I have seen the shows on the HISTORY channel about the prophecies of doomsday and it really has been on my mind alot lately. Has anyone else seen it? and what do you think about it? I dont know about anyone else but im really confused about these things. i have always believed in God , but recently i have really been struggling with what i believe anymore. im confused about the science approach and the ancient prophets and the bible. i dont belong to a church but i was raised pretty much baptist.
im afraid because IF these prophets are right, then we only have 5 more years left.
you know how we all have our health anxiety and we can play out a whole movie in our heads about having something terribly wrong with us and going to the hospital and everything going wrong and then dying a scary, painful death, or finding out we're really dying and having to say goodbye to our kids.... well i keep doing the same thing about these prophecies and the exact date they predict and what might happen and if im going to see my kids die or they might see me die and what they will go thru.
im starting to cry again now just talking about it. and what about all my plans for my life after im finally over this meno stuff? i was planning to be happy again and enjoy my life and do things ive been waiting my whole life to do, when i'll finally be able to HAVE a life of my own. and what about my kids future? they dont even have one if this is true. it kills me to think of this.
id really appreciate some feedback on this. i need some peace of mind.

Sudio:
I honestly do not give this whole prophecy thing a lot of thought. Perhaps I should, but why torture myself over it. What will be will be. We should all just try to live each day to the fullest and take one day at a time. Also, I believe there have been other times in history when things were supposed to happen and they didn't. All of us have to get to a point where we quit worrying about things we cannot control.
Sudio, you sound a little depressed. Have you considered counseling or perhaps either a natural or medicinal way to control the blues? I think you are consumed with worry right now and I really don't think you should be.
Have you considered speaking with a minister about the prophecy's. They can probably put your mind at ease. Nothing is guaranteed, hon, so hopefully you can find the strength to deal with the things that are bothering you. I am sure you can as you strike me as being a strong woman.
I hope this was not insensitive or harsh, I just think you are suffering unnecessarily. Hugs to you!

Throughout history, people have been curious about the "end times," and have tried, for fun or profit, to predict when and how it would actually happen. Here's an example: A guy named William Miller in 19th century Massachusetts predicted that the end of the world would be 22 October, 1844. He gathered a group of followers around him, and many of them sold their belongings in anticipation of the last day. Some bought special robes to wear on the occasion, and a number of women actually cut off all their hair to prove they were spiritual and not vain. A comet streaked across the sky in the days leading up to the 22nd -- one of the signs Miller had said to watch for. When the sign came to pass, more believers swelled the ranks of the Millerites, as the sect was called. But, as you know, the 22nd of October came and went, and nothing happened. A lot of people were duped, sold their property at a loss, and went through a great deal of angst for nothing.
I could multiply examples like this, Sudio; and they all end the same way. I know it's easy to worry about all sorts of things, particularly because of the crazy hormonal shifts we are experiencing, but always take millenarian beliefs with a HUGE grain of salt. No human being "knows" when the "end of the world" is, but PLENTY of human beings like to claim that they do, either to profit from duping people, or just out of hubris.
The best response to the Millerite craze came from Ralph Waldo Emerson, when he was confronted by one of the Millerites on the day when the end was actually supposed to arrive. The Millerite asked whether Emerson was aware of this, and Emerson sort of shrugged, and said, "The end of the world does not affect me; I can get along without it." Emerson's friend, the Reverend Theodore Parker (a famous clergyman and antislavery activist), viewed the whole end of the world scare as backcountry superstition, and so he replied, "It does not concern me, for I live in Boston." lol Both of those responses are classic.
Anyway, my advice would be to worry about things that you might possibly have some control over, and don't sweat the rest.

