Hmmmm thinking here.  I did say anything didn't I.  Well let me clarify myself then.  If there is anything that I've learned during this journey that we're going through, and I can help somebody else that maybe was like me in some way, I will be glad to pass it along.  As far as anything physical, you better believe I'm very very expensive!!!  That was my career and I'm retired now.  LOL

Hello all,

I haven't read all the posts here so I may be duplicating what has already been posted. Just wanted to share... since I started taking power-surge multivitamins for active women(1 per day) my night sweats have disappeared! It's the only change I've made so I know it's the vitamins. Hmmmm!

Tex

Hurray! That's great news, Texwoman!!!!

Tex....what great news smile.gif  I am getting ready to order my Power Surge vitamins and thanks for sharing such encouraging information. No surprise that something Dearest is endorsing is top quality.  In the 8 years I've known her she's never suggested or been involved with anything but the best.  So happy Power Surge vitamins have given you so much relief so quickly. smile.gif

Peace and light.

I seem to have my hot flashes only at night and they seem to start about 6 pm and go until 4 am. Sleep is almost impossible. I am not bothered with them during the day. Has anyone else had it like this. I am wondering............does the estrogen drop severely at night? I stopped my hormones in Nov.
tiamaria
I found some information and am trying some new things that seem to be relieving a lot of my night sweat and hot flash symptoms.   I think I made more sense in the post I just made on the thread about whether or not Revival is making symptoms worse, so refer there if interested, for explanation!

Basically, paying attention to my male hormones, along with adding Peruvian Maca root to my phytoestrogen herbal replacements and OTC progesterone cream, has made a big difference.

PS  And so has watching my carb, sugar and caffeine intake.   I was watching Dr. Perricone talk about his diet on PBS yesterday and he suggested drinking teas instead of coffees, soda, etc.  I started drinking more teas and have switched to mixing juice with sparkling water as a substitute for sodas.   I did notice the night sweats got worse one week when I ate a lot of pasta (full of carbs,) so maybe there is something to that.

HI!  I just heard about this web site and am grateful to know that I am not going crazy with night sweats.  Most of my friends have not had them just have the hot flashes during the day...nice to know I am not alone. The night sweats started last year and at first I only got them the first few days of my period.  Now my period comes whenever but the night sweats are quite regular.  I was someone who used to be cold all the time and now sleep with the window open and only a sheet.  I would love a good nights sleep!
debrikkia
AlMyMen,

You certainly aren't alone!  My night sweats started a few years ago, but not all the time.  Now, it is every night, ALL night!  I too used to be cold all the time-slept in heavy jammies, socks, the whole works.  Now the window is open, I am in a tank top with only a sheet--and even that has to come off sometimes.  I'm with you--when does the sleep come?  Guess it won't last forever, but sure seems like it sometimes, doesn't it?

Have been reading some of your posts about night sweats and thought I would update you on my progress.I went off HRT Nov. 2002 and my night sweats got so bad I thought of going back on HRT. They were coming every few minutes during the night and every night. I decided to hang in there and see what would happen. About a month ago I noticed that they were subsiding and now I feel I don't need anything to control them. They are definitely getting better. My husband has even noticed. I can rest better at night. I use to not want my husband to cuddle with me because his body heat would start a hot flash, but now I noticed that I can have him hold me and not start to flash. So for me I feel this is positive and maybe hopeful for some of you out there . By the way I am 53. Gail
finola
Gail.. That sure is good news that the night sweats get better. I've been having them on and off for about 3 years, I'm almost 50..for the past few months they've gotten really bad esp. when I'm having my period. I've had them now each night for about 10 days, starting to wear me down. I kinda just look at it as something I have to go through and your news that they get better really helps. I'm trying to stay off hrt and want to go the natural way.  The information I get on here has been a blessing. Thanks!!
leanne0721
Are you ladies taking Revival?  My night sweats stopped almost immediately when I started taking it. It's been like a miracle to me.

Hi everyone!  I'm 35, no kids.  I've had nightsweats here and there for years.  Normally I'd wake up once and then I might not have them for weeks or even months again.  This winter I went thru 2 or 3 months of excessive nightsweats every night, it got to the point that I was nervous to go to sleep. I'd wake up 4 to 5 times a night totally drenched from heat toe.  I've have to wipe off, change my clothes and then it would happen again and again. I would also be freezing when I woke up. Normally I'd first wake up 45 min to an hour after falling asleep. I also experienced 99 to 103 fevers in the daytime hours while not sleeping???? My doc ran a ton of blood work on me and my CA125 was elevated to 57. Now 57 does not sound high as some women have had up in the hundrends, but they say elevated is elevated and not normal.  It is a sign of ovarian cancer. So, I had an internal ultralsound and pelvic MRI which came back normal. It scares me though as nightsweats are not normal, what could it be? I dont even sweat in the daytime when it's hot!!!  I'm scheduled to have the CA125 bloodwork redone next month.

