Full Version: Going to Endo on Friday

A little Hx: been hypothyroid for many many years and on low doses of Levoxyl and Prozac. Last August I decided for myself that I didn't want to be on meds anymore so I weaned myself off of both. blink.gif Was feeling very very good until Nov. when peripause kicked in big time.

anyway to move forward, these last couple of months with the hormones and the peri have brought all sorts of things to fruitition - my lack of self-esteem, my depression issues, my communication issues. Anyway started with a CB therapist.

Therapist and I decided I need to get back on an AD. I crashed and burned big time over the last two weeks - can hardly get through a day without bawling my eyes out, so of course I am not getting max benefit out of my therapy. So my endo agreed to see me on Friday. I am sure part of it is the thyroid, part is the peri, and part is my depression - but with bloodwork I hope we'll know what percentage of each.

My question to you ladies is: have most of you ruled out thyroid/adrenal problems? I realize meno goes hand in hand but do any of you know how much of your physical problems are based in thyroid dsyfunction?

Curious.........

First off I understand what you mean when you say that you *crashed* after going off the AD. Exactly the word I used to use. I think depression alone mimics a hypothyroid problem, the shifting of hormones and the *crashing* fatigue can as well. Apparently during this time our thyroid is always shifting, not saying to extremes but shifting. I think you make a good point when you ask about adrenal functions, something I never did, and should look into. When you get the answers to the Thy/Adren answered and find that they are o.k, you'll know that you are dealing with the nature of peri (in my opinion, harder than dealing with the others;-)
This month was my worst month of depression. I am hoping that in the next days (when my period should come) I will be better again. I had a spotting a few days ago but that was all. If I don't feel better and next month is bad I feel I will have to give in and look into an AD. I took Prozac for about 7 years and swore never to go back on. I'll have to accept that depression it is a part of peri.
One tip I can give you is that I was on BC for 3 months to control bleeding. I am a BAD candidate (smoker) but if I COULD take them I would. The exhausten was gone and I felt great. Perhaps if all tests are good you could look into Hormones before AD's??
Feel better, I am sure there is a good day waiting around the corner for you!

Wondering how it went Marrin! Did you get any results back yet??

No results yet on the bloodwork, but he did give me a script for Prozac which I am in dire need of!

Thanks for asking smile.gif

Marrin7,
Hi! I am also hypothyroid. Have been for 18 years. I also have had the left side of my thyroid removed for nodules. They ruled out thyroid cancer. Several times over the years I have went off my Synthroid, either ran out of pills, no money for refills, or just wanting to see if I could do without it. Big mistake each time! Last fall I decided that I would try natural thyroid support and weaned off the Synthroid. Oh, man... the anxiety and nervousness.. I couldn't eat. I finally went to the dr in Nov and my TSH was 245! It's supposed to be between .5-5. I still have yet to rule out that it was all my thyroids fault. I went to the natural dr and he put me on adrenal, ovarian, thyroid supports. When he tested me he said my thyroid was doing good... so I don't know why the TSH was so high. I did not have any fatigue, still don't. My endo seems to think I'm some better because I'm taking her drug, Synthroid, again. She does not like that fact that I'm taking natural supplements. Plus no one can explain the fact that even when I was on the Synthroid last year I still skipped 2 periods.. and upon resuming Synthroid I still skipped yet another period. She finally did admit Tues when I seen her that I was chemically unbalanced.. I just looked at her.. she said, okay your hormones are out of whack. Duh! and it's not all my thyroid, I'm sure. I haven't heard back from her yet for the blood results but she did at least run estrogen, progesterone, FSH and LH levels. I definitely think that if you're hypothyroid you should be on medicine. I still take Synthroid plus the thyroid tissue for support and all the other supplements. Anyone know of a good endo in Central Ohio that likes natural medicines or Armour thyroid? Who will work with you to help you not just shove prescriptions down your throat? She wants me to take Seraphin/Prozac a couple weeks out of the month to see if that helps. I haven't heard a good thing yet about Prozac. The very name irritates me. I think alot of my problems started when I was off the Synthroid but I believe alot of it was peri-. I thinks it's crazy that the female drs all say I'm too young and take an anti-depressant while the male drs say yes, you're hormonal. Why can't the female drs see it? Oh, well, I'm sorry for griping. Hope you feel better.