Wasn't the world suppose to end in 2000?
Your like me> where so sensitive right now and can think of the strangest things to worry about!
Which program did you watch?
My husband watch a program about the ancient Maya predicting more than 2000 years ago the world would end on December 21, 2012!
Well Dec 21 the is my birthday.
All I ever heard when I was growing up was preachers talking about the end of time.
Scare the crap out of me!
I remember one night a gentleman near us in church making fun of the preacher even calling him chicken little, my Mom told us how it was sacrilegious to make fun!
I remember one old lady in our church had a cave in the mountains fill with food-blankets-water.
So this is nothing new!
I'm skeptical.
Crazy thing >>>I like dome day movies!

Hi Studio -
You've really opened up a subject that I'm sure a lot of people have differing viewpoints on. You said you believe in God and were raised Baptist but aren't sure what you believe anymore.
Perhaps you should just start reading the Bible again for the answers. Although it has plenty to say about the "End times" and people have lots of different interpretations about that, one thing is certain, it is VERY CLEAR THAT NO ONE KNOWS WHEN that time will be except God Himself.
So, in the meantime, if you believe in God, then you can also take comfort in knowing that He is in control and will take care of you. Have peace in that thought and you will rest like a baby. Like the other posters have wisely pointed out, there have always been "doomsday" prophets that say it will end on a certain day and they've been wrong. (But, hey, there was usually big money it wasn't there?)
As to all those alleged "scientific" aspects? Well, come on now, if they can't even get our menopause issues figured out in the here and now, how in thunder are they to see into the future?

I read where the scholar who was brought in as the expert on Mayan culture is seething mad at how the documentary on 2012 turned out. The show pretty much through out his interpretation and based their coverage on some novelist who put the "doomsday" spin on it. According to the actual expert, 2012 was understood by the Mayans as the end of a particular astronomical/spiritual cycle, signaling a time of renewal, not death and destruction. But none of those ideas ended up in the actual documentary. The History Channel has a reputation for that sort of thing.

Just my two cents on this, without getting religious and violating any guidelines. To be very, very blunt, I think the whole doomsday stuff is pure crap. Will the earth ever cease to exist? Maybe. But I doubt it will happen anytime soon...and besides, there isn't a thing in the world we can do about it. It's the classical existential question; one that plagued mankind for centuries and caused 'the human condition'...in which we are forced to live in a world full of uncertainties. All I know is that today I am alive, and today I can love and experience life. Tomorrow I'll worry about tomorrow.
Now that I sound all mature and philosophical, I'll admit that I used to harbor this secret fear that I would diie at age 38. I've written before about this. I was all prepared for it; said my goodbyes, even wrote a letter to my family. Nothing happened. Still hear, still having hot flashes!

My $.02 worth. The earth was created to be lived on; it will stand to times indefinite. I don't think the Creator intended people to live under the conditions we do at this time. We all know the "Lord's Prayer." We are told to pray for a "kingdom to come." mmm.... But like what was said. God is in control. And if a kingdom is to come to rid us of the misery that is encompassing this globe - so be it. Obviously the world governments haven't been able to meet our "daily needs." Perhaps a one world government will. The earth was created for a purpose - perhaps going to the very beginning - a perfect arrangement lasting eons.
I always thought - if there is going to be a one world government, I want to make sure I am a worthy citizen. Perhaps thinking that way - doomsday may not be so "frightening."

it's all rubbish to my mind.. doomsday stuff, religion, destiny, all of it - i really don't think any of it is worthy of concern.. as someone pointed out here, there have been lots of dates when the world was supposed to end, guess what? we seem to be still here regardless.

I have seen some of those shows and I don't worry about what could happen in the future.
I think that I have to live every day that I have and enjoy that without worrying what may or may not happen.
I've dealt with a lot of "stuff" and every day that I have now is a gift, a bonus day and no matter how I feel on any given day, it's better than what it could be.
Please try not to let this extreme thinking bother you. You can't waste your todays worrying about what might not be. That way, you never get to live in the now.

