hi everyone,

a few days ago, i started in with that lousy waist ache on the left side again, now, that sort of comes and goes, but it seems as if my ribs, ARE SORE! (on the same side, the left) . it kind of starts about 1/2 an inch down below my left breast, where the ribs are, and wraps around to my back, they feel "sore" and achey, and it makes me feel queasy, like a sickly feeling! Also, it really aches up the left side of my back. now, it KNOW it's not my kidney, because on the 9th of Sept. i ran to the ER one day, thinking I DID have something wrong with my kidney, so they ran tests and came back with NOTHING,,,,the ER doc plainly told me i didn't have anything wrong with my kidney, nor were there any stones. OK, so, wht the heck is this? I have to take Tylenol PM usually once during the day, or the night, just to deal with the "soreness" and ache in the ribs, and my back. my husband seems to think this is muscular since i do sleep propped up on my couch, and many times i sleep in crazy positions, so he's chalking it up to musuclar, which COULD be what it is.....i don't know. I had thought to myself, maybe its IBS since i've had a lot of intestinal and digestive problems this past month as well. it also feels as if my abdomen becomes distended with gas, and i feel very bloated, my abdomen feels hard....BUT THEN, out of nowhere, that'll go away, but i'm still left with this weird, back ache, waist ache, and sore ribs! all on the left. ....

does anyoen ever get this? Now, my period is due in about 10 days, which means that this is the two weeks prior to my period, WHICH means, that these are what i call, the "two weeks from hell" at least for me....because, any symptom that i have anyway, gets absolutley WORSE during these two weeks.......when this began, i was perfectly in MID cycle .....so, maybe that's it......When you are in mid cycle, is it the estrogen or progesterone that drops?

thanks everyone! sincerely, mydarling

You appeared to have suffering from this a long time. It most likely is IBS or peri...But I would definitely suggest being evaluated by MD. I would ask for a pelvic ultrasound, make sure there is nothing going on with my ovaries.

Good Luck

Hi guys,

thank you for your quick responses! ok, how would my ovaries affect my waist? maybe that sounds a little stupid, i hope not....but, i don't see how . I'm certainly not saying they CAN'T affect my waist area, because i've learned latley, that EVERYTHING EFFECTS EVERYTHING, but i'd like to know that connection.....but yea, that's a good point! thank you both!!!!!!

I have mid cycle pain when I ovulate so much so sometimes I can't sit, stand or put any pressure such and bowel movements and urination. It can come around into my lower back. Pain that seems to radiate to areas outside of my ovaries. Even so with this pain the dR's suspected ovulation, but did ultra sounds to make sure nothing else was up. I suggest you do the same of it is that bad. If you think it is muscular try yoga to stretch. HUGS Mikki

I agree, having a doctor evaluate this is always a good idea. I would - in my non-medical opinion - think it's muscular, especially if it starts in just below the breast line and reaches around to the back. When you press on this area, is it sore? I pull muscles in this area a lot (it's a pectoral muscle I believe). Have you been doing any heavy lifting or sports where you torque (like golf or tennis)? You could try visiting a good massage therapist and have her concentrate on that area.

hi everyone....thank you all for replying! yeah, it does sort of feel sore to touch it, not badly, just a LITTLE sore,.....it also depends on whch way i sit or stand (or lay). it can start up out of the blue. ..i was fine all day yesterday, and then arbout 10pm, here we go! and i had such a horrible night, it was hard to fall asleep, because this was aching, i took Tylenol pm, but it didn't do all that much ,and it usually does. The ache isn't so painful that you begin to cry, but i mean, it aches...then it'll subside a little, and come back. It almost feels as though its spasming. Now, today, i took a xanax, about 1/2 hr. ago, and it seems to help it somewhat, but it doens't take it away. I think if this were somehting serious, it wouldn't come and go, nor would xanax help, even a little. Lke i said, on Sept. 9th, i had a urinalysis at the ER, and they said, nothing wrong....the doc suggested muscular. But, this is so frustrating, FOR THAT REASON, i do feel like crying! You DON'T feel like eating, bec. you know, that if you do,,,,this may start up again. now....ok, this is where the ribs are, on the left, then it wraps around my waist, causing this deep nauseating feeling deep inside my waist, and then, goes to my back...ususally lower back, but the latest developement, is that now, it begins to ache farther up my back, next to the spine! My husband had suggested i get an anti-spasmotic from the dr...which is worth looking into. Of course, i get panicky, thinking it's kidney failure, yet, the ER doc woudl have said that i'm sure!

Do you guys get this deep ache in your waist? which makes you feel queasy? and when it wraps around the back, is it where the kidney would be? (or lower?) i guess these are the questions i need answered the most.....

thank you guys!!!!!! Sincerely, MyDarling

I was having alot of IBS symptoms, don't discount anything with IBS, had a vaginal ultrasound..I had a huge hemorrhagic cyst. I don't mean to scare you either, but ovarian Cancer has a very subtle symptoms, which lead to symtoms of IBS. My friends mother had a lot of abdominal symptoms, everyone treated her for IBS, found out years later it was ovarian cancer. Believe me this is very, very, very, rare...But I think any symptoms, which are prolonged and urelieving deserves an indepth evaluation, and not to just right it off to Perimenopausal.

It most probably is peri, but you should have that looked into further.

Hi Mydarling,

Haven't visited PS for a while and only just saw your post. Just wanted to say that I've been having the same left waist/rib/backache thing as you describe. Like you, it comes and goes, my lower rib area feels sore to touch, seems to affect me more when I'm sitting/lying than when I'm standing. I have worried about kidney problems too, but I think it's probably muscular as I also get twinges in the right and have had lower (muscular) back problems for years. Also, applying a heat pack really seems to help. I did have a urine infection a few months ago and since then have had a sensitive bladder, but have had my urine tested twice and it was apparently perfectly ok. I'm sure if there was an underlying kidney problem that something would show up in my urine. Doesn't stop me from worrying, though (of course!!)

A couple of years ago at the beginning of this peri madness I had a really sore ribcage/upper back thing going on on the right side, which eventually just went away. I did a lot of online research at the time and concluded that it may well have been costochondritis. This is some sort of inflammation of the ribcage, and the soreness I'm now feeling on the left is similar. Anyway, just wanted to let you know you're not alone - hope you're feeling better now than you were when you first posted on this topic! - Jess
