Hello all,
just wondered if any of you suffered from hemeroids since menopause set in? and if so could you tell me some of the symptoms what causes them and how to deal with them, as I think I may have developed them recently. blink.gif

Hi HB,
I think haemorrhoids are really cruel, don't you. 'Life's a bitch and then you get haemorrhoids.' The trouble is everyone gets them but it is not the sort of thing to discuss at your next dinner party. Lol.
Seriously though, I think that they appear at this time of life because the hormonal changes cause a slowing of the gut and constipation then leads to straining which gives rise to soreness and inflammation. In essence they are varicoes veins of the botty! The symptoms tend to be lots of soreness and a bruised feeling after going to the loo. Sometimes itching becomes a problem. Haemorrhoids can bleed and they often frighten people to death because they fear the worst when they see blood on the toilet tissue. The first line of attack is to try and keep the system working well. You know your system better than anyone but it may need a little help at this time. If you can use natural remedies so much the better but alternatively, there are some good products out there to keep things soft and moving.
Warm soothing saline baths and haemorrhoid preparations from the pharmacy can help in the short term. Usually things improve over several days but if you are very uncomfortable it is best to go and see your doctor. There are lots of things that can be done to help you.

Hi hunny bunny:

I have been a hemmoroid sufferer since i gave birth tto my second child. In fact to be very graphic as I was in the throes of pushing him out my doc said they looked the size of golf balls - now thats gross!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL

Anyway - the worst thing for hemmoroids is to push hard when you have a bowel movement so if I were you I would start taking some magnesium in either magnesium calcium form, I take 2:1 mag to cal or magnesium citrate, I take both. That should soften up your stool enough to pass them more easily. Straining is the enemy. Also there are various preparations you can buy OTC to shrink them but I don't use them. Also, drink lots of water.

When the irritation acts up I use an ointment called balmex usually used for diaper rash.

Hope that helps - Hugs - Pookish

I recently has a scary incident of loads of bright red blood in the toilet after going!!!! I was referred to the hospital for a sigmoid something or other test (a camera up the bum....very embarrassing). anyway it appears I have got haemeroids that I knew nothing about. very strange really as I have never had a natural childbirth or ever needed to strain when going to the loo so maybe it is hormonal. I've had no other symptoms before or since except for the blood that day.

hemeroids anyone? oh yes.
Since my hysterectomy, 10 years ago, as got very constipated afterwards, I was convinced they had stuck something up there and forgot it LOL.

They flare up from time to time and I find the hemeroid cream a relief and use it eveytime I go, just to keep them at bay.
I eat wholemeal bread and eat as much fruit as possible, just to keep regular and it works for me and keeps them under control.

best wishes
Caroline
