Full Version: Umbilical hernia surgery?

Hi everyone. I'm still feeling so much better (after 9 months of symptoms) that I've decided to have the umbilical hernia surgery that I've postponed for almost a year. I find that when I have a gassy stomach (which I have fairly often) the hernia is painful.

Now I'm concerned about the sedation and the one dose of antibiotics they will give me. I don't take ANYTHING after so many bad side effects from meds last summer. I hope this procedure will not be a setback in any way.

The tear is very tiny - fingernail size - but the doctors say the smaller ones are more worrisome because a piece of intestine could easily get "stuck" in the opening.

Anyone have this done? Well, I'm going on Monday!

You are not going to believe this Teach....I had it done too! We are dopplegangers we share so many of the same things! My hernia was a bit lower and the result of a pregnancy....had it done many years ago....surgery was a piece of cake....I didn't have a general....just the kind of anesthetic that puts you in LaLa land .....and I always have trouble with that stuff....it just takes me longer to come out of it....recovery was minimal....stayed in bed for a day (outpatient I take it) and slept it off....it is a teensy painful for a few days but nothing to keep me down....I use Tylenol for a few days....the put a little screen patch in there to prevent it from happening again...and viola...no issues since. good for you for getting this out of the way....the smaller the better and better safe than sorry..good luck...let me know how it goes.....

Hi Helen,
I had an Umbical Hernia done a few years back.

It was a result of having a Gall Bladder operation and not letting things settle down before I got Pregnant.

I had some discomfort after the op but on the whole I healed really well.

When you have it done make sure that when you get up from laying down that you swing your feet over to the floor and get up slowley as things will feel like they are pulling a bit for awhile.

I had a General Anesthetic and came around fine. It took 2 weeks or so for me to start feeling comfortable after the op.

Good Luck on Monday for your op. I hope all goes well for you?

Take Care from Deb.
