My sister is scheduled for a surgical procedure on the 24th.  She is 50 years old and 14 months postmenopausal.

Around two months ago she had a terrible episode during which she bled and cramped horribly for almost a month.  She was seen by her MD & a GYN at that time and tests were scheduled. She came back negative for endrometreosis, but what was found were a small uterine fibroid and a very large ovarian cyst that had completely enveloped her right ovary.

She has been told by three different doctors now that the ovary must come out, and has been given the recommendation by two to have a complete hysterectomy at the same time.  She wants to be as conservative as possible, and the doctor doing the surgery has said she would go with her wishes, but two of the doctors (including the surgeon) have also told her that it's all going to have to come out at some point anyway, if not now, later. ( We do have a family history of nasty uterine fibroids and benign ovarian tumors.)  The doctors have also told her they are very worried about another bleeding episode that could be worse then the first one.  (What caused the episode has not really been determined.)

She is very confused at this point -- she's been reading as much as she can but is very anxious that she make the right choice.

As it stands now, the doctor will be going in to only take the effected ovary -- knowing that my sister is wanting to be conservative about this, IF she finds something that leads her to believe the uterus and other ovary simply must be removed at that time she has the go ahead.

My sister is visiting me and has been experiencing continued cramping, though no bleeding.

What are your thoughts on how she is handling this and what she might benefit best from?

Many thanks!

That is a hard one!  I don't think any of us can make that decision for another.  Research the options and possible results, and, if you believe in prayer, pray, is all I could say!  There are positives and negatives both ways.
