Hey Girls:
I love this particular forum. Getting lots of tips on makeup, hair colour, hair length, etc. So lets talk clothes! Lets face it, most of us love clothes!
I have two wardrobes, one for work and one for home. My work wardrobe is modern classic it would say....I stick to what works for years at a stretch, although I do change up the slacks as syles change, and the length of the jackets, etc.
My home wardrobe is mostly jeans....I was so excited when high heels with jeans became stylish again!! I love the heels, and missed them a lot when the big clunky shoes were in style.
I lost weight recently and can now wear some of the more trendy looks....the smock like shirts that are long....love them....but I don't have the big belly anymore. I don't expect the weight to stay off, as it was anxiety that caused the loss...not diet and exercise! Ya, like I am that self disciplined!! NOT!!
So share your style! What style of jeans to you like the best? Are you gonna try the "not so new" skinny jeans? (I wore them back in the 80s!!) Where is your favourite place to buy clothes?
And what about shoes?? I have lots of shoes, love the shoes...black ones, brown ones, red ones, leopard print ones, white ones, cream ones....anyone else love the shoes?? The most comfortable high heeled shoes I have found are Aerosoles and I buy them online...just about every pair of my shoes are Aerosoles. They can be expensive, but if you wait for their sales, you can pick them up for $30 or $40!
So girls, lets talk clothes!!

I am now, and have always been a jeans person. I particularly like the jeans that sit about an inch below the belly button. I can't stand anything too high. I like a slight flair to the botton of my jeans, my daughter once said wearing pants with the legs too tight makes a woman my age look 'old'. I listened. I love button up the front shirts with long sleeves that I roll halfway up the arm, and in the cold months with a turtleneck underneath. I also love sweatshirts. When I do have to dress up which is normally only for church or to go out occasionally, I wear slacks with a sweater or loose top. My footwear consists of either New Balance sneakers, LL Bean slip on mocs, or black casuals. My favorite brands are Levi, Lee and Calvin Klein. I have always been pretty much the tomboy type so my wardrobe consists mainly of the above. In the summer months it's capris and t-shirts. Thankfully my job doesn't force me to wear dressy clothes so I am comfortable in my clothing just about all the time. Oh yea, at night it's footed jammies until I go to sleep then OFF with anything that touches my skin!!!
HUGS!

Right now I am wearing CK jeans and wearing them to death! I also like Gap jeans. I work in healthcare so my work wardrobe consists of fugly scrubs

so I do like to dress up when we go out. I also like the yoga pants from Victoria's Secret. Shoes? Moi?

when I was dating my man - the first time he came to my apartment and saw all of the shoes laying around, he said "I thought you lived alone?"

My wardrobe is best described as "institutional."
On most days, it's just a hospital gown.
On Saturday nights, I dress it up with a green robe and bunny slippers.

I have to say my wardrobe is a mixture of Classic/Funky/Frumpy. For work, I dress classically...black dress pants, black blazers, high heel black pumps, and a variety of brightly colored blouses. When I go out at night (which is never these days) I let the 'real me' out; big, flowing skirts, funky loose-fitting jackets with wild designs, huge earrings, etc. And when I'm home relaxing, it's my 'play clothes', which, if I'm going to be completely honest here, are frump-city. Old, worn out sweat pants, big men's shirts (usually flannel), heavy socks and bunny slippers (we all seem to have a pair of bunny slippers!) In the summer, at 5:00 pm I wear a giant T-shirt and nothing else.
At the end of the workday, my husband and I can't wait to rip off the work clothes (he assists in this process occasionally....

) and jump into the comfy stuff. I've been thinking that maybe I should get some attractive sleepwear; you know, pajama's that are really pajama's....bottoms and tops that match, etc.
One of my favorite re-run shows is The Golden Girls. I love watching Blanche's night-time apparel. My goodness---the beautiful, multi-colored silk bathrobes...does anyone really wear this stuff at home?

I have to add one thing: I love to wear clothes from Chico's. Thank GOD for Chico's. Elastic waist bands are my friend!!! They're pricey, but I'm a passport member and I only buy stuff on sale..

