I get awful cramps in my feet. It hurts like a charlie horse and bends my feet in ways I thought impossible. I heard that this was a symptom of menopause. They have increased in frequency and I have to have my daughter rub them out. Anyone else heard of this or experience this?

you know you get on this board and you are BOUND to find someone else (usually me) with the same symptom! YES!!! I often get them at night... in bed....I BET it somehow is related to these hormones!

It could be that you are low on calcium. That causes muscle cramps.
When I was 15, more than 30 years ago, I read the book, "Let's Eat Right to Keep Fit" by Adele Davis which is where I learned it.

Are you on bcp? I had terrible cramps every night in both feet whilst on Yasmin. Get it very occasionally now I've come off it.

In a word, yes. Not only do my feet cramp, but my legs sometimes cramp something awful! I had a full week of nagging, cramping legs and feet. My knees creak, too.
NOT FUN!

I love her!! I have been a fan of hers since the late '70s. In fact, for years her books were the bible in my house and kitchen. My children drank raw milk for most of their growing years - and boy, did I catch heck over that, from everyone around me who all seemed to know better! - and I followed her programs, religiously.
After my divorce, when my time was tight and my I felt so drained, I slacked off things a bit - but I'm back trying to keep us (hubby #2 and my youngest child) on a healthier regimen. It's hard, though, because Hubby #2 loves to snack, and so does my youngest child.
What bugs me is that Ms. Davis's books have been edited and abridged, and all that. I still have my copies that were made before her books were messed with - so, maybe I'll look up the section on menopause. Couldn't hurt.

I get alot of cramps in my feet for a few years now, ever since I stopped eating a banana a day due to a sugar problem. It could be lack of potassium...that's what I think might be the culprit. Try eating a banana a day and see what happens.

I just posted about the cramps last week. I get these terrible painfull cramps on the top of the foot. Walking does not help and rubbing them does not either. It just sort of stops after a while. I am trying to figure out if it is related to my cycle. I take plenty of supplements so I kinda ruled out Potassium or mag. If anyone has an answer.......

Could be rheumatoid arthritis.

I get cramps on the top of my foot too. I have been for about 5-6 years (just about when I started all of this peri and meno nonsense). I never really made the connection.....but..........
Oh isn't this stage of life just so very, very wonderful.

Hi,
I get that too. I didn't know that it was a menopause symptom. Boy, it's so much I didnt know. This site is a wonderful source of information. I haven't had many foot cramps lately. I hope yours get better also. Have a wonderful day.

Thank you menopaused. I heard a doctor say that once. I believe it was my rheumatologist that told me that because I was complaining to her about it. My potassium levels were fine so that was not it and she said that peri can cause it. I was shocked! I hope that you are doing well.

I get calf cramping. Honestly, I cannot believe how tight my calves can be. Just like a board.
Haven't been able to tie it to exercise or anything. Just sometimes, the calves cramp up. I have to stretch and walk to get
the cramps out.
I eat a banana a day. The doctor told me to drink tonic water daily for the quinine. I don't always do, just when I have to.
Hoping for cramp free days.

What a blessing this site has been for me since being Divinely led here 3 years ago when I first entered peri menopause..the sharing of your experiences has saved my pocketbook and my sanity!! Every time I encounter a new "symptom" I can be assured to come here and find that someone has written about the same issue!! I have suffered with a foot discomfort on and off for about 4 months now--it seems to be worse during the night--I'm not sure if I can call it a cramp but the pain wakes me up--it is usually on the top or side of my left foot. I went to my gp when it first started and she told me it was likely a sprain and sent me on my way. Two nights ago, it reared its ugly head again and on a whim I came into Power-Surge today and found this discussion. I'm curious what sensations you each feel and how long they last. Thanks!!
God bless you all!!

TillieWills:
Thanks for asking about that. With my brain fried these days, I forget to mention the important stuff. My "cramps" start on the top of my front and it HURTS! That muscle or tendon on top, whatever it is, gets really tight and my toes turn all kinds of ways. It continues for about 15 to 20 minutes. It motly comes in the evenings and can happen lots of times. Rubbing it does not help. I have to let it run its course.

When I was a kid, a swim coach told us if we get "charlie horse" leg/feet cramps - it was due to too much sodium and not enough calcium. I didn't get them them, but I sure get these now. Usually, I'll notice I've eatin' something super salty (i.e., Chinese food; chips... all those salty things one craves at a particular time of the month). See if you're eating too much sodium. Add more calcium to your diet. I hope this helps.

Yes I do get crampy feet. Never put it together now that your mention it! Sometimes I get pains on the bottom of my foot and if I have sandals on, I swear I stepped on a bee. This has happend 3 times in the last week! No bee sting. I also get cramps down my legs into my calves. This is PMS pain that I have had since I was a teenager...but now that I have PMS for 3 months straight it happens all the time! They should teach "menopause" class in High School cause if anyone ever told me this was gonna happen to me in 30 years, I would have never believed them! LOL!

Cramping like you've described can be a side effect of some medications, such as Evista. Also, if you take blood pressure medicine/water pill, the water pill might be the culprit or might add to the intensity of your cramps.
