hi everyone,

this is the second time this happened .... a few nights ago, while sitting on my living room couch talking to my husband, I "smelled" cigarette smoke, and NOBODY in my house smokes! He didn't smell it at all. I opened the front door, thinkintg maybe there was someone standing on our front porch smoking, (which I know sounds strange, I should say then, that sometimes friends of my sons come over and wait for them on the porch). But, nobody was there. OK, so, I did my usual panic thing, thinking this was some sort of brain cancer or tumor since I had read on a brain tumor site, that one of the symptoms is that you start smelling things that others don't! My husband reassured me that that wasn't the case, and it's probably this peri stuff. The "smell" disappeard within a few minutes, but still, that was weird.

Then, last night, in my bedroom, I "smelled" some sort of orangy type of smell, like say an orangey/citrus smell? (almost with a little vanilla mixed in..lol), so, I got up, walked around the house, and I couldnt smell it anywhere else. Came back into my bedroom, laid down on the bed in the same spot, and i still smelled it! Then, I got all nervous and frightened again!
WEll, this "smell" eventually disappated within about 15 minutes or so .... now, can anybody tell me what that is, is that a peri symptom? Does anyone else here get this?

Thanks girls! Sincerely , MyDarling

Hi Mydarling...

LOL.... I do the same thing but let me say this as I have gotten older my smell is definatly more sensitive...I always keep looking till I find the smell, you are not imaging this I am sure.

For one ciggeratte some is very noticable if you are not a smoker..You probly smelled one of your sons shirts perhaps as he may have been with someone who smokes, this has been the case with my son he does not smoke but his friend does and I could smell my sons clothes from across the house and his door was shut, the airconditioner pulled the smell threw the vent or something.

The citrus you smelled did you perhaps clean something with orange ?windex and other cleaners come in citrus now days and can last for sometime, pledge or antibacterial cleaner, handsoap, body lotion, wall unit air freshner with a citrus undertone?

If I look hard enough I will find the source my husband says he cant smell the things I do, I realize I just have a more sensitive nose these days.

Take care,
Pamela

LOL!
I've had the same thing happen to me at work. I distinctly smelled a pleasant floral odor that led me to believe we had a can of leaking deodorizer or something. Well, I had a fellow employee check it out, and she couldn't smell anything. Still, I went through all of the cannisters on the shelf just to make sure;)

mydarling,
I have noticed my senses are far more sensitive than they ever were. I say the same things to my husb. "do you smell that" or alot "this tastes different" It is wierd, but don't read too much into it. We drink fat free milk and my husb. picked up the wrong milk last week he got 1%. The first time I drank it was with cereal and I thought something is different, didn't know what but it was different, the next day I had it with something else and thought ok there is for sure something different and went to get another gallon only to realize then he bought 1%...he never knew and he drank more than me. Sometimes I will be like what is that smell and am puzzled because ther are no obvious(sp) signs of anything, but I know I smell what I smell. My husband says I have super hearing, we will be watching a movie and suddenly I push mute because I heard something..he is like how did you hear that or I will say someone is coming up the front walk and get up to see who it is before they are even at the door. I wouldn't let it scare you. I have never heard of such things being part of cancer. HUGS Mikki

I too have smelled the "phantom odors"usually its a perfumy smell or ugh the opposite a body odor type smell. This started along with the other peri symptoms. You are not alone. blink.gif

I am showing this thread to my husband. My sense of smell has gone throught the roof. I smell flowers way before we walk by them. I smell all kinds of things too even the "imaginary odors". The worst smell to me is the way drinking glasses smell if they are dryed upside down and even water smells weird to me. I'm so glad to hear that I'm not the only one with a sensitve smeller laugh.gif

Hi, This very same thing has been like the plague to me for the past few years. I will have this phantom smell for days at a time, usually cigarette smoke, (no one has EVER smoked in my house) and no one else smells it. Anyone know if these are symptoms of menopause? bev

i sometimes smell a floral sort of fragrance through the house.. there are no flowering plants near the house, i do not use floral scents, or any scent at all. i smelled the same sort of thing in the last house we lived in as well.. i thought i was going crazy! lol... i have never figured out what it could be..

I find this to be true before my period when my symptoms are the worse. I even have trouble with food not tasting good or right to me and it's because my sense of smell is very acute at this time. My husband thinks I'm crazy.....I've finally learned just not to go out and eat during this time.

I sure wish my phantom smell was a sweet floral scent!! I always smell cigarettes and I don't smoke and I am not ever around anyone who smokes. Believe it or not!! It's the truth, but it's VERY VERY strong! I thought I was losing my mind. bev

Hi,
Since I started peri. - I'm sensitive to smells...meaning that I smell things that others don't. I've smelled flowers, perfume, wood and cigarettes within the house. After awhile when ever I smelled the cigarettes, flowers, perfume, I didn't question it anymore - I make a joke that maybe my Mom, who was a smoker and she has been deceased for 21 yrs., was coming for a visit and just watching over me. rolleyes.gif
