Hi everyone,

I'm going to post this on the AM I STARTING PERI forum as well, I'm getting desperate here! The thing is, I started gettting this "burning" or "stinging" sensation about a week ago, right after my period started. It is on my face, ONLY ON THE LEFT SIDE, on the cheek, next to the nose (left side), over to the TMJ joint outside my LEFT ear, and into the ear itself and up the temple...ON THE LEFT SIDE! This comes and goes....but as the days have worn on, it mostly "comes", more than "goes". Today is very bad!!!
It doesn't burn or sting on my forehead. It is now beginning to make me feel quesy. It can also "burn" or "sting" on the side of my head, sort of above the ear, going around towards the back fo the head (but it never reaches the real back of my head). The very latest, as of tonight, is that it is acutally burning or stinging up in the LEFT nostril a little. THIS IS NUTS!

Now, what I'm wondering is, could this be hormonal? or a nerve? or what? Ive been trying to find out the info. on the net, but I don't get any real answers, its always so vague, and of course, attributes this to many different things (one of them being hormones). I didn't have this till the day of my period, and after. So, I've had this now for about a week...on and off, but like I said, it's gotten worse! It's not on the RIGHTside, ONLY ON THE LEFT. I looked up rosecea, and honestly, it doesn't really sound like that, maybe a little bit. This afternoon, I called my GYN's office and got the "lovley" nurse, who insisted taht he was to busy to talk to me (ok, I can understand that) and I asked her to have him call me back when he got the chance, or that I'd be glad to call back in a little while. She agreed to that. Well, about 4 hours went by, and I didnt hear. So, I called back, and got her again.
I'm not really to fond of her..lol...but I ended up describing this to her, and she basically told me it sounded hormonal. Now, what exactly are we talking about here? She had to get off, she was busy, so I didn't get a chance to ask her in DEPTH what she meant. Does this mean that my estrogen is off, or my progesterone? or what? I mean, this is driving me nuts. It's actually burning and stinging now on my lips, my upper gums, and the roof of my mouth BUT ONLY ON THE LEFT SIDE!!!!!

IS THIS HORMONAL? if it is, then what's happening here?

thanks everyone! sincerely, MyDarling

Hi Laura -

I'm writing to offer you some support because I know how frightened you are. I and so many other women, including yourself suffer with so many bizzare symptoms that its difficult to keep up with it all isn't it? I can only tell you that I had a burning face last week if this helps ... my stomach is messed up too (feels like a gnawing empty feeling there ...and I'm still a little anxious. I am very sorry you're still toughing it out. I know you want reassurance...someone to tell you it's all hormone related ... ( and most probably it is ..) You are not alone with these symptoms and the terrible anxiety that goes with it.

Love and Hugs

Hi, I just read your symptoms because I was looking through this forum to see if anyone else out there was getting weird symptoms on their face. I can related to the oversensitive/burning type sensation you have been getting on your face - and yes, mine is also on the LEFT SIDE of my face only. My burning sensation affects the area around my left cheekbone and sometimes climbs up to the left brow area.

I first discovered this weird symptom about 3 weeks ago when I happened to have 1/2 of red wine. I'm not much of a drinker at all, but every now and then I do like to have a glass of red wine with dinner. Well, I had just had about 3 sips when suddenly my face went beetroot red and then the burning sensation appeared on the left side of my face. I thought I was getting facial shingles! After a long while the burning went away and for a few days I was okay. I then decided to test it out again, thinking it was an allergy to the wine, so I drank 1 sip only of red wine, and sure enough the feeling came back, but a couple of days later it came back on its own without my drinking any wine. So I proved it wasn't the wine, but simply some nervy/sensitive skin thing on my left side. I also noticed that there is the slightest puffiness over both cheekbones on my face. This is hard to notice unless you look closely, but I am sure this puffiness is related to the blushing cheeks (when drinking wine) and the sensitive/burning skin on the left side of my face. I also noticed that I tend to blush more now - especially if the room happens to be warm - and then I get this sensitive/burning sensation.

I am 45 years old and have recently been pronounced "post menopausal". My blood test came within post meno range for hormones, with estrogen also falling. So my feeling is that this skin sensation thingy is definitely related to hormones. By the way, at the time I discovered this problem I was getting hot flashes too. They only started up about 1 month ago. Luckily I have the hot flashes under control by using natural progesterone cream. There is a fantastic book, which has helped me ever so much, called: WHAT YOUR DOCTOR MAY NOT TELL YOU ABOUT MENOPAUSE by Dr John R Lee (he also wrote one about perimenopause as well. Anyway, this book explains so much about what happens with our hormones, and Dr Lee's approach is a natural one: diet, nutritional supplements, exercise and natural progesterone cream.

I am so glad I read this book because while the sensitiveness in my face is still there, at least I got rid of my hot flashes and I understand a lot more about hormones now than I ever did before.

Hope this info helps to reassure you a little more about what is happening with you. I found a lot of doctors just want to put you on drugs and they never listen, so I decided to educate myself and listen to my own body, and that is how I will overcome this menopause symptoms. After all, Dr Lee says that menopause is not a disease, but simply a transition into the wisdom years of a woman's life. It needn't be a horrible time for us, but an enriching one, but only if we know what to do about our bodies.

I would like to hear from you as I believe by now you probably have more info about what is happening with the burning sensation.

Best regards,

Rosepurple
