Full Version: Flaxseed for sweats? I'm on day 3 of this.....

Has anyone ever tried the milled (ground) flaxseed for night/day sweats? I have been having nonstop flashes since August at the rate of 15-20 per day and 2-3 per hour all night long. A friend told me to pick up some milled flaxseed and sprinkle it on my cereal every morning, but to give it time to work since it usually takes about 6 weeks for your body to respond to it. Well, I started on Saturday (Today is Monday) and have noticed my flashes lessening in frequency and severity. Last night (Sunday) was the first night since August that I slept through the night without having a night sweat and I have had no flashes at all today! Is this just a coincidence or could the flax seed really be working this quickly? Has anyone else ever used flaxseed and if so, how long did it take for your body to respond to it? One more thing, I didn't realize that flaxseed has so many health benefits either! Thanks, ladies for any replies!

Hi - I have tried flax and I think it does work come to think of it. I use it every morning on my oatmeal except on the weekends and come to find that this weekend I had night sweats. So maybe it does work!!!
plumeria
Yes, flaxseed is considered a phytoestrogen and is known to help with peri/meno symptoms. Recommedned dose is 2- 4 tablespoons, use in cereal, yogurt, smoothies, etc.

Thank you dear ladies for your replies. Well, I hope I've found my answer to all my flashes. I can't believe flaxseed would work so quickly, but honestly, the difference in how I feel is amazing! I suppose anything is possible during peri, right?
I'll let you know if it continues to do the trick!

I have been taking flaxseed oil capsules for nearly a year now and I have had no or very little night sweats during this time in fact for the past few months I have none at all during my period. I have found that taking too much flaxseed has caused me some discomfort at times escpecially at period time or ovulation so beware and don't overdo it. I have had to tweak my dosage and now I only take one capsule at most per day and sometimes I just skip a day, I let my body tell me what it wants and when it wants it now as it's the best judge.....

I've been researching this since reading the thread yesterday. I came across this from the National Institute of Health....

"Flaxseed contains lignans (phytoestrogens, or plant estrogens), while flaxseed oil preparations lack lignans."

But then it goes on to say "There is preliminary evidence from randomized controlled trials that flaxseed oil may help decrease mild menopausal symptoms. Additional research is necessary before a clear conclusion can be drawn and this remains an area of controversy." All very confusing!

If this is true, I wonder how the oil is helping you? I'm interested in trying this but want to make sure it could actually work. I'd much rather take the oil caps and not the ground flaxseed.

I just read in the Health section of the paper yesterday that Flaxseed (whole or ground) does help with hot flashes. They recommended 2-4 tbsp. per day as Plumeria mentioned. The article was based on an NIH study I think and said the milled flaxseed was better than the oil because it gives you fiber, an added bonus. Although I don't really have hot flashes yet, I have been using the flaxseed on my cereal, yogurt, and in my protein shakes. I really think it has helped lower my cholesterol -- could be another added bonus!

Hi longlife88...........

Firstly I have been taking an organically New Zealand grown and manufactured flaxseed oil capsule since approx feb/march last year on the recommendation of my homeobotanitist. She also made up a homeobotanical remedy for me at the same time as recommending the flaxseed oil. She recommended 2 capsules a day one at morning and one at night so that is what I started on. I felt okay for the first month and lo and behold my periods became extremely regular every 28 days on the dot for the next 3 months at the same dose of 2 capsules a day. But then I started to notice I was getting terrible drawing dragging aching pain in my lower pubic area when I would get my period kinda like real bad period pain or something which I don't usually get at all and my lower back would be so painful that I couldn't walk or stand for very long, thankfully this only lasted for the first real day of my bleed then would subside. I did notice that my blood flow was a little heavier but not heavy as I have always had light periods and the clots became less and less but the duration was a little longer more like 4-5 days instead of 3 mad.gif . This happened month after month getting slightly worse each time and I started to get bad ovulation type pain on one side or the other but mainly my left side each month so I decided to up the dose to 2 capsules twice daily to see if I needed more and this just made things even worse so I dropped the dose back to 2 a day then cut it down to one a day now which seems to be better for me. My periods are now coming every 26 days which has always been my normal cycle and no period pain and very little ovulation discomfort so I think I have found the magical dose for me at one capsule a day. I am extremely med and supplement sensitive so less it more for me. I think for me it may have made me more estrogenic at the higher doses as some months my breasts would be very tender and some not but now they're back to normal too.

I can also say I have had no panic attacks either since beginning the flaxseed and my night sweats have disppeared too but I wasn't having hot flashes unless I took Evening Primrose Oil then I would flash all over the place ohmy.gif .

So in my humble opinion it certainly does have phytoestrogen properties as my sensitive body found out the hard way and I have read on the website of the brand I take that the ground flaxseed containing lignans is better for it contains fibre and has benefits for managing cholesterol and blood sugar levels among other things. It is hugely promoted here in New Zealand by the health food stores and natural practitioners as it is a good alternative for omega 3 for people who can not take fish oils like myself and the local homegrown brand's processing is more stringently monitored.

From what I understand phytoestrogens are supposed to be quick to get to the estrogen receptors in our body therefore occupying their space and being weaker in effect as opposed to the bad xenoestrogens we uptake in our everyday life from external sources.

Also flaxseed oil is supposed to be excellent for hair and nails. So far my hair is in excellent condition again even tho it's bleached blonde on top and very long but my poor nails are still not so good most months but then I don't really look after them not being girly and all laugh.gif lol..........

P.S. I do take vitB6 also which is supposed to downregulate bad estrogen too from what I have researched and I do feel better taking that also.

Is Estroven all natural? Does it have any side effects? Is it harmful to take it if these night sweats aren't from menopause? I am only 44. blink.gif

well... i've been sprinkling two heaped tablespoons of LSA on my cereal and cooking it into my porridge (oatmeal) for just over a week now, no change to my flashes or sweats, so i hope it's helping my cholesterol levels at least..

LSA is ground Linseed (it's what we call flaxseed here in AU apparently) Sesame seed and Almonds...

I've been taking Flaxseed capsules for a few weeks now, but also added some powder to sprinkle on my cereal. However, I then noticed a burning sensation in my throat/oesophagus while eating my breakfast. I first thought it was another of my newer supplements, but I tried leaving out the powder and I have no burning. Has anyone else had this strange 'side-effect'?

OK-I've been taking the flaxseed oil caps (one 1,000 mg.) for 8 days now. I started them last Sunday. Wednesday and Thursday, I was hot flash-free. Friday, they were back--full-blown! Saturday and yesterday, I only had them a couple times at work and they didn't last very long. So...... maybe too soon to tell, I don't know. I'll keep on them and see if I notice any more improvement. unsure.gif

Hi Rox,.
What kind of discomfort did you have with the flaxseed oil? I am on my way out to buy some now...right after this flash blink.gif. I am trying to find something that helps. I appreciate your input and this site. Thanks
