Another update from me. After returning to my NP after my period, she had me go for a biopsy. The surgeon was great. He did a complete breast exam. Thought the nodule felt fibrocystic and did a cone biopsy taking twelve samples. This was last Friday -- one week ago. On Monday he called. Said he met with the pathologist and everything was normal. Although, he'd like me back in 3 months -- to check again and follow-up. Is that normal? My concern is that the biopsy site still hurts. For the first three days afterwards, the whole right quadrant felt very hard. It is now down to a really hard little lump -- much more firm than when I went in. when I bend over the site hurts. Is this normal? My husband keeps telling me it's the trauma to the breast, but I'm scared it's cancer even though the biopsy came back normal tissue. I need some reassurance. Thank you. Dana

Dana,
As someone who has had a breast biopsy - I can tell you from my own experience that yes you will be sore for awhile - and prehaps even bruised! If he took twelve tissue samples, that would give significant trauma to the breast tissue. I would not worry too much if I were you. Each day should get a little better. If you are still concerned at the first of next week - call your surgeon for some reassurance.
I really think and believe - from my own memory and experience - that this is normal.
Take care!

I had a suspcious lump and biopsy of my breast in 2004 and I couldn't believe how painful it was afterwards. The surgeon told me it would hurt "for a few weeks" but it was much worse. I had pain, quite severe at times, for months afterwards. And it felt hard, just as you described. I've talked to other women who've had surgery on their breasts and they say the same thing. It's extremely traumatizing to the tissues to be cut into and sewed up. I don't know why in heaven these doctors minimize how painful it can be.
It's understandable to still be worried; I was too. And I had to follow up every 3 months for a year. So far so good, but just because you get the "all clear" report doesn't mean you stop being freaked out. It takes awhile for your emotions to calm down.
Truth be told, to this day, almost 4 years later, the breast that was operated on is 'sensitive.' If my husband tries to touch it, it doesn't feel comfortable. I don't know if this is psychological or not, but it sure is real.
You've been through a big ordeal...give yourself some time to recover from this; be good to yourself, take it very, very easy and get a lot of rest.
Let me know how you're doing...
Your meno pal,
robin
