When I was in my early 40's which looking back now I can see was early peri for me, I went through a several year period where I would get overheated and sweat and not be able to cool down, but it was always due to overexertion or being in a super hot or super hot and humid place. (For example, one time I was walking super fast through an airport to catch a connecting flight, the airport was very warm and it was a rainy day.) I've always been heat intolerant, and because I was still menstruating regularly and knew nothing about perimenopause, I just chalked it up to my body not being able to tolerate heat, even though it was much worse then than at any prior time in my life.

Fast forward to Jan 2007, my cycles had been irregular for 8 or 9 months, and one evening while sitting in bed watching TV suddenly I had what I am 100% certain is a hot flash. The room was cool and I was doing nothing to exert myself. I had near-continuous flashes for 9 days. Fortunately I have had none since then, though I have had what I call "warm spells", nothing like the hot flashes but I have no doubt they are caused by roller coaster hormones. I suspect I am in late peri now.

I'm thinking that the early overheating was actually hot flashes, but they were expressed in a different form.

Has anyone else experienced the not-quite-a-flash overheating thing ?

Sandra,

When I get what I think is a "hot flash", my face suddenly feels like it's getting too warm and I'm sure it turns red. I have only had a couple of hot flashes where I actually felt overheated and got sweaty. I think you're right that there are different forms of hot flashes and I'm sure it depends on whatever the hormones are doing at any particular moment.

(Isn't this trip down meno-lane a real blast? NOT!!!!!)

Take care,

When I first starting having hot flashes, I thought I was in a place that was too warm, or I was overdressed. After this was going on for awhile I started asking people if it was "hot in here?" and they always said NO!! Then I realized these were hot flashes. I went from having a flash from time to time, to everyday, to several times a day....in summer during a heat wave I couldn't tell if it was the extreme heat or a hot flash, but it was very unpleasant. Now I can go days without having one again. I am 8 months with no period. The cold flashes are way worse!!

Hugs

Kathie
