Hi
I am 48 years old and have been having pretty standard peri symptoms for about one year - night sweats, irregular periods, mood swings etc but now I am nauseated (mild but noticeable) throughout the day in waves every day for about a month- Have also lost about 3-4 lbsl due to lack of appetite - (normally a big eater) have had all the regular gastro exams including enoscopy and a internal sonogram of ovaries and uterus - nothing turned up. Is anyone else experiencing this nausea regularly - its been about a month and I need some commuity on this.
Hope someone's out there

Hi Pookish,
I had a couple months with the exception of a few days inbetween that I always felt sick. Waves like you say. After I got my first bite of food down I instantly felt better. I don't know what it is. I still get nauseated before my period but in the last couple of months the inbetween days have subsided. When I start to get the burn in my stomach (usually always at night) I pop a tums.
Hope you feel better soon!

Hi Pookish,
For a while I had really bad nausea daily that lasted a few months. One day it just vanished and (knock on wood) it never returned hopefully along with my periods! BTW I'm almost 48 and no period since mid Dec. 06. Good Luck

I've only just found this thread but I have had this recently. For virtually the whole of January and February I felt sick and had no appetite at all, I never actually thought I was going to be sick but I had to force myself to eat. I ended up losing a whole stone in weight before I saw my doctor who wasn't at all concerned because by then I had found my appetite again. I am now struggling to put back on the weight . I have always been a good eater but have never put on weight easily - sorry , I know some people would love to have to have that problem but I have always been too skinny.
It was just how I remember feeling when I was pregnant so it stands to reason that it was probably all hormonal. I actually think I started feeling better possibly when the progesterone cream kicked in, worth a thought!!

Hi Pookish,
yes, I experience nausea too, just like you said, it comes in waves. Jan. and Feb. of this year wwere the worst, but actually, I've just passed through a couple of days recetnly where I was a lot more nauseas, so I guess some hormonal change sets it off.
I've noticed though, that lots of ladies here, have had it hit them hard in Jan. and Feb., just like myself, so, I don't know what that could be, but the nausea is part of the peri.
Sincerely , MyDarling

Janey - thanks for responding - yesterday i had several good hours in a row which is encouraging. Been to many docs and none could help - just thinking of food makes me nauseated. Its no good losing weight cause you don't feel well - it's only good if you intend to lose it.
warm regards and thanks for your kind reply - ps i don't know anything about the progesterone cream - I probably should investigate

thanks you for your suuport - it is amazing to me that the "mainstream" docs disregard nausea as a peri symptom - be well - pookish

Love your name by the way. Why did you pick that? ( I have a character I draw I named Pooka) Anyway, nausau is a new symptom for me. I don't get it much but every now and then I feel like I did when I was first pregnant with my son. I don't feel like throwing up but it is more of a quesy feeling. I wouldn't worry to much since you have been to the doctor. My doctors don't think any of my symptoms are related to peri. One said "Your period just stops" Oh my if it was just that simple. Eee gads.
Feel better.

Hi All,
Sorry just found this one so apologies for the delay.
I too have had this since peri started 3 years ago - on and off, can go weeks without it and like you it kind of rolls over you all of a sudden in a big wave. sure it is hormone related as it does seem worse at certain times of the month.
I drink peppermint tea to try and alleviate it and I think it works a bit too.

Nausea was my first odd symptom. There is a thread - "menopause and nausea" - I posted in Aug 2005, this was about the time I first joined PS. The nausea eventually left only to be replaced by even worse symptoms. Please don't assume this will be the case with you - just sharing.
I look back and realized I have been complaining for two full years on PS. I never would have dreamed it would get this bad.
I look back on the nausea and wish I was just where I was then. I felt nausea all morning, but not bad later in the day.
I feel like peri is like a virus that travels through our body attacking one system after another. Makes sense in that our hormones affect everything in our body. Why are some women so lucky?

Yes and why are they the only women they write about in Menopause books, which then makes you feel like a freak/hypochondriac !
Yes nausea was one of my symptoms too and by the end of peri I would feel sick and then have terrible hot flushes. 2 years post, I occassionally get this and I still get, what I assume to be, estrogen trying to kick in. Lately my boobs have felt full and my nipples are red and very tender. I Googled it and it came up with an item on Powersurge in 2002 - the wise woman web!

Dear'islandgalkc,
When I was first diagnosed Menopausal a frequent symptom was nausea and lack of appetite.Small sips of Ginger Ale,or waem water with a squeeze of lemon juice was very helpful.Keeping away from caffeine and sugar seemed to help too.It will eventually get better.
Stay Strong

I also have been suffering horrible nausea and vomiting attacks for about a year now, usually from one to three "attacks" a month that can last anywhere from one to four days. I have been seeing a gastroenterologist who has ruled out a bacterial infection and I'm due to haved a colonoscopy in two days. He thinks its irritable bowel syndrome, but I am starting to think that whatever this is is more linked up to perimenopause. I'm 38 years old...and it seems like there have been all sorts of triggers that bring on my attacks, but the one constant is it is always during that "danger zone" of those two weeks before the period, usually closer to one week. I had my last attack on New Year's Eve, joy of joys. So the New Year is starting off with battling this monster right off the bat.
I've tried peppermint tea, peppermint caps, Pepcid AC, charcoal tablets, Acacia fiber supplements...so far nothing seems to stave off an attack when it happens.
Once I get the colonoscopy over with, I am going to see a gynocologst or endocrinologist and get my hormones checked out. I am not crazy about going onto birth control pills, but I'll do anything to stop this horrible thing that's come into my life.

oh boy !! i have had the nausea/vomiting/lack of appetite too. It started in August and is still with me. I lost weight but the lack of appetite is driving me and my husband nuts as I dont ever feel hungry when he does!! It seem to be getting a little better but really feel like I have to starve myself during the day in order to want to eat a decent evening meal.

Nausea has been an off and on again constant in my peri/meno experience. At my worst, I had it for about a year. Then it tapered off and came back occassionally. I'm having it again now. No fun, as you know! What helps me is to have something in my mouth - a mint, ice, water, etc. I think that stimulates the saliva and that helps. A dear friend told me to get a fresh ginger root, peel a section about the size of your little finger, grate the ginger, and steep it for 30 minutes in simmering water and then drink the liquid. I'm doing that now and it does seem to quell the intensity a bit for me.
I too have had constipation throughout peri/meno. I started taking 16 oz of warm water with organic psyllium seed, followed by another 10 oz glass of warm water and it has essentially "cured" me of the constipation about 99% of the time. The psyllium seed becomes VERY gooey in the water - so you want to stir it well and drink it right away.
Hang in there - I feel for you! kathleent
