I don't know if I am becoming more sensitive to noise, or what, but I just can't stand being in noisy places! My husband and I went out to lunch last week and we must have picked the peak of the lunch hour, because the restaurant was packed. They are speedy there, so we didn't have to wait long to get in. But once we were sitting down, the noise level was almost unbearable! You know how it is.....so many people having so many conversations, you aren't even aware there is music being played! Fortunately, we got served quickly, but I was still ready to throw my burger in my purse and leave!

And it's not just restaurants. It's the crowded mall or the kid screaming in the small echoing bathroom or even my own house! The TV drives me nuts! I make my husband shut the door. I can't stand it! I can feel the tension creeping across my neck and shoulders! This weekend, in spite of the warm weather, I chose to close my back doors because the neighbors behind me had company and were being too loud! Sometimes I won't even go somewhere if I know it will be crowded and noisy. So, am I the only one who can't deal with noise? Am I turning into a crotchety old lady?

Right now I am home alone and it is blissfully quiet and peaceful! I enjoy it when I can! Gardenbear

You're definitely not the only one. I've become intolerable about loud noise too -- can't stand big restaurants. Even to the point where I can't hear myself think if there is music or loud conversation ... certainly makes it hard to ride the train to work and read!

Well I must be a crotchety old lady too, because I am finding the same.
Nothing like my own company with no noise, just blissful peace and quiet.
We went out for the day today to a lovely country location , was looking forward to the peace and quiet there but its schools half term holidays and the world and his wife turned up too, absolutely manic.
Nice to get home again.

Hi crotchety old ladies,
I have been there and hope for you all that it is for you as it was for me, just a phase.
I went through it a couple of years ago, even back ground chatter in the office drove me mad, I could not stand music, one of my great pleasures, I could not play my guitar and everywhere was just too loud and too chaotic.
After about 6 months of this, it started to ease and now I am back to normal most of the time. Now I just get it at times of stress, Christmas day was one of them for me, I just was so glad to leave my family day and come back home to the quiet.

OMG I can totally relate. I love peace and quiet, hard with a teenage daughter that plays her music loudly in my car and has her music on the same time the TV is on. I am constantly turning the volume down the this creates alot of conflict.
Also, when people are around my area at work and they start conversing, it takes all of my will power not to tell them to be quiet, sometimes I just walk away and go to the ladies room until they all finish.
I can't hear myself think!!!
I know when I had really bad anxiety, the noise was unbearable, could not sit still to watch TV. The beeping noise that a truck makes when it is backing up, feels like finger nails on a chalk board...

Hi Gardenbear,
Count me in with the "Cranky Old Lady" crowd.

I don't like noisy places either. I used to like watching football with dh but here lately I can't stand the roaring noise of the crowd. I had to sit out of the super bowl because I couldn't stand it. I am glad to hear from others that this too will pass.

I guess I must be a cranky old lady my whole life or almost my whole life. I have always loved peace and quiet. Just sitting out in the meadow with only the birds and wind where always a favorite thing for me to do even when i was younger. What bothers me the most now is screaming kids. It just makes me feel like someone taking their nails on a chalk board.

Ditto! This began over a year ago when I was living with my daughter and her 3 kids. I'm trying to sleep at 10pm on weekends (I work all weekend) and the kids were up til midnight or after with their loud voices, tv's and video games. My daughter refused to ask them to quiet down
just for my benefit, so I moved out a year ago. Now I enjoy the peace and quiet and 'my own company'--because I
like me!

add me to the cranky old lady bunch. i used to love to turn up a favorite song and the kids noise never bothered me. now it seems i cant stand the noise at all. every bang, the roughhousing, the loud music, makes me insane. i was out to eat one day and it was so loud that i had to get up and leave. people were screaming over each other to hear each other and i thought i would kill someone. granted it was a weekend but years ago that environment would have never bothered me, now, i couldnt get out of there fast enough.

Thank you, ladies! Glad to know I have company in my "cranky old lady club!"

I can relate to everything you all have said....I feel the same way! I treasure being home alone, with the quiet! Maybe that's why I like gardening....I find it peaceful. As long as the neighbors aren't around to disturb me! I am hoping this, too, shall pass, as Amanda said it did for her. But I have to wonder if it comes back in later years? My 84 year old mother is always complaining about noisy restaurants and has been known to give a screaming child an icy glare! I was in Target once and some kid was having a tantrum and an elderly lady yelled, "Shut up!" and kept on walking! I was thinking the same thing, but wasn't brave enough to say it!

Peace everyone! Gardenbear

Gardenbear,
No. You are not alone. I can't stand loud noise either, whether it be my kids squabbling or the t.v. on. And I seem to perceive noises as being louder than they actually are or louder than other people perceive them. Noise makes me want to jump out of my skin. I like it nice and quiet as well. Maybe we are just crotchety, but more likely just hormonally challenged!!
Wishing you lots of soothing quiet days.

My ear problems came to a head in church at a large event. I had to leave due to the pain in my ears from the sounds and noise of singing and clapping. I was in tears with the pain. I was putting my finger in my ear every time the people clapped because the sound was so painful. This was the beginning of all noise causing pain. I like you thought I was going to have to become a hermit to avoid noise. I began seeing doctors. First, I had my ears tested and they are in perfect working order. then I went to an ear, nose & throat expert who said I had TMJ. So I started wearing a mouth piece at night to prevent teeth grinding, which I did not do. I do not have TMJ. So, i kept researching on the internet and found a page from a man who had discovered his and his sons ear pain was relieved with magnesium. Yes, magnesium deficiency will cause ringing in the ears. The site which I have lost track of claimed that eating a meal rich in magnesium such as refried beans would help. I never had any relief from eating legumes but have had excellent results from taking magnesium supplements. I would take 500mg two to three times a day getting relief in minutes. After taking it for a number of weeks I found that I could skip days, then weeks. Eventually taking the supplement only when my ears began to hurt. For me it is now like taking aspirin for a headache. I am new to the power surge site which I found while looking for data on the menopause supplement, Amberen. I have been on Amberen for two weeks with wonderful results. Amberen has magnesium in it! I still may need to take some extra magnesium with it as I have some mlid pain in my ears today.

I hate loud noises. I was at McDonalds one time, there was a kid infront of me at the drive thru. He ordered then turned his music up so loud that my windows started rattling and i had an immediate panic attack and started crying. I could not get out of line and I could not order because of him. I thought my ears would burst. I still have this - the kids in the neighborhood go by my house with the music bumping and I freak out instantly. I cant stant noisy places anymore either. I just get absolutely crazy with anger and fear.
I guess I am crocheted old lady too and I dont care. If I ever have an extra $5000 I am going to invest in a hearing aid company because by the time these "kids" are 30 they wont be able to hear anything at all and I am going to the bank!!!

Wow! Crotchety club I'm in!! It seemed to just happen one day... But now that I think about it, it probably started in my late 30's. Turning the radio down in the car... Avoiding crowded noisy places... sporting events (which I loved), avoided... The TV drives me nuts - the advertisements come on and blow me out of the chair - They're so loud!!! Thank goodness for MUTE! Loud talkers/loud laughers make me want to run, run away from them. I have fingers in my ears and/or hands over my ears often. Especially at the movie theater. I realized one day why mother's may loose it and beat their children - the crying and screaming - oh my - nooooooo. They do have industrial ear plugs - I think I'm gonna try next time I go to the movies. Or moms with little ones, stick a pair in your pocket!! LOL