In the winter time, I am a jeans and boots kind of gal! I like the lowrise jeans (not too low!) that are boot cut. My favorite brands are Levis, GAP Long and Lean, and Lucky jeans. I usually wear turtlenecks or button collar shirts with scarf, eithor trenchcoat or leather jacket, and I'm ready to go. For the holiday parties this year, it's wrap dresses (in red or black) with my pointy, knee high, boots.
In the summer, I'm in tanktops with short or skirts and that's it. If we're going out at night, it's skirt with a halter top or a halter dress (it's hot out here, I have to dress light!). It's flip flops all summer long.
I also really like sweater coats in the winter time, I think they look classy (I get mine through Victoria's Secret). I think a dark pair of nice jeans, a white collar shirt with french cuffs, a pair of black boots, and a nice jacket are essentials

Well, that's my two cents worth!

Oooh clothes.....
When I teach my Confidence and 50+ courses we do a quiz about Style Personality.
Basically we are one of 6 "types"
Creative (like to be different)
Dramatic (like to be noticed)
Romantic (love dressing up and pretty things)
Classic (formal timeless clothes)
Natural (Like your clothes to be comfortable)
City Chic (like to follow trends)
Or a combination of more than one .... like me
I am "Romantic" and "Natural"
Unfortunately the two really don't mix....
It explained why I always had clothes in my wardrobe that I never wore... mI ahd been buying pretty clothes taht I loved.... but they were uncomfortable so I hardly wore the,
I solved the problem by always wearing trousers or jeans and flattish shoes... but dressing up with pretty accessories and wearing velvet a lot to satisfy my "romantic" streak!!!
Mind you at this moment I am in my Gym clothes which are definitely not Romntic.... even if the jog pants are velvet!!!!

What a GREAT class that you teach! That must be so interesting

Okay, I'm the bottom three.......Classic, Natural, and City Chic
I recently purchased a pair of shoes at Naturalizer. They feel like slippers, the most comfortable shoes I have ever owned. They are not too attractive, but oh my, I can walk for miles and miles in those shoes! What's ironic about that......I remember growing-up and wondering why my mother wore less than attractive shoes at times. She used to tell me it's all about comfort! I promised myself that no matter how uncomfortable something felt, if it looked good, I would wear it! I was never going to fall into that trap of wanting to feel "comfortable", and possibly forgoing style for it. Guess what? I have fallen, BIG time!
Hugs,
Karen

Kathie.... I can see you are feeling much better...........getting excited about clothes again!
What we choose to wear is really interesting.. you can tell so much about someone just by looking at the way they dress... My 2 daughters are so different in the way they dress. The older one at 31 still wears very young trendy casual clothes (you know the ones... they look like they have been washed 50 times and then beaten!!) The younger one at 29 wears more grown up classic stylish clothes and accessorises well. They both look fab in their own way as their own style suits them.
For a laugh... I am old enough at 53 to have worn the late 60s/70s clothes (you young 40 year old spring chickens won't remember this). Really really short skirts.. even in the depths of winter (chapped legs) and big clumpy platform shoes. I even had matching knickers to the skirts they were so short!!
Oh I loved my first flared trousers for my 16th birthday (pants)... I felt soooooo trendy!!
I too have lost some weight (not intentionally... food intolerance problems) but am looking at clothes with much more interest again.. roll on summer!

PS I must stop writing on these posts and get some work done.. where did that self discipline I said I had go to ?!!!

