I have never had any cysts on my ovaries before. I went to the doctor yesterday because I got a period in between my period. The doctor found one 6cm cyst on my right ovary, and then my left ovary has a 4cm cyst, but the ovary is also enlarged. Also, the doctor thinks the cyst on my left ovary might have two different kinds of fluid in it. I have Hashimoto's Disease (autoimmune deficiency that causes hypothyroidism) and I'm wondering if this is related to it. I know that Hashimoto's can cause polycystic ovary syndrome, but does one cyst on each ovary qualify for that? Also, I had to have a CA125 done to see what that is, and am waiting for that to come back. The doctor feels that this is probably 90 percent not cancer, but he just isn't sure. Has anyone had something like this happen before? blink.gif

Hi Kaths,

I'm sorry to hear about your ovary situation. I don't have thyroid disease ( as yet), but I did have a cyst type growth on my right ovary a few years ago. It was called a dermoid (sp). It grew to 5cm by the time I had surgery.

My symptoms were spotting between periods/heavy periods and really bad cramps. I had this going on for 11 months before I finally had surgery. During the surgery, they said that the tumor/cyst had wrapped around the ovary and so "all" had to be removed. They also did a D & C at the time to clean out the uterus.

The type of cyst that I had was probably not going to ever shrink, but just grow bigger. Have they given you any options yet on what to do??? Will these shrink with time??

I was worried about cancer also, but they (the doctor's) were confident that it was benign. I know it's scary to deal with this. Sorry I can't be more help.

Hi Kaths,

I had two cysts, one on each ovary, and one of the ovaries appeared to be enlarged. One cyst was 5 cm and that one appeared to be solid on the ultrasound. The other cysts was smaller, but that ovary appeared enlarged on the ultrasound. The doctor said they didn't appear to be cancerous on the ultrasound and my CA125 test came back normal, but because one was solid, they felt it best to remove it. My doctor felt it best to remove the entire ovary because I guess when cysts are solid, they COULD be cancerous and they don't like to take any chances of removing just the cyst and having some cancer cells escape, so they took the entire ovary. For the other cyst, they removed just the cyst, but that one was bleeding into the ovary which is what made it appear enlarged on the ultrasound, so they drained the ovary. Both cysts were benign. The solid one was an endrometrioma (sp?) which is just endometrial tissue that forms a cyst in the ovary. It was done laproscopically and the surgery was a piece of cake.

Have they told you they want to remove them or are they going to wait a few months to see if they resolve themselves? From what I've read about POS, there are other symptoms associated with that like acne, excessive hair growth, etc., so I don't think that having a cyst on both ovaries necessarily means you have POS, but I could be wrong.

Good luck and if you do need to have the surgery and have any questions, let me know.
