Hi Ladies,
You know I find this board so informative and you guys are the greatest. I was just getting ready to ask if anybody could describe what they mean when they say they feel dizzy. I feel drunk---and I don't drink any alcholic beverages at all. All I did was do a search and saw that almost everyone feels like that if they have dizzy spells. I hate that feeling and most of all i am so afraid I will faint or pass out. I try to keep a little tube of vicks nasal inhaler with me if I ever get that bad where I feel like I am ready to pass out/faint. I try not to use it too often because it is supposed to be used for upper respitory infections and plus I don't want to dry my nasal passages out more than they are already. Does anybody else have any suggestions on what I can do? Thought about using smelling salts but it is hard to find them in the health food store or even in regular stores. DOn't really want to order that onlline because I don't know what i am getting. Thanks in advance

I describe mine as drunk feeling...lighthead....jet lag...too much cough syrup....kind...not dizzy.....You might want to have a talk with the doc....be sure to get the thyroid check as it is very common and give very similar drunk feeling as well....low hormones, low thyroid (or high) will do it....I am eating a bit of grapefruit every day (see grapefruuit thread) and only a week....placebo effect maybe...but I think i am less drunk and foggy headed.....maybe......

About three weeks ago my wife had similar sensation and was really frightened by it. She was really bad one night after yoga so she saw her doctor and they determined (I'm not sure how as this part of her life is a bit separated from me now, getting her space I guess) that it is perimenopause related. Then she started taking Gingko Biloba and as the weeks passed the symptoms lessened and now she says she hasn't had an event in about a week. Dunno, but it might be worth the $10 to try it as she got great results in a little more than a week, or it just went away for now.

Hi Slowbear
It does sound thryoid related but I have already had my thyroid tested. The doctor said it was within normal limits. (Sigh) I still fell sort of full in my ears. Just an odd sensation

Hey RegGuy
Got a question for you....do you know how many GB capsules your wife took? I tried GB very early on but was only taking one pill a day. Thanks for sharing your wife's experience. That makes me feel a little better knowing this might be peri I am taking ZOCOR for cholesterol right now. Don't
know if ZOCOR and Ginkgo can be taken together but I would drop the ZOCOR in a heartbeat if Ginkgo would help with this spaciness.
Marrin7
Are you sure the dizziness or "drunk" feeling isn't a side effect of Zocor??

Hi Sherri,

I have a lot of allergy/sinus issues now that I never used to have, and I'm often stuffed up and light-headed. Instead of a Vick's inhaler, I use one by Olba's. It's all natural, and contains menthol, peppermint, and eucalytus. I love it. You can buy it online, or at health food stores.

Hope this helps,
Cathy

Sure. I cannot remember the exact range for normal functioning thryoid but I think it was 0.5-5.60 or something similar. Anyway two different labs did it and one turned out 1.33 and the other 2.00. Doctor said that it was normal.

Hey Cathy,
Thanks That sounds like something I would like. I am glad health food stores have it. My Vicks is nice but I am using it for a purpose that it wasn't meant for and I am afraid something my happen like getting addicted building some sort of immunity to it. Darn this fullness

Hi Sherri, I wouldn't say that I get a drunk feeling, but I do get short waves of dizziness. It never even crossed my mind that they were related to this whole thing until I heard others say it. It's not often either. I'm finding that a lot of what I've experienced is mild compared to others. Except for the anger and depression. That was the worst. I never want that again. I wish you the best and hope to talk again soon. bev

Sherry, Olbas also makes a very good oil which I use to get rid of migraines. Using a cotton ball moistened with the oil, I just dab some on my forehead and temples (being very careful not to get it in my eyes cuz it would burn like heck), and my headache is usally gone within a half an hour! The vapors from the oil are very potent, and they somehow relax my face, and open up my sinuses, so that the headache goes away. I love it! smile.gif

I have experienced this feeling of being drunk that you're talking about about 2 times in the past week. It has happened both times in the middle of the night when I get up to go to the bathroom. I drink 1-2 glasses of wine before going to bed (dr.s orders), but this is happening 5 hours later and it is intense. I had no idea it was related to menopause until I heard someone on her mention it. Let me know if you hear anymore about it. I'm very curious if this is indeed a symptom.