Hi all, I found this thread and thought it would be the best place for me to post.......I am 47 and have high cholesterol so I started taking a cholesterol support pack from Dr. Andrew Weil which includes Guggilipid, omega 3 capsules and CoQ10 capsulesabout 8 months ago.   After a bit more reading, I added ground Flax seed to my breakfast cereal. Then I started having night sweats for months. I didn't make a correlation at first, in fact I got off everything for a month and a half due to a mild case of Rosacea, (Doesn't it seem all this stuff hits at once!!) Once the rosacea was under control, I decided to go back on the Cholesterol support supplements. But during this time I noticed my night sweats that I had had for 8 months were gone. So I introduced the cholesterol supplements alone, have been on them again and the night sweats haven't returned. I am convinced that the flax seed was triggering the night sweats. Has anyone else experienced this????I will add flax this week to confirm my experience with this. thanks, Cee
leanne0721
Cee- that is interesting.  Let us know when you add Flax  if the sweats return.  I had horrible night sweats (yes, I take flax) but they stopped when I started on Revival.  Haven't had a night sweat since- but I have continuted to take flax.  So I don't think flax has anything to do with MY sweats.
cbt131
Hi Leanne,I must admit, I am almost afraid to add the flax back in, it has been so nice not having the night sweats. But I will today. It would be an interesting thing to find out if flax seeds actually caused night sweats in certain people. Will post back in a week or two.Cee
MGU
Read your couple of posts about using the flax seed and maybe it causing hot flashes. I have been using flax seed for a long time and my hot flashes have not returned. I am not using Revival or anything else. I went off HRT in Nov. I guess you just go through having the hot flashes for a few years and then they get better. I am hoping mine don't ever return.

Night Sweats? Hot Flashes?  Do what my friend and I do.  Take at least 500 miligrams of BLACK COHOSH three times a day and see if there is not a big difference.  It is non-Rx, inexpensive and no negative side effects!  Also take Vitamin E jell caps (1,000 miligrams) each day!   She was getting them so bad she was getting about 4 hours sleep (off and on) every night until she was out of her mind!  Let us know what happens!
MaryO
You can read more about black coshosh, Vitamin # and much more right here on Power Surge on the Power Surge Recommendations page.  There's more help there, too, because black coshosh doesn't work for everyone.
MGU
Just a word about the black cohosh and vitamin E from my own experience. I tried the black cohosh and it caused burning when I urinated because of the acid so I did not take it anymore. Also the Vitamin E can raise blood pressure. It did mine when my blood pressure was always normal and never had a problem. My father was put on Vitamin E because the retina specialist said it would help his eyes and he had a stroke, which was severe, because it raised his blood pressure sky high. Just thought I would let you all know that because these things are over the counter doesn't mean there are no side effects. I am only speaking from my own experience.....not to say that this will happen to everyone, but it is something to think about.

Is it a night sweat if I don't wake up soaking wet?  But I am waking up almost once every night so warm that I throw the blankets and sometimes take off my top and go the window and open it and stand there for a while?  Is that a night sweat?  I am 42 and this has been happening the last couple of months.  About 6 months ago I started with just waking up early in the morning around 3 and not being able to get back to sleep.  About 2 months ago these overly warm sensations started.  This was from a person that has always been colder than most other people.  And I still often am during the day and even when I first go to bed. This past winter I sometimes I had to wear 2 pair of socks in the house to keep my feet warm.  I was colder than ever.  Now I wake up and have to shed my top although after about 10 minutes or so I will start to cool down.  Is this my own personal variation of night sweats?
debrikkia
Shady,

Sure sounds like night sweats to me!  Have you been to a doc, or had your hormone levels checked yet to see if you are in peri-menopause?

Go to the Quick Links drop down menu at the top of any page, and click on "Educate Your Body".  That might help you determine if it's night sweats/flushes.  Also check out the "Recommendations" page for info on what you can do to alleviate the symptoms.  Hope this helps.

Thanks deb.  I have an appt next week for my pap test and am going to discuss all my symptoms that I think show that I might be in peri.  The early morning wakings, the hot spells at night, more migraines, extreme breast tenderness a lot of the time and vaginal dryness.  I had a hysterectomy almost 2 years ago but still have my ovaries.  Sometimes I feel that people tend to forget that with having my ovaries I am still going to go through the other peri symptoms except for the ones directly related to my period.  And the past 6 months I have had a lot of them. Thanks again.

