Full Version: Should I be using progesterone cream?
Power Surge Forums > Board Discussions > Am I Starting Perimenopause?

Hi again,

I've been reading things on this site and elsewhere, and I am more confused than anything else. I am 41, having many symptoms of perimenopause (I posted a couple of days ago with details), yet my blood tests indicate perfectly normal hormones. I remember that the month when I had the tests done happened to be a "good" month, so perhaps the tests would read differently in a different month, but the bottom line is that I don't know that my hormones are off kilter for a fact. Being that this is the case, is it wise to start something like a progesterone cream? What would be the harm in using it if I don't actually need it, hormonally?

Has anyone else had this situation where blood tests were normal but you were actually going into perimenopause?

Thank you.

Hello,
I tried Pro-gest about 3 or so years ago when I was having sensations of peri. I didn't get my hormones checked. I couldn'tget a dr. then to check them. I knew whether they came back "normal" or not I was experiencing alot of sensations and severe pms. Progesterone I believe drops anyway the later part of your cycle. Even women in there 20's take it for the last 2 weeks of their cycle for pms.

When I tried it I beleive it worked, but it took a couple of mo. It just seemed to take the edge off...I still had sensations, but they were toned down to a managable level. It started to lose it's impact about a year ago when I started to get hotflashes and other peri feelings that I hadn't felt before that come with lowering estrogen.

I read that even men take progesterone so ( not sure for what)..........

Hope this helps with your decision...Mikki

Hi Mikki,

Well, I am having hot flashes here and there, so if that's a low estrogen thing, perhaps progesterone isn't what I need?

back then I was getting them also here and there...not real regular though. When I noticed the progest not working as well I started to get hotflashes daily and hourly. I have heard progest. also helps with hotflashes...maybe mine were just too severe. they have let up some since.

One thing I have heard Drs agree that hotflashes are caused by a lowering of estrogen, but in the first part of peri I believe it is the progesterone that decreases before estrogen actually does. Hence the term estrogen domonance which is waht we usually go through first. I know it is all hard to grasp. I was trying for a long time to figure out what I needed and when, but I just gave up. I just try to eat well and do everything natural and take vit. Mikki

Greetings from Charlotte, North Carolina!
I recently had a blood test where my estrogen level was considered high. Even so, my body still needs more. I just had a hormone pellet implant on Tuesday to give me even MORE estrogen. I am thrilled with the results so far! Already I have more energy and can actually THINK MORE CLEARLY! So, your blood test may read *normal* for the average female walking this earth, but maybe not for YOU!

Hope this helps,
PattySue
