For the last couple of weeks I've been trying to find a bp medication that work. I can not use ACE Inhibitors (Lisinopril) because I had an allergic reaction. I'm so sensitive to medication so my doctor and I are experimenting with various dosage and brands. I just want something that works without causing excessive dizziness.

Ladies, do you have any suggestions? Thanks for your help.

I was on a diretic for PMS at one time. I hadn't realized it was for blood pressure at the time but I had an allergic reaction to it. I am very med sensitve too.. Can your doctor give you samples of BP medication to see what one would work?

Faith:

I am taking ToprolXL 50 mg. It seems to work well for me. The only time I have experienced any dizziness with this drug is lately since I have been exercising I have noticed I get a little dizzy when I get up to fast out of bed.

I am very hopeful that come January when I return to my doc that he will take me off of bp meds.

I don't know if this is an ACE inhibitor, but my husband takes Diovan and has no problems at all.

My partner has high BP, last time he had a check up a year ago his BP was 170/100. A few months ago (maybe 3) I started him on BP Essentials...which are an herbal supplement...google it for more into....his BP at the doctor's last week was 127/83. Huge improvement!!

My doc just switched me from Toprol (also tried Lisinopril - both made me dizzy) to Coreg. Not sure if it's an ACE or not - just know that after a few days of a slight headache, I feel great and it has brought my b/p down significantly.

Good luck finding something that works for you!

I take Benicar HCT. No side effects at and also has a small amount of a diurectic. Been taking it for 2 years now.

I started taking BP medication about 10 years ago. My doctor started me on a calcium channel blocker, but it did not help much. I have been on Metopropol 100 mg with good results since then. I also take a diuretic which I began using when my carpal tunnel syndrome was first diagnosed 4 years ago. I had surgery 2 years ago for the bilateral carpal tunnel issues, but still take the diuretic. Between the two, my blood pressure seems well-controlled. Sometimes it takes some tweaking to find the right medication for hypertension.
TidalWaves
I just started 5 mg. Bystolic. BP went from 189/96 to 116/75.

I had a huge problem with lethargy, but seems to be much better now.

I've been on Metoprolol and a diuretic for over two years--these seem to work for me. My BP always ran high, but this seems to pull it down enough so my doctor is satisfied.

My sister has been on Attenenol for years . . . .

Good luck!

My doctor just upped my BP meds because she didnt think it was under control enough....I am taking Atacand 16mg. with 5 mg. of Altace... Does anyone take these? I have been on Atacand for maybe 5 years...but started at 8 mg. she now has me on 32mg. must tell you that this Dr. is a replacement because my original is on maternity leave....

Since doubling I find I am a little light headed, and my heart feels like it is beating a little fast at times, not always, but feel tired more so than usual....by the way most of my readings were about 137/85, not in the office, but at home....when I was in the office it was usually 150/90....
She wants me to try it for 2 weeks then go get blood work....What will blood work tell? confused.....I hate messing with meds........... unsure.gif

MYfaith: My knowledge of pharmaceutics is over 25 years old, but I'll give you my best 2 cents here....

ACE inhibitors work very well on lowering blood pressure; they stop the enzyme responsible for the narrowing of vessels. Unfortunately, they are not well tolerated by some people. What was your allergic reaction? If dizziness was the only one, it's possible it would get better with time. Worse are people who experience renal dysnfuntion (ie kidney problems) with these drugs (anything with a "pril" on the end is a type of ACE inhibitor.)

You could try duriectics, or beta blockers, or a combo. Have you attempted to lower your blood pressure with exercise and diet changes? I had a cousin who was on three different BP meds, and she still had dangerously high readings sometime. She joined a gym, lost 60 lbs and was able to go off all the meds completely. Of course, I'm not saying that this is the situation with you...some people just have essential hypertension and no matter how healthy they try to be, their blood pressure will always be high (my mother is a perfect example...she's 5 foot 3, weight 118 lbs, teaches tai chi, water aerobics, and at 70 years old has a better body than I do...and yet, she has high blood pressure---sometimes you just can't fight genetics.) There are some excellent studies which show a correlation between consumption of whole brown rice (the kind you have to cook for a long time) and lowered blood pressure. And of course, the American diet is high in salt, which leads to water retention, which can cause high bp.

Hope I helped some...afraid I probably didn't...I'm headed down the path to bp meds myself. It's been creeping up slowly over the years, despite my best attempts to live a healthy lifestyle. All four grandparents, both my parents, all my aunts and uncles, and half my cousins are on bp meds. I hope you find something that works...

Robin, thanks for this information. It has been helpful.

I was taking Lisinopril and work up early one morning with my entire face swollen. A trip to the emergency room revealed that I was having a reaction to the Lisinopril after taking it for a month or a little longer.

I was using a diuretic, but then my glucose level began to rise. After being off the diuretic for less than a month my fasting glucose level has been between 88-94.

You are right about me losing weight to lower my blood pressure and help with my osteoarthritis. I have read and heard about other people who were able to stop taking medication for diabetes and high bp by changing their diet and losing weight. Genetic sure does play a part in this. A good friend has been on bp medication since her 20's and she is tall and thin. The only time she was probably over weight was during her 3 pregnancies.

So now I'm taking two blood pressure medications, but I'm really hoping to shed ALL these perimenopausal pounds and get off these medications.

MyFaith: Yeah, the diurectics can wreak havoc with your blood sugar levels...I wonder why...gotta research that one.

Sounds like you had a pretty dramatic reaction to the lisonopril. I'm sure you doctor will get you on the right meds....hypertension is more the norm than the exception these days. We're such a stressed out country. Wish I could whisk us all away to a tropical island!

Hi, I just contacted the doctors office to say I have not been feeling the greatest since she doubled my dose of BP, Atacand She was out, but another doctor suggested I go back to my original dosage........I figured that in my opinion it was a big jump to 2X the amount, but hey who am I, but I guess I was right to feel that way,,,,,I think Atacand is in the ACE inhibitor family as well, got to check this one out............
