Hysterectomy scheduled for next Wednesday, 9/19/07. I am biding my time, trying to finish out this week at work. I can barely walk due to either fibroids or cysts pressing on nerve - I have sharp pains constantly going down both legs. I was hoping, since I am very stressed out, my period would be late and I would not have one before the hysterectomy...no such luck. I started my LAST period from hell last Saturday, I just hope I am done with it before surgery.

I am having total hysterectomy and have been contemplating what hormone treatment to start. I am leaning toward Vivelle dot patch. I read in a post somewhere that I should request in the pre-op with doctor to have the patch put on me during recovery.

I am not sure what to expect when I wake up from the anethesia - with both ovaries gone will I immediately start having hot flashes and crying spells? I am not sure what to expect during the first few days after hysterectomy other than pain from the surgery. I would appreciate your comments about what you experienced during the first few days after your hysterectomy.

Hi ledge*S*

I had pain after my TAH, but coped quite well as the pain was bearable compared to the excruciating pain I experienced prior to my hysterectomy*S* I had terrible hot flushes for approximately 3 weeks after my hysterectomy and about three days after my hysteredtomy I experienced crying spells, which my doctor said happens for some unknown reason, a little like the third day blues after giving birth.

I had a horrific period (same every month) two weeks before my hysterectomy and was still bleeding the day I had my surgery, so don't worry if you've got your period.

Remember to take it easy after your hysterectomy, you must rest, it is very important to avoid complications and for your body to heal properly. You only get one chance to heal after a hysterectomy, so make sure you give your body the time it needs, everyone heals at a different pace*S*

If I can help you with any other concerns you may have don't hesitate to ask*S*

Please let us know how your sugery goes and take it easy*hugs*

Hi UiSurge and welcome to PS*S*

If you find it is necessary to have a hysterectomy, don't be afraid, the worst part is the waiting*S* It's very important to take it easy after a hysterectomy, give your body time to heal at it's own pace.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask*S*

I hope all goes well with your biopsy, please let us know your results*S*

Aussie is also right about the hot flashes and feeling down, a lot like after giving birth. I think it's probably because hormones are withdrawn like cold turkey. But these do not last long and neither does the pain.

You'll be up and about (depending on the kind of surgery) within a day or two, just to walk and move. Nothing strenuous for a few weeks usually (or longer depending on the kind of surgery).

I had to have exploratory surgery when this was done and I was about 26 years old. I didn't know they were going to have to do a hysterectomy but I needed to sign a waiver in the event that they needed to do this when they went in so I woke up to discover it had been done. But that was along with a LOT of repair surgery too up into my stomach (not just abdomen) area. (From sexual mutilation). So my incision was more lengthy and the work done more involved than typical.

Aloha Aussie - Mahalo Nui Loa - My concern is postmenopausal bleeding and an endometrium that is greater than 8cm. That is not a good sign especially since I waited since last July. Felt the OB/GYN cut me during a routine pap and figured I would wait. Traveled out of state and began having a regulary monthly cycle with spotting. So the concern is the health system in Hawaii is very SLOW - I will need to fly to the island of Oahu to see a specialist for the review and biopsy.
I am concerned about the hysterectomy but this site has really put me at ease. I am worried of the biopsy outcome and want them to do what needs to be done now. This site is so great... so supportive and it make an individual after reading all of the comments on different discussions feel much better and not alone. To all of you - thanks for the comments and thanks for caring!