Hello...
It could be any of the suggested reasons, hormones or medication, etc. It may be low/high blood sugar. I had that when I was pregnant and I almost fainted a few times, when I would lie down and then get up suddenly, etc. I also developed gestational diabetes during my third pregnancy. Also, BevNichols reply about the wine. When I drink wine before bed, it puts me to sleep but I sometimes wake up at around two in the morning - wide awake - because the wine has turned to sugar. I would get it checked out at the doctor. If it turns out that you're diabetic or you have a thyroid problem, the treatment/cure will make you feel so much better.
Good luck,
daisy

Hi daisy chain, Thanks for the suggestion. This happened last night and maybe one other time. I'm not wide awake, but I feel drunk. I wake up in the morning feeling fine aside from being tired all the time. I had my thyroid checked a few years ago, was fine. Guess I should have it checked again. Never thought about diabetes. Thanks again, bev

Hi everyone
Thank you for your replies. I find them quite informative and helpful. I don't think I am diabetic. I had a CBC done at the hospital when I supposedly had a panic attack according to the doctors that treated me. My blood glucose was 110 on one test and 112 on another test. I asked the doctors if that was pre-diabetes and he said that it wasn't because this was around 12am or so and it wasn't a fasting number. I look on the internet and diabetes websites that say anything in the low to mid 100s in fine after eating a meal. I had something to eat about 4 hours before I went to the hospital. I had my blood glucose checked about 2 weeks prior to the ER and it was 85 after fasting the night before. Is it possible to still have diabetes with an 85 fasting number? By all rights I should have diabetes but I am thanking God in Heaven that I don't. My cholesterol is 242; triglycerides 168, LDL 160 and HDL 48. That is why the doctor put me on Zocor. My thyroid is fine as well. On one test it was 1.33 and the other one 2.00. I know I have high blood pressure and I had a dcotor's visit today. I asked him about putting me on Caduet because it lowers high blood pressure and well as cholesterol. He just looked at me and gave me some excuse about not wanting to do it because he wanted to be able to adjust the dose if needed. I told him I did have high BP. I measure it usally when I go into KMart and it is around 155/67. The doctor took my BP today and said it was 120/80--perfect. Then he says let me take it again and it shot up 20 points to 140/90. I said "See I told you i had high blood pressure" and he says "Moderately but not enough to worry about"!!!! He says the first reading of 120/80 was wrong because it was too far down my arm. He does not exactly instill me with confidence in him. Like I said before I have an HMO and it is hard to find doctors accepting new HMO patients in my area. I bring up the high blood pressure problem because I think that can make someone dizzy and feel faint with headrushes. I also asked for a prescription for Klonopin. I had one last year but it was short term anxiety. Wonder if some of this is part of a panic attack? THe drunk feelings I mean? When these weird symptoms come out from nowhere it scares the you know what out of you!
Just wanted to say thanks again for the oba recommendations. I am also taking Ginkgo and Natures Bounty multi vitamin pack with bioflavinoids. Thinking about adding those fiber chewalls as well. I do need to lose weight and that might help. smile.gif

Hi thanks for the reply. You know it is so funny when you concentrate on one body part (mine is with my head, eyes, and ears) everything goes out of whack. I am so hoping mine is stress related too. My ears still feel sort of full; making me dizzy but I am going to get the Olah products that Cathy and City Cat suggested. Maybe that will unblock my head.

i believe most of this is stress, i banged my head hard about 11 months ago, i am still convinced even at low times now it related, i must have a tumour or something, my god in reality i would have been dead by now or had some serious problems, i dont get headaches or nothing apart from this and bad skin hot flushes, and take pills to regulate my periods, sure sounds like stress my dr says stress can give you some strange things, mine started by occasionally to once a day every afternoon to then when i am really stressed to all day every day, then i find something else to worry about it eases to the back of my mind along with the symptoms, like i have to much else to worry about for a while then i know it will come back again when my brain is empty of stress. a bit like self torture,

but i am of on holiday friday first one in 11 years as i suffer with agoraphobia but i am fed up with letting people down my son especially ii am going its only an hour away but i need to see the sea again, i am scare dof course but i am not about to die of a panic attack i think this will give me a real boast to my sad little life at the moment,

i dont know where this courage has come from but if i cant control the lightheads here then why not go anyway to somewhere nice the only time i go out is to doctors or dentist nothing nice, i am going to do this,

wish me luck

Oh someone,
I do wish you luck. You have the voice of reason. Yes, I guess something serious would have happened by now if you had any head truama from banging your head. Yes, when I concentrate on something (like right now my knee is killing me but that is from arthritis) I don't feel these other sensations as much. I guess since I am focusing on my knee pain, it is making the problem worse especially after my orthopedist told me i would need total knee replacement. Now I feel like my right leg is cramped up and numb. GEEZ I just started taking Klonopin. Hope this takes the edge off.
I hope you have a great time on vacation. The sea can be very relaxing and I hope you get a chance to enjoy. take care