I only wear Levi's 517 boot cut jeans. Preferably the old ones with the orange tag. I can find them on eBay. With these I wear short-sleeved t-shirts. My arms are too long for the long-sleeved shirts to fit-besides I live in the sun-belt--so not much need to try to keep warm most of the time. I don't offer free advertising on my t-shirts anymore--I usually buy Northern Reflections shirts but not the ones with pictures on them. I only wear vanity fair underpants--and just recently found some bras that fit. (When I get measured, I take a 38A--that doesn't exist. I'm big around but not well endowed.) I also wear Wigwam wool socks because they are cush. I prefer Bass loafers--tassel or penny--but my last pair wore out and we haven't been able to get to a store for more--so I'm wearing some old lady walking shoes that tie up that I got out of a catalog. We don't go out. I have one dress that I bought for my Dad's funeral in 2000--it's too big now. I never wore high heels--did wear some low heels. I am tallish and when I was active socially, I hated being taller than my date. When I taught high school I wore comfortable shoes--like earth shoes--because I stood most of the day. When I ran a record store I wore athletic shoes because the store had been an old A&P and I had a lot of area to cover. So, high heels never figured in my life. When I look at my Mom's feet--who wore high heels--I'm glad I was steered by fate away from them. Yes, I am "foot proud" and regularly give my toe nails a French manicure. No one sees them but me--but that's what counts.

I like having secrets no one would guess--like that my feet look so good under the wool socks--or that I have Vanity Fair underwear under my jeans. That may be weird--but that's me.

Yeah-I'm a real fashion maven.

OH what a fun thread. I have enjoyed reading aoub everyone's wardrobes. I absolutely love Land's End clothes. They are comfy and casual. Since I work at home, I can wear anything I want but I do dress like I am going to work. This way it makes it feel more like work. I think most of my clothes are Land's end from shoes, to shorts, pant shirts etc. I love Victoria's secret underware. The cotton panties as they last a nice long time and are comfy. I also have a weakness for Bambi clothes. I love that movie but good clothes of Bambi are hard to find. At night, I have Bambi jammies. OK, I said it.

I feel a little like "Sybil" when it comes to my wardrobe lately. I go from spikey heels with professional suiting by day to Levis and cowboy boots, tennies and jogging suits, shorts and tees (well not now that its FREEZING!) for all the other days. Alas, I have lost the me I knew and loved to dress... I'm 25 pounds heavier, nothing fits right and I don't like any of the new styles on me. Shopping for work clothes now is a chore, and generally quite depressing. I want to cry when I find something cute. Course, it doesn't take much to turn on the tears these days. Was one to always sport a new dress or skirt. No more. Just not comfortable. Comfort has become the operative word. And, yes... stretch top pants are my newest and best friends too. Oh, but shoes... The shoes... I have some really pretty shoes. But, isn't hard to find a handbag???

OK -
I work in a really uptight business so I have to be conservative but the artsy me is always dying to get out. So I usually wear a suit (Ann Taylor or on sale from a rack @ TJ MAXX or Marshalls) - and try to "funk" it up with a cool tee or button down from, let's say... H&M (my fav for almost "disposable" trendy things) or Target's Mizrahi line. ( Target addict am I) In the winter I'm a boots girl for business or casual and never wear a really high or thin heel because I feel disabled by the end of the day. In the summer for work I like open toe shoes (or a conservative/interesting sandal) with a good pedicure color like Vamp (dark dark eggplant) or Ballerina (sheer pink). Shoes are hard for me because I am a size 11 and many shoes are not even available in that size. For sisters with this problem Nordstrom Rack (the mark-down Nordstrom store) is a good resource. Toes can be sexy. LOL!
For me a really good haircut is essential to any look and because I have amazingly strange cowlicks and wavy hair I keep my hair short so as to diminish the possibility of really bad hair days. Also a bit fanatic about the right shade of lipstick because aside from a little blush and undereye concealer that's the only make up I wear and favor the brownish/nude shades.
Love funky handbags - currently I'm into big bags in amorphous shapes or fake Hermes looking boxy type bags. (The better to hold all my meds while waiting for anxiety attack!

)
For weekends and very occasional nights out - I'M A LEVIS WOMAN! I like tee shirts ( and for winter short sleeve over long sleeve).
For the ultimate in comfort and hangin' I favor sweatpants - the bigger the better and soft soft soft cotton anything on top.
This board feels like a guilty pleasure - if I'm even responding to this I guess the AD's must have kicked in - Hmmmmm!
Love all you ladies.

