Since my pap test a week ago I have been in pain and abdomen was swelling and I feel pain in my breasts all the way to vaginal area. During the pap test the doctor pressed too hard on my left ovary - I about came off the table and had to refrain from screaming in agony. The pain got worse as the week after my pap test went on. Had a ultrasound two days ago, because the technician could not see my ovaries through normal ultrasound I had a transvaginal ultrasound. Pain was so bad yesterday that I went to the emergency room. The ER doctor finally told me the pain was from cyst on left ovary and fibroids and right breast was painful due to lump.

At least now I know what is wrong with me. The ER doctor suggested that I call my gyn and try to get appointment sooner than Sept. 13th which is my current appointment date. I will most definitely call her office on Tuesday morning and beg for quicker appointment. Doctor prescribed one nausea medication and three pain medications - one with anti-inflammatory, two other at different strengths so I can at least go to work and function somewhat ok.

I am relieved to know what is wrong with me. Now I am anxious to talk with the gyn about my options for cyst on ovary, fibroids and lump in breast.

Hi Ledge,

I just wanted to tell you I will be praying for you,,I left a post on your husbands thread too..I have had a painful cyst too and it went away on its own ,,my body just absorbed it..There is also a drug called Lupron that can shrink cysts and fibroids,,

The lump in your breast is most likely nothing, sometimes during the month they become more lumpy due to hormone fluctuations.
I had a lump in my breast too but it was nothing to worry about it to went away..

I know it is scary waiting for test and results, I tried to stay busy and try to think positive the best you can..

Please keep us posted.

Hugs,
Pamela

Lidge: 3 years ago I got a call from my gynecologist following my annual exam. Her first words were "Are you sitting down?" I had a suspicious lesion on my breast, and a very bad pap smear result (severe dysplasia). I was so scared. You don't know which place to worry about first! Let me reassure you; the vast majority of painful ovarian cysts are completely benign. Ovarian cancer is usually painless; which is why it is so difficult to diagnose. Through the years, I've had many, many cysts on both ovaries. Some were so painful I ended up in bed for several days. One had to be removed surgically. But they are essentially harmless.

Same goes for breast lumps; it's the ones that DON'T cause pain that you have to worry about. I know this is next to impossible, but try not to worry. This is standard stuff for most women...call the doctor the first thing Tuesday morning and let the office know you want an appointment ASAP. Peace of mind is important. I hope you feel better soon---write again!!!!

Your meno pal,

Robin

Ledge - since you've been to ER, your gyn office will see you much sooner than the 13th. The ER will have already sent their findings to your gyn (if you gave them his/her name). If they are on staff at the hosp whose ER you were seen at, your doc's office already knows. I'd call and leave message with service to have someone get back to you Tues morning ASAP with an appt. time.

Good luck.

Thanks to all who responded here and on my husband's post. I have already entered the gyn's phone number as a speed dial number on my cell phone so I am prepared on Tuesday. I am finding it hard to stay put and rest. This morning I went to fill the prescriptions the ER doc wrote - walked around for about an hour for light grocery shopping while waiting on prescriptions. I was away from home for about a hour and a half total. That short trip wore me out and I over did it. Came home with pain going down the left leg. I have made myself take it easy the rest of the day - thank God college football is back on! My favorite team (GA - Go Dawgs!) won so I was happy. The hydrocodone the ER doc prescribed is slightly easing the pain but not getting rid of the pain.

The husband is taking very good care of me. I talked him into driving me to have late lunch/early dinner out and go pick-up a fan for our living room - my couch and I have been getting to know each other since I need to take it easy. We have not put up a ceiling fan in the living room yet and it gets so stuffy and hot with the hot GA summer we are having - even hotter when I have hot flashes in there. With summer/seasonal items selling out we had a very limited choice for fans. I wanted one of those tall slim cylinder shaped oscillating fans. We found one for $50. Husband first complained that it is expensive. I pointed out that (1) it runs quitely and will not drown out the surround sound for the big screen, (2) it really does have great air flow, (3) it color coordinates with our living room and (4) it will help with my hot flashes. He went along with all but # 3, LOL! Seriously though he has been so supportive and taking excellent care of me. I am a lucky woman to have him.

they will likely order an ultrasound of your breast, and since it is painful it is very likely a cyst. Your options would be to keep it (I have so many I've started naming them) or to have it aspirated with a needle which leaves the possibility it would refill anyway.

Just wanted to add I've had all three conditions too. A transvaginal ultrasound is standard for looking at the ovaries. Like you I nearly leapt off the table when my GP pressed my right ovary. However by the time I had the ultrasound scan several weeks later (here in the UK there can be quite a wait for non urgent treatment under our National Health System) nothing was visible on the ovary and I was no longer suffering stabbing pains, it had resolved on its own.

However I was informed that I have two uterine fibroids of 1 cm and 3 cms. Presumably the treatment that is recommended depends on the number and size of the fibroids present. Since I'm no longer supplementing with estrogen, no treatment was recommended for mine. I'm not having regular periods and they thought they would consequently shrink.

I also had a breast lump and had the mammogram, ultrasound and fine needle aspiration to take a tissue sample. It turned out to be benign.

These sorts of complaints seem quite common in peri and menopausal women. One thing my GP did suggest however, was that perhaps the estrogen in the HRT I was taking when I suffered all this was stimulating breasts, ovaries and uterus. I stopped HRT abruptly and my abdomen and breasts became a lot more comfortable. Stopping abruptly did cause all sorts of other problems temporarily as I withdrew from the high hormone levels - intense menopause symptoms - but that passed.

As the others have said, try not to worry. I know that's easier said than done, but these sorts of things are very common.
