I am not sure what forum to ask this question in, but since hot and cold is part of the title of this subforum, here I am.

As part of trying to figure out what might be wrong with me and why I also feel so lousy and often hurt all over, I have been taking my temp orally with a digital thermometer occasionally over the last few weeks. Not once has it been above 98 F, and it mostly hovers around 97, occasionally getting up to 97.7 or so. I am wondering if anyone else has this.

I am not losing hair (other than what is nromal for everyone), nor am I especially fatiqued nor do I have brain fog, all symptoms of low thyroid function. I do realize that there is some range to nromal, that 98.6 is an average, but still 97 seems a bit low. I do feel cold all the time in winter, and also don't tolerate extreme heat well.

I have severe anxiety which I know can make you FEEL cold, but no idea if it or female hormones can impact actual body temp. I am thinking that maybe some other hormone level is also off.

Hi,
I had lower body temperture than that around 96, I had numerous blood tests including thyroid and they all came back normal. I think some peoples temperture vary, especially for women during ovulation and stuff. If it makes you feel better have your Dr. run some tests. I also, get cold more easily than I use to. good luck.

Hi Ladies,

Normal temperature should be between 97.8 and 98.2;I read recently and article from Dr. Susan Lark that a temperature below 97.8 is indicate of an underactive thyroid. Yes, our temperature does fluctuate at ovulation. Anyway, the test she recommends is: Take an old-fashoined glass thermometer, shake it down, and put it on your night table before you go to bed. Immediately upon waking, put the thermometer snugly un your armpit for full 15 minutes ( do this before you get out of bed and before dlong any moving around). After 15 minutes, read and record the temperature and date and repeat the process for 3 straight days.

My naturopath use the same technique except she says to take it orally for 10 days and if your temperature is consistently below 97.8 for 10 days then you have an underactive thyroid. The doctor can do a thyroid antibody test besides the TSH, t3 and t4 test.

I have a low body temp, too. I'm usually 97.7 or lower. I've been this way for quite some time and all my thyroid tests are normal. I'm cold a LOT. I wear sweatshirts daily because I get really cold. I'll get pale, too. I'm NOT convinced my thyroid is normal. I don't think
my doctor knows what to do with me anymore...and I'm too tired to find another one. I've been thru the mill already...have had ENOUGH tests to break the bank, and my tests are all
normal. blink.gif

Last year I also had these weird "cold spots" on my shins. It felt like no blood was getting to the skin. I had lots of tests done and they all came back normal. I also have fibromyalgia and CFS so I didn't really think peri would be the cause of the cold spots. However, after reading these threads I am pretty sure that's what it is. Sometimes I get a
feeling like all the blood is draining out of my body, too. Not a pleasant sensation, to say the least. blink.gif

On the flipside, I am getting lots of burning hot flashes. Right now I have one and my face looks red as a tomato. I'm cold, tho...but my face is on fire. Chills from hell (oh! what an oxymoron that is!) HA! rolleyes.gif I was in the book store the
other day and was talking to a clerk and I felt one coming on.....I felt myself going all red and I was really embarassed. As we ended our conversation I walked outside and took off my sweatshirt. My arms were bright red as well and I was sweating but I was cold in my core. Go figure. Just another strange set of symptoms we go thru.

I've learned to wear hoodies with light t shirts underneath so I can adjust as my body
dictates whether I'm going to be hot or cold. Lately, I burn but I usually am very cold.

Best of luck to all of us..........*going to get yet ANOTHER sweatshirt*

My TSH level just came back sky-high. I also have very low body temp. The doc I work for wants me to take temp in the evening about 15 mins prior to bed and upon awakening. I remembered this a.m. to do it: 95.4......I think I am clinically deceased! laugh.gif

I have hashimotos and i have never had any symptoms till now. ive had it for 4 years. now all of a sudden my feet are freezing cold all the time and i cant get them warmed up unless i get into a hot bath. my anxiety and panic are starting to come back too, altho that could be because i have some new stressors going on right now.
as far as the body temp. mine has been around 97.2-97.7 for a few months and yeaterday it was 96.3. i called my doc and she said that anything 96 and over is normal. actually it was another doc in my docs office. im suspicious of that. i think that anything under the normal 98.6 would indicate low thyroid and should be checked out. when i had mine checked it was high but borderline but i tested positive for antibodies. no symptoms tho except anxiety and panic.
also , about the low temp., im due to start my period any minute. sue

Here's another thread about low body temp:

http://www.power-surge.com/php/forums/inde...showtopic=10145

Do a Google search on "cool mice". There's a study regarding body temp. Here's what I wrote in the other thread:

I don't want to post a link if I'm not supposed to, so I recommend that all of you cool people do a 'net search on "cool mice". A study last year revealed that mice that were genetically altered to be .5 to .9 degrees cooler than normal mice lived longer without changing their diet ! Female mice lived up to 20% longer, male mice up to 12% longer. Don't know if this applies to humans, but some scientists are thinking that 98.6F is not the optimal body temp, that 97.7F is.

normal for me is 97.7.....
terribletoodle
Well, 98.6 IS just an average for apparently healthy people, meaning many perfectly healthy people fall above and below. So no one should immediately conclude something is wrong if their temp is somewhat lower. I have decided, since starting this thread, andafter taking my temp many times in the last few weeks, that maybe 97.1 to 98 is just normal for me these days. I noticed that it often goes up after a hot shower or after vigorous exercise. It has gotten over 98 a few times.

Years ago, I used basal body temperature as a guide to ovulation, as part of Natural Family Planning method of birth control. I do recall that pre-ov. my temp was alway below 98, often around 97.6 or 97.7, then it would jump to 98.3 to 98.6 after ovulation. And I felt great and enjoyed very good health. Perhaps once one stops ovulating, the body temp stays at a lower level.

Hi, just responding to the low temp issue...this has happened to me since I have turned 48 and having some other weird symptoms as well...I do get hot flashes/sweats, but the 97.5 or lower temps and feeling really cold is more annoying. Yes, test after test and nothing. Dizziness has hit me these past few days and has also been a reacurring problem.

Gina - ask to have your thyroid checked. Consistent low temps (check yourself every morning upon arising and then before you go to bed and record the temps) are an indication of thyroid problems.

about the low temp thing, mine always seems to be between 96.6 and 97.7. i went to the hospital twice in the past few mnths for other things and i asked them what my temp was and it was in that range there too and they said that is considered normal now, not 98.6.
