and 1 Toprol100mg in the morning and 1 10mg Dynacirc in the evening. And I use anti-anxiety meds for anxiety and sleep, and I was on anti-depressants too. I took those in the evening. I also take Levothyroxin for Hypothyroid . I have trouble with meds , my body seems to adapt to them really quickly or not at all, and if quickly, then they just stop working quickly too, and then the bp goes up again. Toprol makes me retain fluids a LOT and feel tired all the time.

I read a book by Robert Kowalski , "The Blood Pressure Cure" and started taking suppliments he reccommended and my bp went down. Then my mom's cardio doc took me off the terazosin, because he said it helped me the least. But then the Dynacirc he put me on seemed to stop working and my bp went back up. So my PCP tried Adalat CC since I'd taken it before, but I had a reaction to it. So , I asked to go to my mom's new cardio doc to help me tweek it. He took me off the Toprol and put me on 25 mg of Coreg.

I called the Doc's office today, and his nurse said she'd talk to him and try to get back to me tomorrow, said he'll probably raise the mg's. I'm on 25mg and it was in the 180's over 110. I started taking my old meds again and it dropped like a dern rock to 106/65 today and I felt faint all day long. Sheese! So.....

It's hard for me to take new meds because they've tried so many and I'm allergic to so many of them. I'm allergic to Sulfa-drugs and codene and demoral, and norvasc, and adalat, and hydroclorathorazine, and so on, .... and I live alone now and it really really panic's me if I feel faint or funny inside! ohmy.gif I hate the waiting game of seeing if they're going to DO something to me or not.

I only took the coreg one day, then went back to old meds. I just couldn't handle the side effects and being by myself, I hate to feel faint or weird all day.

I also have taken Lasix(ferosimide) and Bumetinide for fluid buildup and they also seemed to stop working. I took 40 mg of the ferosimide and 1mg 2x a day of the Bumetinide, and for a while I lived in the bathroom then it stopped working! I took 3 of them in one day and STILL stayed so swelled up I couldn't get shoes on my feet! I stopped taking them because I was afraid that it was building up in my system!

Thanks for your replies and the encouragement. I need it!!! We'll see what the doc says next.

JoniTX50, I hope your dr will be able to help you with the meds. You certainly have gone through a lot.
You take care of yourself! Pam

Now you have me scared. Have an appt. this Friday for my high blood pressure. It has actually been high for years, but not one single dr. has cared enough to offer any suggestions until my Gyn put me on bcp. He was kind enough to call me to make sure I had followed up with a GP. I'm suspecting he'll want me on bp meds. I already feel like poop most every day. What am I to do?

joni: WOW - and i thought I had been on alot of b/p meds!! started when i was 18 and i'm now 43. so sorry to hear it's been such a struggle for you with this issue. i do hope it gets resolved and that you begin to feel better very soon! please keep us posted on how it's going for you. and yes, the side effects and adjustment period for new meds can be h*ll with most of these, but when you find what works for you, it's worth it IMO.

tidal: can i ask why they put you on bcp if you have an issue with high b/p? don't worry about your doc appt! better to get in and get it checked out, get started on some meds and see this thing under control. please keep us posted, too.

(((hugs to you both)))

gyz, I have ovarian cysts that are not dissolving and severe cramps.
gyzwyf83
tw: oh, i see. have they discussed surgery to remove them? i've just begun to experience severe cramping, which feels more like bones breaking rather than the cramping as i used to know it, so i feel your pain for sure!! i'm interested to know what doc says, so don't forget to keep us posted, ok?

hugs!!

gyz, I have a follow up ultrasound scheduled for Sept when the dr. will decide if surgery is necessary. I certainly feel for you too, gyz, because the pain I have had is as bad as labor pain without the break between contractions. No wonder we are all worn down to nothing!!
