Dear Sisters
HELP!!I don't know what to do. My daughter woke up this morning with a shooting pain on the left side of her face. I
'think' it is sinus related, I
'think' her sinuses may be infected and I am making her a Dr's appt for today or a.s.a.p. Her dad has suffered from sinusitis for years......she must have inherited it from him....poor thing

I gave her a benadryl and a gravol and heated a beanbag to rest on her face.
She woke me up crying - - the pain was that bad!!
She has suffered with some form of sinusitis before but never this bad.
Any advise would be most appreciated. It doesn't matter how old our children are......when they are sick we feel so helpless.

Praying for your daughter...best get her checked out by the doctor asap....did you give her any over the counter pain medication? Isn't benadryl for an allergic reaction?

Dear Kar
She woke me up from a dead sleep and I am so NOT a morning person.

..... Yes Benadryl is for an allergic reaction but it was all I could think of at the time. She was feeling sick to her stomach as well.....most likely from the pain and the sinuses draining into her tummy.....so I gave her a gravol to help with that. She had already taken two tylenol.......so now she is drugged up!! In retrospect it probably would have been wiser to let her throw up any of the sinus drainage....but like I said....I was not thinking too straight.
I just peeked into her bedroom and she appears to be sleeping.....moaning.....but sleeping. I called the Dr's office and he is not in today....Grrrr......The secretary does not get in until noon. I may end up taking her into a walk in clinic later today.
Thanks for your prayers

I just got off the phone with my husband. He told me that he went through this when he was in his twenties (our daughter is 19)...and he said it hurts like H**L
I think she needs antibiotics. Thankfully she has only been on antibiotics 3X in her life so it should kick in quickly if it is prescribed for her. Why is it that no matter what.... we think the worse. My knee jerk re-action was ......yep you guessed it.....BRAIN TUMOUR!
I gotta get a grip
Some days it is just not worth chewing through the leather restraints!!
I'll wait until she wakes up....then off to the clinic we go.......

Oh poor Dottie - I'm sure it's nothing serious but I understand how you worry (as a fellow HA sufferer with kids). As far as I have heard, Brain Tumours are usually associated with blackouts, fits, dizzy smells and funny smells, not pain in the middle of the face. This sounds like probably sinusitis or neuralgia. Not nice for you to see her in pain though...

Dot - Lifelong sinus sufferer here! What works best for me is moist heat applied directly to the sinus (like a really hot washcloth) and decongestants....There is also a product here called mucinex which is a mucas thinner....that and 3 Advil usually do the trick....poor baby....I do feel her pain!

Dont diagnose these things yourself. If she's waking you up crying in pain, it could be for any number of reasons. Get her to the clinic asap, dottie.

Jun 2 2008, 10:14 AM
Just wanted to mention two things:
1. Could it be dental related? Sometimes facial pain can be related to a dental problem.
2. If the pain was sharp and shooting, you may want to do some research on Trigeminal Neuralgia. It doesn't usually affect someone that young, but occasionally it does, and your description of " shooting" made me thnk of it. There are meds for that particular type of pain.
Hope you get some answers

Dear
Crazy In Ca Yes I agree in regard to the hot washcloth......but washcloths never stay hot for long so I heated up a beanbag for her. I am going to check into 'mucinex' and see if I can find something similar to that here. Thanks for your help...really appreciate it

Dear
EP............I know hun......and you know that I am the first to tell people to NOT google thier symptoms. I learned THAT lesson a long time ago. It was more of a 'knee jerk' reaction than anything else.
Dear
DawnMy sentiments exactly!! I also thought that it may be dental. I asked her if it felt like shards of glass in her cheek......she told me it felt more like a throbbing....sharp yet dull.....pain. She was in so much pain and as you know it is always difficult to describe the severe pain when you are in the throes of experiencing it.
Dear Squiggle....you are ohh so right...she is gonna be ok

She scared the
Beejebbers out of me though.
She is sound asleep now.....the weeee munchkin. While I am wide awake......thinking......
As soon as she wakes up I am going to take her to the clinic. She wont like that at all......but she will have to do what Mama says......thanks SOOO Much for all your responses......I have 'calmed' down considerably because of your helpful suggestions.

When I have trouble with my sinuses I drink alot of hot liquids--hot apple cider works for me. Hot steamy showers and menthol cough drops. Also...and your gonna laugh at me, massaging the toes and fingertips. I learned this through reflexology. Also applying pressure to the brow area and cheek bones. My chiro does this when I'm having sinus problems.
And of course a good decongestant and Ibuprofen. But most importantly PUSH FLUIDS!!!!
Please don't think I'm wacko...it does work!