I can't find a good handbag that lasts. Anyone have suggestions? I bought an all leather bag from the Daisy Fuentes line---it cost me sixty dollars and it fell apart in 2 weeks. I'm the first to admit I beat up my handbags...but can't I find one that the straps won't fall off it without spending $300?
I really want a Brighton bag, but they are so expensive, and I'm afriad I'll splurge and it will fall apart...

Floater...I can beat that! I bought my favorite purse from the local carwash, they have a tiny boutique inside. It cost $40.00, it has lasted longer than any expensive purse I have bought, and I just love it!
I think WalMart, Target, Mervyn's and JCPenney are great places to buy purses. I will never spend a lot of money on a purse again, it just doesn't make much sense (especially being on a budget!).

Not laughing at all Kathie...
I got my brown leather bag (you call them purses.. to us in UK a purse is what you keep your coins in lol) from the local street market.
I searched high and low in the shops... at all the expensive ones and couldn't find one that was right (I like lots of pockets and it must have a shoulder strap as I cycle a lot).
I finally found one on the street market, much much cheaper than the shop ones and it is just as good!!
I love bargains.....
In case you don't realise a lot of the expensive stuff is made in the same factories as the cheaper stuff.
I bought a reduced "sample" cardi from a Boden Sale, the actual cardis are £79 in their current catalogue. When i got it home I found the buttons had "cherokee" on them... (Cherokee is Tesco supermarket brand). Obviously the factory when making the sample only had Cherokee buttons available so used them. It showed me that the same factory made both Boden and and Supermarket brands!
Expensive isn't necessarily better.

I can totally relate - my coolest bag is from the k-mart mark down aisle. I bought it about 3 years ago on a business trip. When I have down time in some city or suburb I've never been in during a business trip I always bargian shop or look for second hand stores (thrift shops) - another thing I love. Anyway it's a suede bag, flat as a pancake (a bit impractical since I carry a bargeful of stuff everyday but great for special occasions) , black and embossed with some interesting pattern. It has fringes of suede that hang down and a lacquer red chinese type medallion that fastens it closed and a shoulder strap. Too cool for school!!! - I think it was 12 bucks, if that much!
Prada, Gucci, blah, blah, blah - cool is cool no matter what it costs and if it has BAMBI on it (a shout out to Mopsy!) all the better. (But I am partial to Thumper, Mops)

Okay...another "don't laugh!"...my oldest daughter bought a pair of boots from a second hand store, but they had never been worn, you could tell....they ended up not fitting her so I bought them off her....they cost a grand total of $8!!!!
I wore them for two winters!! They are leather, maroon in colour...slight western style about them...look great with jeans and dress pants, and have medium heels!! This year I have suede boots from Aerosoles, got them in the spring on sale for $40.....high heels of course....and I adore them!!

I've never really been one for "designer" stuff as far as purses go, but my son bought me a Coach for Christmas last year and then a Kate Spade for my b-day and honestly, the quality is outstanding on both. In Chicago area there are a couple of Coach outlet stores, and I think the outlet mall in Aurora also has Kate Spade.

love love love baby fur and boucle knit sweaters and turtle necks.

Ooh..I live by the sea so most clothes are for strolling about and my wardrobe is no longer smart as it was when I was still teaching ! I wear..jeans, white jeans, black leggings or skirt and tops, black leather jacket, kitten heels in black, long boots, white, navy, blue or black tops, uh...what else. Black, white or blue for dresses. Some Stevie Nicks type skirts, shawls and white petticoats.( Yes.I know, but I live in Wales...so the weird witchy look is OK..) A few smart dresses and big hats eg for garden parties at Buckingham Palace ..went twice so had to spruce up..um.. and haven't worn them since..One black trouser suit and one very hot black skirt suit to wear with high heels in case I want male attention so that doesn't get worn much these days because I'd rather have peace and quiet frankly. All in all, it all looks like a cross between a child's dressing up box and someone's granny's hippie clothes. I might get a sari, next. I don't wear mini skirts now, though.too, sad. ( gave them up when I was 50.