I am new to this site.  I want to know what I can do for night sweats...is there any food, vitamins, etc. that I can eat/take?  I get up and change my p.j's 3 and 4 times a night...now I am just sleeping naked. I took premarin for 15 years but had to stop because it was causing my breast to be so tender.  I am 65 years old and had a hysterectomy when I was 35.

Hi Everyone~~ I don't know if this will encourage anyone or not but my night sweats have suddenly stopped. I had them for about six weeks..4 to 5 times a night. I had been having them for about 3 years on and off.. but  this April and beginning of May was almost unbearable..i was getting maybe 2 hours of sleep each night.  I am not taking any meds..so I hope it's just that my hormones are leveling off.  I'm sleeping better now and feel in a much better mood. I will be 50 in October~~ I have just missed a period.  want you to know that there seems to be a light at the end of this dark tunnel..now I know it could all come back with a vengence but even having these small breaks is great!!  honeydrose..I know lots of women on here get relief from Revival..I tried the natural vitamin E and it made me sick to my stomach..but it may work for you. Hope you find something that helps!!

Welcome to Power Surge, honeydrose.  Finola mentioned Revival Soy - that's what I've used for almost 5 years now, instead of HRT, and it's been wonderful for me.  Dearest has prepared a wonderful page for us, which includes info on Revival, vitamins, various herbs, natural hormones, all kinds of things.  You can find that at Power Surge Recommendations (Just click to access)

Best of luck to you!

Honeydrose~ One way of coping with the dreaded night sweats and hot flushes is to think of them as a natural body cleanser, flushing all the accumulated toxin buildup out of your body. Better out than in!  Turning a negative experience into a positive one. I like this  thought  process. Helps me! wink.gif

I had night sweats 2 nights in a row, skipped a night and had another one the next night.  I always have them before my period, so right now there is a pattern to this, but who knows when this will change tho.  My period started this morning, and I feel UGH!

Am thinking about trying some vitamins to help with all the symptoms I have been having to see if they will help.

Hope the rest of you can find something that works for you as well.  Hang in there!

My night sweats are affecting my sleep considerably.  I'm up 2 or 3 times to pee and wake up several times a night - toss and turn and sweat, toss and turn and sweat, and in between get a little sleep.  It's not something I've been able to get a handle on, even though I've taken all the natural stuff, cream, soy, black cohosh, you name it, for 2 years now.  But the natural stuff isn't controlling my menopausal problems.  The other night I woke up at 2 and never got back to sleep.  My husband's alarm went off at 5 and I was still up.  Toss and turn and sweat, ad infinitum.  I'm making an appointment to go back to the gyn. - she had prescribed Effexor but I had adverse affects and can't take that stuff.   So I'm willing to take HT even if it may someday give me cancer.  I need sleep desperately!

It seems as though the patterns of my hot flashes and night sweats change from time to time.  In perimenopause, I had both hot flashes and night sweats, but they were controlled by Remifemin (black cohosh).  Once actual menopause hit, the black cohosh doesn't seem to work any more.  I wake up 3-4 times a night, either with a night sweat or to go to the bathroom.  Getting up tends to stop the night sweat faster, so I often do that.  I would give anything to be able to sleep through the night again and to wake up rested.  I've tried some over the counter menopause remedies recently, but most have soy isoflavones, and I think they make my hot flashes/night sweats more intense.  What have others tried that work for them?  I refuse to take HRT - my mother died of breast cancer.

I h ope I get this right this time. I have used many forums but for some reason it has taken me awhile to figure out how to post on this one.

I am a 51 year old woman who as gone from severe estrogen dominance to menopause. I am doing okay now that my estrogen has finally dropped, but now am experiencing night sweats and hot flashes. I am now 7 months into no periods. The estrogen dominant symptons were horrible and I am glad that that is over now. I had fibrocystic breast disease and horrible cramps from midcycle until my period started. I feel so much better now that those problems have ceased, but now I would just like to be able to get a good nights sleep!  I do take some vitamins and herbs and I think that they have helped to some degree but have not alleviated the problem. The progesterone cream didnt do anything for me. I have heard that many women have had good luck from takng it, but I took it for a year and never had any releif from my symptons.

Gordiesmom, Hi!!

Wellcome Aboard!! I'm so glad you have found this site!! I'm sure you'll enjoy the sharing...the caring...the learning...the posts, as much as I have over the months. It does take a little time to get use to the in's and out's of the board...but...it's not too hard!!wink.gif We're an easy bunch to get to know!!wink.gif

I know a Gordiesmom....actually two:biggrin:  One is older than you...the other younger;)wink.gif So....I don't think you are either one of them!!