Dottie:
I am guessing that your daughter is probably having sinus issues. You said the pain was on the left side of her face. Where exactly is the pain?? Does she still have her wisdom teeth? The only reason I ask is because my son was having terrible facial pain several years ago. After a call to his doctor (who was useless), a trip to the ER (while we were out of town and evacuated for a hurricane), and a trip to an oral surgeon we discovered that one of his wisdom teeth was growing in side ways and under another tooth. We were totally unaware of just how serious this was because he was having to take Viacodin after having shoulder surgery due to an ATV accident. (Yeah...it was a really fun time!!!). So, though it was not obvious that the pain was coming from the tooth, the pain was bad in his jaw and chin. They found that because of the tooth situation, there was a cyst growing around it that was eating through his jaw bone. If we had waited much longer, his jaw would probably have broken. I personally have never heard of anything like this before, but whenever I hear of a young person having facial pain, I mention this.
It ended up the the cyst was benign (trust me when I say I cried and worried about other possibilities for 10 straight days) but it nonetheless ended up being a very painful situation.
Again, I doubt this is the problem with your daughter, but I thought I would make you aware in case you had never heard of this before.

Dear Roxie -- I shall continue to keep the 'faith' ....Love the 'faith'

Dear Jonie -- Thank you for your thoughts and sentiments.
Dear Squiggle -- Oh wise one!! You are right and I had infact forgotten your sage comment....thanks

Dear JJ -- My daughter just left with friends to celebrate Canada Day in Ottawa. Apparently celebrating this day with parents is just not 'cool'

She has a headache but thankfully with her sights on a.....
fun four day festival ...her headache is taking a second seat. Isn't it amazing how the mind works.........She was relief free the whole time she was on meds...which I agree is an excellent sign. I also think that having a catscan will determine IF it is sinus related or a pinched nerve....or something equally benign.
In the meantime...my husband has just rushed off to the hospital as his brother is 'unresponsive'. I am going to drive down there momentarily. My husband does NOT handle stress very well. (that is quite the understatement) This is a common side effect with his dreaded disease.....what I must do is educate the Doctors about his Crigler Disease and get the proverbial ball rolling. I am the advocate and 'advocate' I shall!! My dear SIL is a nurse but is too emotional ...understandable given the circumstances. My BIL has a rare form of liver disease that MUST be watched VERY carefully. Unfortunatley the medical Dr's that replaced his knee did not keep up with his Drs who monitor this disease. Typical example of the right hand not knowing what the left hand is doing.
Off I go to get the.... hands working together and to calm my family.

Helloooooo

A quick update on my daughter......
She had her Catscan on Monday. Quite the fascinating piece of machinery. I couldn't actually be with her while she had her scan ....which by the way lasted about 5 minutes (if that)....but it was cool to actually see a catscan machine. Kar4242 cracked me up in chat before my DD"s scan. She told me that if it was her head the scan wouldn't be very long......I couldn't stop LOLing over that remark.....when I told my DD....that it would be a very quick scan given that it was just her wee 'brain' she was NOT amused....more of a groan and .....geee mom could ya be more corny look!! KIDS!!....they have NO sense of humour!

Anyway......we will get the results sometime next week. She has aan appt with a neurolgist on the 12th of August.......but I think my Dr' is just being ever so thorough and it is nothing more than sinusitus.....psssstttttt...from her fathers side of the family. She only inherited GREAT things from MY side of the family

Went to have my yearly eye exam today and mentioned to my optometrist that I have been experiencing sometimes red flashes for a few seconds and at other times green flashes for a few seconds. She asked me if I ever had migraines? I told her yes, like the kind where I was throwing up my toenails for at least eight to nine hours straight with extreme light and noise and odor sensitivity. She said that from she has known and understands is that the red and green flashes are a form of migraine even though there is no pain. Has anyone else heard of this?

Yes, I am one of those lucky ?????? ones who see lovely red and green flashes with migraines. I haven't really had the colours pain free but I have heard that it can happen. I have also seen lovely splashes of yellow at times. I saw a neurologist and had a CTscan and migraines was my diagnosis. Since crossing over into menopause about the only time I have a migraine is if I overindulge in red wine

I don't see red and green, but I do see yellow/gold zigzag flashes in the shape of the letter "C." It starts as a small "c" and gradually grows to a big honker. It gets so big that after about 20 minutes it's outside of my field of vision.
I used to get the painful migraines, the kind where there's a little man stabbing my brain with a knife. For whatever reason, I haven't had one in about eight years, but the ocular migraines are a fairly new thing. Doesn't bother me.

Dear (((((Sistahs of Da Surge)))))
My DD has her appointment today with the neuroligist......she had a full physical with our GP and she was found to be in perfect health (doing mee wee happy Dottie dance) However the inside of her left nostril was raw. The Dr suggested putting a wee bit of vaseline up there to ease her nosebleeds. I told her to stop doing drugs....KIDDING!!
In the meantime
this Dr will have the catscan results.....I thought her GP would have them...but oopsies I was wrong.
I have bought her a slew of vitamins to help her with her bones, cold symptoms, all that jazz..........she has had fewer headaches and fewer nosebleeds......and I can't help but wonder if she may have some food allergies. She is watching out for side effects with known culprits....i.e. chocolate, pop, tomatoes.....She goes back to university on the 31st so clearly we would like to have this 'solved' before she heads back to school.

Thank you SOOOOO much for ALL your kind responses and your warm and healing vibes.