.) Also still have some Star Trek costumes 'cos a bunch of us used to go for laughs and to buy books etc. So there's the 'Wrath of Khan' costume copy, a Roman slave girl's short dress, the copy of Kim Basinger's long cream dress from the Batman film for when eight of us went as ' Gone With The Wind' characters and the outfit made of three scarves and some John lennon glasses for a Hippie disco. Elegant, eh ?

I am a fashion disaster. For as long as I can remember, I have worn jeans and T-shirts (at work it's slacks and loose shirts or sweaters) and my hair in a ponytail. I buy for comfort, not fashion. Reason? I hate to be the downer of the group, but as much as I would like to look nice and pretty and sexy...I HATE CLOTHES SHOPPING!!! I don't mind housewares shopping or grocery shopping, but clothes shopping drives me nuts.
I'm hard to fit because I've always had narrow hips and a big tummy, big boobs and football player shoulders, and wide feet. Every trip to the store ends up with me wanting to take an ax to every woman under a size 10. I can't buy sets -- suits and so forth -- because I'm two sizes bigger on the top than the bottom. My wide shoulders and large breasts make all the sleeves of shirts too short, and all the buttons gap. I've tried shopping at the plus-size stores, but all the shirts bell out on the bottom because most larger woman have wider hips. Plus -- for some reason I can't fathom -- many of their clothes have HORIZONTAL STRIPES!!! Who thought THAT was a good idea?!?! The jeans and slacks never fit right because if I get a pair to fit my belly, the legs are too baggy and the crotch too low. If I get something to fit my legs and hips, the waist is too tight. Most better stores (Macy's, Dillard's, etc.) don't carry wide shoes, so I end up buying junk that doesn't last at one of the big box discount stores.
And all this type of problem happened when I wasn't overweight too. I'm just dealing with it on a larger scale now. If anyone has any ideas to help me, or even can relate, I'm here to listen.

hey Web! I know what you are going thru, I have always been bigger on top that the bottom, and dresses have never worked for me, and suits don't usually either, it is seperates all the way.
I did want to say, I found some dressy type pants that are made of stretchy material and don't have a waist band or a zipper, but a really wide panel so if your hips are small, they really work well. AND the new style of tops works well for me. They are snug and fitted around the chest, usually have ties and hang loose from there. If you look for one that is slightly shaped...coming in towards waist and flaring out at hips, it gives the illusion of an hourglass figure. They can also help hide tummy's, besides if the top is fitted....who is gonna look at the tummy anyway!!!
Also, if you are built like me...which is sounds like you are...there are some rules we are supposed to follow....like not wearing tight legged pants, it makes you appear unbalanced...too top heavy. And if you are lacking booty, which lord knows I am....you can wear pants with back pocket flaps, it adds to the illusions of booty! Also, don't be afraid to alter your shirts, I have to do it all the time...if I want them to fit shoulders and chest...the waist and hips are enormous on me!! HAHA!!!!

I am a real mixup of how I dress.
To go to the mall would be jeans or striaght jeans skirt, a camisole and a smartish, yet sporty jacket. To go out taking photographs and having fun in a casual setting, well.....I am a bit bohemian, and love longish skirts which are definately spanish-type things, topped with a camisole or cool blouse. To go out to dinner I am always little black dress, earings, red lippy, hair up, and voila.....I am done. Work meetings....business suit.
Sitting chatting on PS or MSN......not telling!

Sounds like you've got my build. I'm not REALLY complaining, because when I'm at a good weight I actually look pretty good. But like I said, buying clothes is a pain. I do have a decent behind now, but it used to be flat. I started walking for exercise a few years ago and working those glute muscles really helped it fill out nicely. I'll try some of your suggestions. Thanks for the comments....oh, and don't you know there are women reading this and screaming "HOW DARE YOU complain about not having hips?!?!?!" I guess whatever we have we want something else, and then someone else wants what we have. I have wavy hair too (another pain). But I learned to live with it when a stylist told me "Do you have any idea how much money women pay to get hair just like yours?" Crazy.

