Hi girls,

Have read that frequent peeing can be one of the signs of peri as listed in the 66 signs posted somewhere on this site. Must admit I do have a fair bit of fluid to drink during the day and evening but my latest symptom at the moment is waking up to wee several times during the night which is extremely annoying cause I find it hard to get to sleep due to aches and pains in hip and back. This is only a recent problem.

Is anyone else out there experiencing this weeing problem during the night and how do you deal with it. Can anxiety cause it?

Freuda, one of the symptoms of anxiety IS having to pee!! I noticed when I was having the anxiety bad, I was having to "go" a lot! I didn't know this until a few months ago, but it did make a lot of sense. Have you ever noticed that you can need a washroom during stressful events? When it seems almost inappropriate? But you gotta go BAD!!!

I don't have to get up in the night anymore, but I certainly have in the past, and it is very hard on your sleep. Try and not drink in the evenings, and of course stay away from caffinated drinks because they are diuetics. Make sure you empty your bladder before bed, even if you don't think you need to go. Other than that there isn't much you can do. Try and keep your anxiety down ( blink.gif and exactly HOW does one do that in peri??) You could try some L-Theanine, or Valerian to help you be calm. It should pass, as the saying goes...this too shall pass.

Floater I notice that I also have to make many mad dashes to the little girl's room when my anxiety level is high. I did not know tht this was an anxiety symptoms...I just thought this was something my body did in dealing with anxiety. Now I know smile.gif.

Freuda, I ditto Floater's suggestions because they work for me, although I still keep drinking water before going to bed. Recently, I've been exercising late at night and after exercising I am quite thirsty. Of course after a couple bottles of water to quench my thirst I know that I'm going to be up multiple times during the night. Back in my before peri days this would not have been an issue, but declining estrogen also affects our bladder.

Hi Freuda, I have had this problem for a while now. I also have the aches in hips and back and it can take me a while to get back to sleep. If I leave it too long before going I also get abdominal aches. Have had my urine tested several times and nothing's been found - although this problem started for me with a urine infection several months ago. It could just be that your bladder has become sensitive due to hormonal changes in peri. I find that restricting fluid intake in the evenings does help a little. Restricting your diet to bland, non-acidic types of food and drink could also help if your bladder's irritated. Jess

Hi Frueda
I have found that I have to wee much more often as I have got older (53).
Normally the body stops making much urine during the night so we don't need to wake up to wee. If you are sleeping lightly or taking a while to go to sleep then your body could still be in daytime production! I find if I take more than half an hour to go to sleep I either have to get up to wee or wake up during the night to go.
Other causes could be an infection or early diabetes.
Your back and hip aches and pains are a bit concerning... have you had your urine checked? It is possible that you may have a slight infection. Are you peeing more during the day or getting thirsty? If so a urine/blood check for glucose would be a good idea.
If these are clear then not drinking too much in the evening and nothing fluid for an hour before bed should help. If I have a drink within an hour of bedtime I ALWAYS have to get up to wee!

have had this issue in recent years, but i find i am once again sleeping through the night without having changed any of my drinking habits.. i'm nearly 55, hopefully nearly post (11 months now) i do drink a lot of water in the day, especially on gym days of course. i don't know about your aches and pains, are they recent as well? something different that should be checked out?

I'm usually up 2 or 3 times a night to go to the bathroom. Lately I have been waking up every 2 hours on the dot. This compounded with my increasing hot flashes and night sweats has left me very tired and grumpy! However, I have been on antibiotics and a decongestant for a sinus infection this past week, so have had to drink extra fluids. I am hoping that once I am off the meds, I can sleep better. Sometimes I do only wake up once, and I'm like WOW! How did that happen?? I do find that when it is close to me period, I have to go more often. I echo the other ladies suggestions for you, though. Maybe it is just peri, but since you are having aches and pains, you might want to have it checked out just to be sure.

Thanks for your replies.

I do think my problem is likely anxiety related as this symptom has only just started about two weeks ago (I am extremely stressed and anxious at the moment).

I had a bit of a chat with my old mum who is in her 80's about menopause symptoms and how they affected her. I asked her about aches and pains, getting up to pee at night, bleeding etc. She just said to me "at that time of life your whole body is stuffed" and that she had symptoms very similar to mine including awful back and leg ache, frequent weeing day and night, huge clots and lots of bleeding as well as eyesight disturbances, the list goes on. She also said that the pressure of everything down there sometimes presses on the bladder and causes peeing problems. So there you go ladies there is some information from a survivor of the last generation. She told me to stop worrying because i'd get through it.

I also asked her how long it all lasts she said between 10 and 15 years. Good grief!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ohmy.gif She did say that you get your good moments. However I am going to go and get a urine test.

Thanks once agein for your replies.

Hugs Freuda.
