I am 61 and have suffered from stress urinary incontinence since I was in my mid 40s. I have had two surgeries to correct the situation, but both have failed beginning as early as 6 months post surgery. Last week I saw a gyno-urologist to try to find help. He has me scheduled for surgery again, but gave me estrace cream to use pre surgery. I have used it for 7 days and have not had any incontinence for 6 days! I am so happy, but worry that it wil not last. Does any one have any experience with estrace cream for urinary incontinence. Does it continue to work? Is it a safe long term solution? Don't worry, I plan to ask my doctor, but just want to find out what other women may have experience. Beckyt
Hi Becky,
I'm 55 and also have stress incontinence. For a long time it was the sneeze/cough tiny leak - then it started getting worse over the last year. At one point had I been in public it would have been disasterous! I started the Vivelle Dot 2 months ago and it got rid of the hot flashes but not the urinary part. My doc added a prescription for Estrace Vaginal Cream, which I have used now for about a month and it seems to really be helping. I'm using 2 mg (half a plunger) twice a week - but he said I could safely use 4 mg twice a week. Being cautious, I wanted to start out low first. I can feel the difference too and I know it will also help with bladder infections. Having thin vaginal tissue can cause tiny little cracks which not only can cause discomfort but can make it easier for intestinal bacteria (those nasty E Coli infections) to take hold. Estradiol cream replenshes the tissues. Since most of it remains local, very little is absorbed into the blood stream which is why it's okay to use it along with systemic HRT at your doctor's recommended dosages.
I was reading a story in one of Dr Elizabeth Vliet's books about an elderly woman (in her 80's I think) who loved to travel but had become so incontinent she needed Depends and had to give up traveling. After being prescribed Estrace Vaginal Cream her problem was cured / and without surgery and she was able to resume her travels. The doctor made the point that this simple cure is often overlooked by doctor seeking either no remedy or else a radical one.
Good luck!