I am a second hand clothes junky and love the twenties.
I mix them with modern day stuff and try to give things a unique twist.
I wore jeans under dresses years ago. to hide my legs but still be able to wear a frock and now am gutted that everyone seems to be doing it now!
I think I have toned it down as the years go by, in my twenties I remember overharing some boys at work talking about me, saying I was quite attractive but just dressed so weird. I remember thinking then I did not care, but I think I did. That day I had a 1950's suit on from a second hand shop and it had cost me £50 which was lot then.
I rue the day that everyone started looking casual, I would love to be in hats and gloves era but with todays comfy foundation wear!

I'm another fashion disaster! It didn't use to be this way. When I was a simple office girl I could wear the dresses, suits, heels and I had a mix of styles from chick suits to the flowing romantic but now... I never know if I'm going to be crawling around on the floor fixing network wires or sitting at the desk writing programs so I tend to dress more casual yet I've never been able to carry off the casual look. I tend to come across looking dumpy and frumpy and totally unkempt. Plus.. I get in a rut.. most all of my pants are black, (either capris or Dockers) and because they always have the A/C on, I've got the layered look.
Something else I could use help on is some non-flippy shoes for capris? Any ideas? I have looked high and low and can't seem to find any shoes that I like with capris other than flip flops and I hate flipping and flopping around the office. (it drives everyone else crazy too.)

Hi Carol. You could always go for the ballerina style flats with your capri's for work. Lot's of color choices and fabrics to choose from too. Also you could go with a sandal type shoe with a very modest dressy heel.

I like to wear whatever i'm comfortable in.....and my motto has always been "it's not what you wear,it's HOW you wear it".....i feel most comfortable in jeans and a shirt .....i just love the cotton/spandex shirts because they are more clingy and give me a better looking shape(never low-cut shirts though).I like to shop where the good deals are,i don't care about the name brands or what's in style.....so i mostly shop in second-hand stores and i LOVE to garage-sale.I always thought i dressed kinda classy....but i went to work one day to pick up my check (didn't have my work uniform on)and the women there said i looked like a hippie......at first it bothered me but then i thought, well, that's just ME......maybe i am a bit hippie-ish with the beads and stuff....
I also LOVE purses of any kind, but ONLY black ones.I never clean mine out, instead i get a different one and then about once a year i give away about 30- 50 of them.....
As far as under garments.....i'm simple,i wear fruit of the loom low rise briefs.....they're comfortable.I still haven't found a comfortable yet supportive bra that will hold up the 36 D's......

Thanks Coastergirl, I've tried the ballerina flats but they make my feet look fat.:-) They look so good on everyone else though, I really wish I could wear them. I've been tempted to get a pair anyway just to see if they will grow on me. I may even do that tomorrow.

LMBO....do I know what you mean. I have short, wide feet too! Kinda like I have a matching pair of Dairy Queen banana split boats.

Probably why I still wear stiletto's. They make my feet look more slender. And since I'm only 5'3".....they add alot of height too.

Welll I sure hope we aren't counting what we wear while slumming around the house!! I am currently wearing a pair of flannel pajama bottoms, baby blue with pick and purple flowers, some purple ankle socks, a black cammie and a cream coloured sweater!!! haha!! Now I am a CLASS ACT!!! It is so cold here, on this July day, that this amount of clothing is appropriate!!!
I would never ever step foot outside lookin like this, and if anybody shows up at the door, I will make a run for the bedroom! But man, I am SOOOO comfy!!

Bet you look really "Glam" Float!
Its cold here too....I have had my heating on a couple of morning recently .. in JULY!
I went shopping for cardigans today as all of mine are two sizes too big now.. guess what I couldn't find any.. I think everyone else had bought them!
I have finally decided I am going to start wearing "grown up" clothes.. at the ripe old age of 54 I have finally decided that my "Casual Collegey" look really isn't appropriate any more.. I occasionally catch sight of myself in a shop window and I guess I would like the image I see to look more sophisticated.
So it will be All Change when I buy my Winter Wardrobe in the Autumn.. all of last winters clothes are too big now.
(For anyone who doesn't know me I have had food intolerance problems which although have been awful.. the good part is that I have lost 2 stone and dropped two dress sizes ..)
HUGS Lindy xx
