Hello,

I was wondering if anyone has ome ideas on low-fat and low calorie milk alternatives for calcium. I just found out I have osteopenia and although I have taken calcium for the last few years regularly, I wasn't drinking milk. Well I started drinking mike again and I don't feel well drinking it. One Dr told me I had a high cassien level so I'm probably lactose intollerant to some degree. Also, I don't do well with sugar, and I think milk sugar is bothering me. Any ideas would be appreciated. I'm 58 and 6 mos. post-menopausal. Currently taking testostorone and other supplements. No estrogen.

Thank you,

Yogurt! I dislike milk and am somewhat lactose intolerant, and yogurt agrees very well with me.

Thanks so much,

I did see in another message that low-fat yogurt has in 1 cup 42% of the daily requirement of calcium needed daily. That is awsome. I have been eating it for breakfast, so I'll eat it twice a day from now on. I buy the Stoneyfield Organic low-fat plain yogurt and add a little vanilla and sweetner. It tastes really good, even the fat-free.

Plain yogurt and good quality real cheese have more calcium and almost no lactose ( if you are indeed lactose intolerant). casein is completely different issue from lactose (milk sugar). I don't drink and never did much regular milk, I prefer yogurt ( plain, full fat no sugar added) and good real cheese in moderation. Make sure you get yogurt that contains live culture, this is the best source of bioviable calcium lactate (calcium in milk and lactic acid), it take a bit of fat to digest calcium, so full fat or lower fat (not non-fat) versions are much better absorbed than non-fat one.
I think many adults are lactose intolerant, but some are also allergic to casein. if you have heart pounding after dairy, then it may be a sign of food allergy, not so much lactose per se. if you suspect it is sugar -related, then check your blood glucose shortly after drinking milk. Overall, I believe fermented dairy is much better than regular milk.
