If you are currently taking, or considering taking Premarin, Premphase, Prempac or PremPro PLEASE take the time to find out how these drugs are made! All of these drugs are made from Pregnant Mare's Urine causing the abuse and slaughter of thousands of horses each year.

There are synthetic, FDA-approved alternatives; Ogen, Estrace, Estradiol Transdermal System, Estradiol tablets, Estropipate, Estrone, and Meneste, and Cenestin, to name a few. Recent trials of soy products for hormone replacement have also shown good results

Thank you for sharing. There has always been a great deal of information on Power Surge about Premarin. Power Surge had both Wyeth-Ayerst, manufacturer of Premarin, Prempro and Premphase and PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) as guests in Power  Surge to specifically address the animal abuse charges. This has long been a sore point with me.

If you review the 2nd Experts page where Wyeth-Ayerst is listed (all guests are on the experts pages), you'll find that Power Surge has for years taken a strong stance on the animal abuse issue and allegations:

Wyeth-Ayerst Laboratories, a major, multi-billion dollar pharmaceutical company located in Philadelpha, PA. The company maintains the Wyeth-Ayerst Women's Health Research Institute, dedicated to the discovery of new therapies that meet the health needs of women through pharmaceuticals in areas such as hormone replacement therapy, endocrinology, and a wide range of reproductive diseases and disorders. Premarin, the world's first oral estrogen was introduced in 1942. Today, Premarin is the leading prescription estrogen replacement therapy in the United States, used by more than 8 million American women. They also manufacture Prempro and Premphase.

Note: Although Power Surge invited Wyeth-Ayerst to participate in a live forum to refute serious allegations of animal abuse regarding the manufacture of their Premarin family of drugs, and the abuse of pregnant mares whose urine is extracted to manufacture these drugs, Power Surge wishes to point out that it remains vehemently opposed to the mistreatment of hundreds of thousands of innocent pregnant mares.

At last count, there were approximately 439 producing PMU farms. Each year, more than 100,000 mares are impregnated and tied in stalls six months each year - in stalls so small they cannot turn around, take even a few steps, or comfortably lie down. Irritating rubber sacks are strapped around the mares' groins so their urine (known as PMU, or pregnant mares' urine) can be collected to make Premarin. The mares are denied free access to water so their urine will yield a more concentrated estrogen. The foals resulting from these pregnancies are considered unwanted industry "byproducts"--most are slaughtered. For those who believe the allegations of animal abuse are the result of only radical animal rights organizations, be advised that many mainstream animal's rights associations have been vocal in speaking out against Wyeth-Ayerst's inhumane treatment of animals in the production of these drugs. Read about Premarin and the abuse of innocent pregnant mares -- Dearest, Power Surge Founder.

So, as you can see, Power Surge hasn't been silent on this issue.

You can read the transcripts of the chats with representatives from Wyeth-Ayerst and PETA in the Web site's Library. Both PETA and Wyeth Ayerst were invited by yours truly a few years back to discuss those allegations.

There are numerous references to the Premarin family of drugs all over the Power Surge Web site. Case in point:

Premarin Info

I am currently on Premarin:(I am needing to find an alternative due to the endometriosis, and not wanting to just stop taking it at once, am waiting on a specialist in endo. to see what I need to do.

I can say even if I didn't have to change, I definitely would after what I have read!!  This is an outrage!!  It was bad enough I found out it came from mare urine, but little did I know just how awful this really is!

Thanks for the info...

Good +Golly, MsMolly!  I just posted my experiences with getting - very s-l-o-w-l-y - off HRT.  I wasn't on Premarin, but I'm sure the procedure would be the same.  If you want to read how I did this 3 years ago, click here.  Its on this same board, but may have sunk down on the lst by they time you see this smile.gif

This worked well for me - I never had any regrets in the 3 years that I've been off.

Please keep us posted how it goes smile.gif

Thank You MaryO:)  Going to check it out!!

I had sent away for the "Lauren Hutton" information kit; just to check it out; I will NOT be taking that medication for various reasons.  Guess what?  Nowhere does it mention the source of the drug!   ohmy.gifI am wondering what type of compensation Ms.Hutton is receiving for her commercials - which I see everytime I look at TV!

This thread was started back in June 2001. These drugs are still being prescribed sad.gif I was given a prescription on Feb 8th. for Premphase....needless to say after some research and learning about the needless cruelty to these horses..my prescription was torn up, tossed out with the trash. I Can't believe this is till being prescribed,
finola
oops..hit send I guess before I finished, wanted to finish by saying, I am very angry mad.gif and the doctor who prescribed this to me won't be seeing me again. I thought premphase and these type of HRT'S were long gone, I didn't know what he was giving me so when I came home and read about it, well............I'm just outraged. No innocent animal should have to go thru this sad.gif

Thanks for listening ~Fin~

And even if you're not bothered by the treatment of the horses, you have to wonder why you are being prescribed HORSE estrogens instead of human estrogens !

Although you asked a rhetorical question, I feel that the reason Premarin is so "popular" is because the Docs must be getting something from the co. to keep them prescribing it.

OK -- most gynos are men and don't give a toss what their patients take. But what hard men they are to know what Premarin is all about and yet keep it alive.

How can a woman trust a doc like that? How can those docs sleep at night?

Exactly, Sandra! It all just boggles my mind unsure.gif

So much for the Hippocratic oath: "... I will prescribe regimens for the good of my patients according to my ability and my judgment and never do harm to anyone ...."

I feel like most doctors are primarily concerned with their own liability. If they prescribe the standard treatments in a standard manner, they are relatively safe. This explains my GP, who after hearing about my peri symptoms wrote me a prescription for low-dose BCPs even though while he was writing I was telling him I was interested in the latest most refined treatment even if it required and extraordinary degree of patient complaince. And I'm afraid it will be the reason why, if she does it, my gynecologist will also offer BCPs to me, and Prempro when I am fully menopausal. Hell, I would sign a waiver releiving the doc of liability if this treatment I choose ends up hurting me. To me, taking bioidenticals is the ONLY sensible treatment.

Do you think men who wish/need to take testosterone are offered horse testosterone ?
