I have been having intermittent episodes of itching followed by swelling in different areas of my body lately and I am wondering if it could be caused by hormones. Most frequently, I will feel an itch near my lips and next thing you know, my lip will be completely swollen and will stay that way for hours. Last night after having dinner out with my daughter, the sole of my foot started itching terribly and swelled up as well. I have never had any type of allergy before so I am not sure what is going on. This has happened a few times over the last few weeks and I am baffled. I mentioned it to my doctor the other day during a physical and she prescribed an epi pen to keep on me in case it ever progresses and also suggested that I keep track of what I eat and use for a while to see if there is a pattern.

Has anyone experienced anything like this relative to peri?

Hi Maura, not sure if it's caused by hormones or not, but occasionally the same thing happens to me. Usually mine is on my sides under my breast area. I too never had allergy issues until probably 3 years ago. What helps my itching/swelling is an antihistamine. I use Sudafed PE. Also, I bathe now with Aveeno and it helps my skin stay moist because I've noticed dry skin makes it worse.

Not absolutely sure if it's hormonal, but sounds like a hive. I know that hormonal changes do have an effect on the the skin. And to some degree, at least for me stress will make it worse. If you feel an itch before the swelling my bet is a hive, I get those all the time and scratching makes them swell. Try not to rub or scratch , but instead put cold water or ice on it, follow with a little otc cortisone cream. Sounds very localized, your just getting 1 or 2 at a time? If you had them all over, that would be more of a concern. BTW, i'm an Esthetician..I know a few things about the skin. If that doesn't help, you can always try the dermatologist. wink.gif Ruth
