Ok..brief history..I'm almost 54, been perimenopausal for last few years. Not on any hormones. Some mild hot flashes were noticeable last year, but periods were pretty regular...until last summer when I had a marathon period...around 60 days long! Stopped that with Prometrium and a "mini" D&C. Then in Nov/Dec..back to normal, periods starting almost on time, totally like the old days. About 6 weeks ago...hot flashes REALLY start...very noticeable..waking me up at night, kicking off the covers, wanting to rip my nightgown off, chilling and covering back up. Flashing many times during the day too. Apparently have skipped my first period ever (except when pregnant of course!) last month! I would be due for the next one in 3 days. So..I guess that counts as a miss???
Here's what's strange...about 2 weeks ago I think I did ovulate...didn't feel anything but had the mucousy discharge....have felt NOTHING since...not one hot flash in at least the past 2-3 weeks...NOTHING. No cramps...no flashing..no sore breast, not anything! In fact...I feel very good! (other than horrible pollen allergies...which I NEVER had in my life till last year, and a mild cold).
So what's going on?? What does it mean when all the intense flashing suddenly STOPS? Does this mean I WILL get my next period?? Or maybe skip my next one?? What's everyone's experience with these symptoms??
thanks!

I hear you loud and clear!
I am almost 56 (next month) and I am still having periods also. I went for 18 months without, and then they spontaneously started again. I have had flooding episodes over the last year that have required Progesterone (not to mention several changes of clothes...), and there is no sign of things letting up. Hot flashes come and go, and there was a time when I used to say that my comforter was better traveled than I am.
If I have learned one thing from this wonderful kinship of women, it is that we have similar symptoms on different timetables. I wish I could be of more help to you. But I can really empathize.
Take good care and post often. We all want to know how you are doing.
Smiles,

When I started missing periods I would flash like crazy, and then the flashing would let up I knew I would get a period, which I always did. Usually shortly after the period the flashing would start up again and would continue until shortly before my next one. I went close to 2 years having a period every 3 months. After I had my last period I started flashing ALL the time, I take BHRT now and no long flash which means I am sleeping a lot better.
If you are anything like me, the lack of flashing could mean a period is on its way.....or not! as we are all different!!

My experience has been pretty similar to Floater's. I am almost 47 and have been skipping an occasional period here and there. I had one in the beginning of Jan. and then skipped Feb. I had 2 weeks of horrendous hot flashes, night sweats, even cramping, but no period. Then, *poof* it all went away. And my period showed up without warning about 10 days later. It has been surprising light, though it has been a week now of dribbling with off and on "gushes" as I call them. I was surprised. I was afraid it would be heavy.
So, I guess time will tell for you! Seems to be a guessing game for me. Good luck!

Well, what you all said was right on the money! My period started today! (darn).......So.........all that flashing happened when I SKIPPED Feb's cycle...and all this NON-flashing signaled that a period was going to start! Two days before I was supposed to have one, IF I had had one last month (does that make sense?)
So now I'm back on a schedule..of some sort. Will be interesting to see what happens after this. I suppose now that if I start getting all the hot flashes again, I might skip one again.......one can only hope!
Thanks for all your replies and sharing your experiences! I love to "compare notes", knowing I'm not the only one out there going thru a crazy time:

Hi there,
For me, the missing of periods equals flashing, insomnia and feelings of panic. As soon as my periods returned all those symptoms disappeared. I think that when the flashing is at its height the ovaries are loosing control of the system. I suppose I didn't expect the menopause to be so stop start in nature. It's good to get reassurance that this state of affairs is perfectly normal.
I am peri menopausal and my allergies have gone nuts! The other day I went to give a gorgeous cart horse a carrot. He was very cheeky and started nuzzling me for more. Almost instantly my hand swelled up and the skin had a scranny. We were in the open air but my nose and throat reacted badly. I now can't sit next to anyone who owns a dog because my body sets the alarm bells ringing - How daft is that!!! Gosh I hope that this is temporary.....

Update........well, so much for my theory......apparently this "period" isn't a period at all....it was just a BLIP of spotting yesterday...so brief, it doesn't really count. Nothing since. So.....was that the period that was "supposed" to have been this week? Did that brief ovulation I felt 2 weeks ago trigger just that blip?
Or is something looming ahead..like massive gushing or something?
Its the uncertainty of this all that keeps me on edge. Never knowing quite what to expect. I come here for comfort and support..its wonderful!
Still, no more flashing. I feel very good, lots more energy than I've had recently. Feel more "myself". Probably will be shortlived, huh:)
Allergies still bad......I'm sure its pollen, as I went thru this last year when my trees started leafing out. Its ash and alder...and my whole backyard are those trees. The allergy report for my neck of the woods, says those are the predominant pollens right now. It figures!
