I am with you sister -except I am too old to be pregnant so I just look like a basketball is under my shirt and I hate the fact that I can't even hold it in! I used to have stomach muscles but I am not sure where they went, somewhere South!

Sorry Shirl... you are going to HATE this (cover your ears now)
You should not be "covering it up" you should be dealing with it... "fat around the middle" is dangerous to your health.
and gives you a greater chance of diabetes and heart disease.......
Unfortunately a healthy diet and that dreaded word exercise are the answer!!
Yes I know you didn't want to hear that!

oh, i related to this one bigtime... i was out xmas shopping last year, it was about a week to xmas day... one sales lady in a shop asked me if i was hoping for a xmas baby!!!! my husband got me out of the shop fast, after just saying no to the woman.. i cried. i cried all the way home. i cried for days......

then i threw out all the 'bad' food in the house, started walking, joined the local gym, and i've never looked back! i've lost 14 kilos this year with diet and exercise.. i still have some of that belly, but it won't be there for too much longer.

sadly, the belly seems to be the first place a woman notices weight gain, and it is the very last place we lose weight from! (according to my gym guy) it is smaller tho, i can fit into pants i hadn't worn in a couple of years now.

Zen and Lindy speak the truth. There is no way to "spot reduce" any part of your body. Doing 1,000 crunches or sit ups every will not shrink your belly either.

Diet is the first thing you should change.
And that's right, throw out all the junk and processed foods in your kitchen.
Eat 5 to 6 small, healthy meals a day.
Eat lean protein at each of these meals.

Then, add in exercise.
You need both resistance (weight lifting) and cardio exercise.
You need cardio to burn calories and lose weight.
You need resistance or weight bearing exercise to change the shape of your body.

There is no need for any woman to look pregnant, unless she IS pregnant.
It takes some work, but isn't your health worth it?

Armadillo:

I am recovering from some pretty major adrenal fatigue issues, combined with terrible anxiety, panic, agoraphobia....consequently I have pretty much been sitting on my butt for the last 3 months. I lost 20 pounds due to being unable to eat because of the above. So now I am on a quest to maintain the weight loss and firm up the flaccid body.

So, if you feel like answering....I have a couple of questions for you...I know you are kind of an exercise guru!!

I am walking on a treadmill (it is too cold and snowy here to walk outside) for 30 minutes each day. I have noticed a huge improvement in my legs after less than a week.

Can I add ankle weights? Would that be classed as resistance? What about holding little weights in my hands while I am walking?

I am not ready just yet to do more than the 30 minutes on the treadmill, but would like to make that time as effective as possible. Maybe when I regain a little more strength and energy I can add more!!

Thanks in advance for your reply!

I also do the treadmill about 30-40 minutes a day and I am working at a really fast pace. Well, somedays I am slower but I make sure I do it every day. I used to wear those little weights around my ankles and I lost the feeling in my left knee. My chiropractor said those weights shouldn't be worn when you walk but only when you lay on the floor and do weight lifting etc. I have also started Yoga and really like it. I do that about 30 minutes 3 times a week.

Sorry to say, I eat healthy and work out but I still have a small belly. I have had three surgeries (in my stomach area) and am wondering if I can ever really flatten it again like it used to be before all the surgeries.

I joined last year to ask about stomach camouflage. I've always been skinny, and now I have thin legs, arms, and face all attached to a round--but not fat--middle. I feel as if I'm built like a spider. I get a monstrous amount of exercise from a gardening addiction, sports, and library fact-checking work, and I've always eaten well. So I don't think lack of exercise is the point. It seems as if the thread is veering into gym-guilt, but I see a lot of women around who are clearly fit, but still have the stomach.

I've said goodbye to tucked in shirts and belted slacks, and now I'm going for a slacks or skirt look with tops that have some sort of a tailored finish out over the waistband. Do any of you have ideas on whether one should follow major fashion changes, or establish a cut that works and stick with it? My inclination now is to spend the next thirty or so years looking crisp and ignoring fads.

If anyone has specific advice on cuts that cover the stomach but still look trim, I would appreciate it.

Ladies we are meant to have tummies! Our natural shape is a rounded tummy. It is only the anorexic skinny models and celebrities who spend hours with a personal trainer who make us feel that we should be board flat!
There is a big difference between a pleasantly rounded tummy and the dangerous "fat around the middle" that can affect health.
If you have a feminine rounded tummy celebrate it!
If you have a fat belly.. do something about it!!!

Ps I have the fat belly which crept up on me.... but it is going!!! LOL

And God grant me the wisdom to know the difference!
