Dear Sisters,
Our friend Aussie hasn't been on P-S in awhile, but suffice it to say that the past few years she has dealt with a hellish perimenopause.
She has a beautiful baby grandson who turned one last week and seemed in perfect health. Thursday, he began to look ill, developed high fever, and began going downhill very quickly - he has been in hospital since Friday.
Tonight she called from Australia to say he has been diagnosed with meningitis, and is very seriously ill. PLEASE send prayers for little Zachary, and include our friend Aussie in your prayers as well. She is a beautiful lady who has had a hard few years, and it breaks my heart that she must be dealing with this now. She is devastated, and can use the strength of our prayers and good wishes.
Love and (((HUGS))) to all,
Jacquie

Hi All,
I'd like to thank each and everyone of you, for you kind words of support and prayers. I'm so overwhelmed.....
I love my little Zachy so, very much. He's a beautiful, happy little boy, who celebrated his 1st birthday last week, the 12th of May. When I zoom around the family room pretending to be an aeroplane, flying a kiss to him, he laughs non stop, and squints his big brown eyes up in preparation for the kiss to land on his cheek as I get close. Then waits for me to do it all over again.
This time last week, I'd enjoyed taking him to the park on his trike that his parents bought him for his first birthday, one that has a handle attached to it, so that it can be pushed, until the child is old enough to peddle it themselves. He was sitting on his trike, holding onto the handles, singing...la...la....la....as I pushed him to the park. I put him on the play equipment and then we went for a walk, it was a nice time spent together. I want him to be well like that again*S*
We don't know if Zachy has viral or bacterial meningitis, long story.
Again I want to thank you all for your support, good wishes and prayers. They mean a lot to me*S*
*HUGS* to all*S*

Very heartening news this morning!
Aussie called to say that Zachary had a "miraculous" day, going from being so ill he could scarcely move about yesterday, to today walking around on his cot (dragging his IV line behind him), and laughing!

When her daughter had called her at home in the morning before Aussie went to the hospital, she could hear him in the background saying "Quack, quack!"
The family is hugely heartened, recognizing that although Zachary is not out of the woods, he is clearly "coming back" to his sweet little self.
Aussie is very grateful for all the prayers here - she said she was so deeply moved when she came to read people's words, and feels that this has helped bring about the change in Zachary. There's a LOT of power in the love, prayers, and kindness of the P-S Sisters!
(((HUGS))) to all,

I am so pleased. I've been coming here to check regularly. It's so frightening, meningitis. You never used to hear about it years ago and then since the late 90's you hear of it such a lot. Why is this?
Hoping, you'll soon be back in the park Aussie. Does this mean that the family has to have treatment too?

Aussie wrote this morning (it is night there, however) to say that Zachary is home!
He is being carefully watched, will have a nurse come in to administer medication through bandaged, in-place tubes each day, but the doctors felt that with his weakened immune system, he is better being away from germs he could encounter in the hospital.
There was a bit of an overnight scare, as his body temp and heart rate went very low and the doctors feared septic shock, but they came to feel that Zachary's "heating/cooling" system is not working efficiently due to the illness, and he was reacting to the air-conditioning which had been set very high in the hospital.
He will be checked next week for hearing loss, which is very common with this condition. I pray that given that he is responding well relatively quickly, they'll find this is not an issue.
Our sister Aussie is very tired, unquestionably, with the stress of the week, and the physical getting back and forth to the hospital, etc. She has been having a lot of challenging perimenopause issues for a long while now, which has made this even harder. She's a strong lady, and hopefully in the weeks ahead, can slowly regain her energy...
Zachary is still a sick little boy, but he is definitely responding to treatment, and is now home with his beloved family and familiar surroundings and favorite toys. Please keep the prayers coming, at the same time that we celebrate that this little guy is on the mend!
Love to all,
JJ

I've just seen this about Aussie's grandson as I haven't been on the board much lately (another story).
However, my prayers go out to little Zachary, to Aussie and her entire family that Zachary will pull through this and be returned to excellent health very, very soon.
It's so difficult to see a child go through something like this.

Hi All,
I would like to thank each and everone of you for all the prayers and words of encouragement and concern.
I believe, that pray has played a very big part in Zachary's recovery. It was like an absolute miracle, how Zachary's condition, changed overnight. From a little boy laying in his cot, so sick and weak, to sitting up smiling, and progressing as the day went on to walking around his cot, giggling.
Zachary is at home, but hasn't been discharged yet. The hospital has a program called, Hospital at Home, which I think is a wonderful concept. A nurse comes in daily, to check his obs, administer medication, ect. He has a file and his progress is reported to his doctor at the hospital.
JJ has been absolutely fantastic, keeping you up to date, so I won't go into detail*S*
Zachary has shown further signs of improvement today, but is still experiencing low temps overnight, which is being watched.
I'm so exhausted and am having difficulty typing.
Again....I thank you all so very, very much*BIG HUGS*
JJ.....my dear, dear friend. I'd like to thank you for all you've done. We've become such good friends, a friendship that I treasure*BIG HUGS*

Hi all,
Zachary had his hearing test and it was normal. He has to have another one in seven weeks, if it's still normal he'll have his hearing tested every three months for the next year. The first 8 weeks after meningitis is when hearing impairment is more likely to occur, but can hapen anytime within the year. Deafness occurrs suddenly. We're praying that his hearing won't be affected.
Zachary is aneamic, apparently a complication of having meningitis. He is eating well and has put on a little weight.
Again....thank you all for your prayers and words of encouragement, they are greatly appreciated*S*