I think it's natural at different times after the age of 40 or so to become aware of our own mortality. Possibly that's what you're doing but maybe it's representing itself as a preoccupation with when the end of the world will come. When I was 40 (I'm 53 now) if I woke in the night I would wonder about death. I wasn't depressed. The rest of my life went on as normal. I did wonder why I was doing it though! It happened again at some stage, briefly a few years later.
What I've found is that it happens before my life takes a leap forward into a completely new stage. After these thoughts come, life opens up anew, a kind of rebirth and growth. Possibly they represent the death of a stage of life, or being in a stale situation, just prior to being born anew and finding new hope, new joy - a life you couldn't have imagined before. We have to change as we get older, come to terms with each new life stage and it's hardly surprising if this brings up profound thoughts.
If you're suffering the anxiety aspects of peri and the menopause, it's easy for these kinds of profound thoughts to really affect you. When the hormonal aspects stop, the thoughts recede and take their proper place again, they get back into perspective.

Slowbear: Boy did you say a mouthful. Because it's called "The History Channel", everyone seems to think that whatever they say is sound journalism. In fact, they are just another tv show trying to rake in the profits. I've seen some really skewed episodes...everything from killer bees to the occult. Same thing with the 24 hour news channels...they drive me nuts sensationlizing everything that happens....years ago if someone died of a of mysterious bug or got kidnapped or fell off of a cliff we would read about it a couple of days later in the newspaper. Now it's a GLARING HEADLINE played over and over and over by these 'tv journalists.' The media has done a VERY good job of scaring the heck out of the public because they know that FEAR is one of the most powerful forces known to man. The most evil dictators in our human history knew this and used fear to control the masses.
You know, I have a friend who hasn't watched t.v. in over five years. At first I thought she was nuts, but now I'm wondering if maybe that isn't such a bad idea (oh dear, but I'd have to make an exception for American Idol!)

As I get older, I am coming to believe that we all take ourselves way too seriously. I recently had a strange thought where I was out in space looking down on this tiny marble we call Earth. From that vantage, all of humanity is invisible and our lives insignificant. Coming back down to earth, I realized how ridiculous things like war are when we could be having a grand old time if we chose to. We have created a lot of misery on this planet simply through our thoughts, beliefs and fears.

Anyway, I too have horrible doom and gloom thoughts about the future, but let me tell you, it is totally exacerbated by the way the media blow things all out of proportion to scare the living daylights out of us!!!....even the 'weather channel' have a hand in it with their program 'It could happen tomorrow'...that is scary.
Well....if history is true to itself, then '1984' would have been the end, so I am trying not to worry about 2012.....although I am trying to look forward to the London Olympics in 2012 so it better not happen!!!

Lets face it, as Witsend stated earlier in this thread, there have been prophesies of the end of the world throughout human history. I am not worried, even if something were to happen....nothing I can do about it anyways, so why worry?? Might as well go on living and not even pay attention to this stupid stuff! We have enough to worry about without adding stuff like this.

Ew, I watched the entire week's worth of specials on the History Channel, and it was gnawing at me. Hard to shake the kind of thoughts they put into your head. And they did such a good job of playing it up - OF COURSE - or they'd have wasted their air time.
With that said, this is not the first prophecy of the end of the world, and I'm positive it isn't the last. The stuff on the History Channel was for entertainment value, and they really did amp it up. It's most important to remember that EVERY DAY could be our last, so we need to live like it could be. Not worry about whether or not it may come 5 or 10 or 15 years from now.

I'm in agreement with you, just read the bible and be guided by that. Although having said that there are some scary things in Revelations....
Unfortunately most of these things are happening now, increased crime and violence, earhquakes etc etc leading up to the end days.

Well, my thoughts are that if enough people predict a different doomsday date, eventually someone is going to be right.
That said, I don't worry too much on that - one of the few things I don't worry too much on
But I understand why you are Sudio. It is the nature of the beast. I often wonder about the stupid garbage my mind picks up to fret over. Stuff that really doesn't matter at all, or stuff there is not a thing in the world I can do anything about. I really would love the worrying to just STOP. But for me personally it seems to be some kind of a release. As I find when I try to suppress these thoughts, that my stress and anxiety finds another place to come out - usually in very uncomfortable physical symptoms.
