Does anyone get post nasal drip as a symptom of Peri?

I am not feeling congested at all but for a few months have had really thick globs of this go down my throat every so often. I've never even had this before. I looked it up and saw that a fluctuation in homones can cause a production in mucus resulting in this. It noted it as happening with pregnancy and use of birth control pills, but i assume menopause would be included in this as well.

Yep... mucous membranes are sensitive to hormones. I go through a phase 4 or 5x a year that I sound so nasal and get some sort of *pain* in my(always left) sinus when I try and blow my nose. It is eventually relieved by some gloppy clear thick discharge...love the graphics ;0)...I also notice that I need to cough up some *stuff* lately and it is not associated with any sort of cold at all. So I guess somehow I have dry sinuses but also mange some sort of post nasal drip. What a combo...go figure!!!
I'm begining to wonder if there isn't anything that is peri related!!!

One of these days you will tune into the national news and the first story will be "DC Area Woman Drowns in Post Nasal Drip."

Need I say more?

as a sinus sufferer since puberty, i only last year made an endocrine connection to the miserable state. sorry to hear that you all are in the club (wow, marcy, that sounds bad but it did make me laugh). extended post nasal misery may be a sign of chronic infection, so anyone suffering for multiple weeks may want to check with the doc (infections can be very hard to clear). use of a neti pot or other device (neilmed bottle) to irrigate the nasal passages can be a very helpful part of clearing the area of mucus, etc. & anything that helps to keep the nasal passages clear & draining will help. but i think we definitely get both inflammation & dryness contributing to our problems.

I just started suffering from Post Nasal drip around 3 years ago, and my doctor said YES it is associated with menopause, and he gets numerous complaints about it from women going through the change. I have had test after test and there is NO infection, and this 'drip' has been going on pretty much constantly with me. Saline spray helps me immensely; it cuts the thickness and helps ease the nasal passages. Also, a good humidifier helps it at night. It's disgusting and VERY annoying. Sometimes I think instead of menopause, it should be called anxietysinuspause!!!

I also developed post nasal drip that led to a chronic 'wet' cough during perimenopause. Taking Mucinex to thin the secretions and an antihistamine (I use prescription Allegra) to dry up the mucus daily when needed stops the cough.

Wow, Thanks for the replies. I had no idea. It at least gives me another clue that what i'm going through could be the start of Peri. I don't think i have an infection since it happens just once or twice every few days with no other cold symptoms. It's sooo thick though. Like swallowing a walnut.

I have posted dozens of times on the message board, plus it's in articles on the Web site -- HISTAMINE LEVELS ARE AFFECTED BY HORMONE LEVELS AMD VICE VERSA.

Hence, many of the respiratory problems women find themselves experiencing during perimenopause, such as wheezing, coughing, cold-like symptoms, sinus problems, sinus headaches, post nasal drip, migraine headaches and even benign epidodes of shortness of breath can all be connected to fluctuating hormone / histamine levels.

The two are unmitigatedly connected.

However, if there is any symptom of this nature you are experiencing, Power Surge recommends being checked out by your healthcare practitioner before *assuming* that what you're experiencing is due to menopause. Best to be on the safe side and eliminate any other problems that might exist.

thank you dearest for reminding us of that. & i'd like to use this opportunity to thank all those doctors who made fun of me, blew me off, told me i was crazy, etc when i asked about the link between hormones & sinus/ear/respiratory problems & allergies. i especially would like to thank this summer's top doctor (yes- she was voted one of the state's top doctors) & expert in menopause & WHI whatchmicallit -bad day today) for not only telling me that i was too young to be perimenopausal (hence my pmdd dx - she didn't even do the intake), but for going on a tirade when i asked about this other stuff. she was soooooooo mad & sooooooo tired of people blaming hormones for everything. when i tried to point out that women have problems with things like rhinitis during pregnancy she told me that was purely due to the amazingly high hormonal level. at that point, presumably knowing that she was dealing with a dunce, she stormed out of the room.

fond memories...stuffy head still

Ellen, the one you describe is definitely a contender for the Moronic Doctor of the Month Award. Maybe we can send her a plaque of the Hippocratic Oath with an enormous crack down the middle. I'll even chip in.
