I don't know where to put this post (okay, so I know where you might all be *telling* me to put it wink.gif laugh.gif ) but I hope you can help me a bit with this issue. tongue.gif

I live in California and today it's hot. blink.gif It's almost 90 degrees. Lately, since peri, I've noticed that I'm very sensitive to smells. When it's hot like this, even though I stay indoors I can
still smell the heat.....(I know that sounds odd....but it's like I have a heightened sense of smell and can smell the pollens?). blink.gif It's a heavy smell and it makes me cough and I end up
with a catch in my throat that lasts most of the day. I have my air purifiers on and have
been staying in my bedroom for the most part. But it's annoying ... unsure.gif

Last year we had intense heat here for seven days in a row with no relief. I had fans on, doors open, etc., and didnt' have this coughing, throat problem.

Can anyone relate to this? I've been told it might be asthma...but since I've never
had to deal with asthma (besides asthmatic bronchitis) is this also part of perimeno? I know the senses can be heightened in peri.......so maybe I will not have to deal with this health
issue when I'm thru the transition? I know I DO have a heightened sense of smell.....and
that's something new......so maybe it opens me up to more issues. sad.gif

Doctors don't know what to do with me much anymore and I get the best help here anyway.
My chest gets tight from all the coughing and the heat smell is "dry." ....does that make any sense to anyone? Maybe I'm just nuts and need to shut up. laugh.gif
I hope someone can help me out with this as it is quite uncomfortable.

Thanks much!!

Guitarplayer Sue Hi guitar player i can relate to you, lately i can smell anything stonger then i usally did, I go into a grocery store i can smell the coffee or detergents in a way it freaks me out the smell. Its a weird sensation i get in my nose, And for the dry heat i can actually smell the heat in my nose it scares me when i',m outside in shed or a hot room. I sorta feels like i can't breathe good through my nose. And i have been having bad allergies and stuffy nose and congestion in throat, I do live in calif high desert. So ii'm guessing its another peri=hormonal problem with us. I wish you the best of luck. Liz

I don't really have the smelling problem, but I do have the cough. It's about to drive me crazy. I get this tickle in my throat all the time. At night I wake up with the tickle and have to go out and open a pop and keep it by the bed. Water for some reason seems to aggravate it more. I never had problems with allergies or anything all my life and I really don't know if it is an allergy or what. Did someone say coughing is another symptom of peri or meno?

Thanks for your input laugh.gif The coughing and tight chest seem to only bother me in the really hot weather (we're having a heat wave at the moment). wink.gif blink.gif I don't do well in the heat to begin with, but breathing that hot, grassy stale burned air is what chokes me up.

I had a condition called Dermagraphia. It's a rare allergy, but it is also related to hay fever (of which I've never had) and asthma. And I never had dermagraphia before peri that I know of. For those of you who want to know, dermagraphia is a skin allergy. My doctor can run his fingernail across my bare back and raise a red welt. This should leave only a white mark...NOT a red welt. So I'm extra sensitive to a lot of things these days and have to be extra cautious.

Last night as the house cooled off, I stopped coughing and felt MUCH better. Today is another hot day so I'm sure the coughing will start up again. I seem to only be bothered
during heat or if I'm sick. I don't have the night coughing but maybe something at night
is triggering your cough, too, Suzie Q (I used to be called that, too) smile.gif

Liz, you and I are a pair. It sounds like we experience the same thing.......and people around me don't understand it. They look at me like I have two heads. (do I???? blink.gif )
Maybe it's something in the air in California now.....who knows, you know? tongue.gif tongue.gif

Thanks for the input and I wish you both a good day!!
I hope to get thru the day without coughing my lungs out.... laugh.gif laugh.gif sad.gif tongue.gif ohmy.gif unsure.gif rolleyes.gif

Susie Q,
Yes! I have read in several places where they do mention cough as a symptoms of peri. I think one of the places is in the Women to Women web site. I also had this anoying cough for about 6 months. I was starting to really worry my husband. But out of the blue it stopped. Good luck to all of you!

I became very sensitive to odors when I started thru menopause in my 40's. Everything (literally) seems to irritate my throat & I react either by coughing or clearing my throat. I am now 63, post menopausal & symptoms have not improved. I hardly ever go outside w/o wearing a mask. I seem to be allergic to everything including a lot of foods. I wish you the best. Hopefully you will find relief for your symptoms.