I've been estrogen dominant, through most of my menopausal years!  Tried all kinds of hormones supplements....none worked...none helped, me!!I'm almost 56...had my last period a month ago..after 10 months, without!!

Having said that....I'm one who has had many...many problems with menopause and HRT, etc., etc. However, there are many gals here, who have much success with supplements....such as bio-identical type hormones....herbs...soy....etc.!!  I'm sure they will be glad to share their knowledge and experience with you!!

Since I'm very sensitive to supplements...the only thing I can take for sleep, is either a mild sleeping pill, (prescribed) or Xanax!!  I also take the Xanax, during the day...if I need it for anxiety attacks!!What works for one gal....may not work for another!! One thing I have learnt here, is, everyone is different!!Seeing you have already found out that the progesterone cream hasn't done much for your situation, (which I understand...been there...done that)!!But, check out the other threads...maybe a different type or combination etc.,  Some gals are quite knowledgable on the subject!! wink.gif

Best of luck to you....keep posting!! Your among friends, here!!

Hello Snowbird. I am glad I found it too. Thanks for the prompt reply. My username is because I have two wonderful Gordon Setter dogs. They are my husbands hunting dogs, but also great family pets.

I have only just begun reading the posts on this forum. This seems to be a very active forum and I am glad I managed to find it. I will be looking forward to getting into some of the chat discussions.

I didnt mention that I am also hypothyroid (hashimotos) known for 26 years and there is most defenitely a relationships between hormone problems and thyroid problems. I have been a member of Mary Shomons thyroid board practically from its  origin and it is amazing at how many women with thyriod disease have alot of problems with pms,  hormones, peri-menaopuse, and menopause. I guess it has something to do with one certain hormone that controls both of these functions.

I hope I will learn from this forum and be able to contribute some ideas and my insight as well.

jeanne
Hi gordiesmom,Guess I'd have to be muffin, tripper, and scooters mom:) they are my sweet cats.Wish I could give you some tips on what can help you sleep. I can say what helps me and maybe you can try it. I take 1/2 an ExcedrinPM and a .25mg xanax if i REALLY can't sleep. Usually just for a bit restless night I just take the 1/2 ExPM. I have a prescription for amitryptiline it leaves me kind of groggy the next day though so I have only taken 2 of those in 3 months. I have heard that melotonin helps, but haven't tried it myself. I'm sure you will get some more good ideas from the ladies here. I kind of made up my own remedy and so far I at least get 6 hours as opposed to the 4 I used to get.Hope you find relief for the most common problem we all seem to share from menopause. Hugs, jeanne

Welcome GordiesMom...I too was Estrogen Dominant for 10 years before I began the serious Estrogen decline into Meno.  I am now two years post and am having, like you, hot flashes and sweats for the first time    I have had trouble taking any kind of HRT, herbs or Soy. mad.gif The only thing that calms my whirring head is Xanax on an as needed basis. I have had insomnia for 12 years now.  I tried something new last night which worked like a charm.  I rubbed a little Estrogen cream into my right wrist.  I slept for 9 hours. I figured that now that I am having hot flashes and sweats ,I am low on Estrogen....but I know my hormones flux and I will not be using the Estrogen Cream on a steady basis...I actually can't use the pill form or soy because of being radically sensitive to any form of Estrogen as it builds up in my system.  Something that I haven't been able to figure out yet is when I have a big day coming up, I will lay awake all night being nervous...nothing puts me to sleep ; not pills ,cream ,milk ,melatonin...Drives me bonkers and then I am wiped out the next day which in turn makes the anxiety worse. I sometimes believe that stress, good or bad, gets my adrenals going and it's like I have been wired .....truly chemical.

All of us meno sisters are so different and what works for one, may not work for another.  Reading the boards here is very educational and it has always made me feel like I am not alone and not crazy

I am the mom of a Norweign Elk Hound named Elke and a crazy cat named Tweeker....love those "kids" as they listen to me rant and rave a lot...lol

Has anyone tried reducing their caffiene and sugar intake?I started to notice a pattern of nightsweats when I would eat something sweet late in the evening. I've cut way back on desserts and have tried to contain my Diet-Pepsi addiction. I've noticed a marked reduction in the nightsweats. I'm not any kind of HRT, still taking low-dosage birth control for PMS symptoms but I've been researching my next move and am planning on getting the FSH test soon. Does anyone know if you have to be off birthcontrol when you have it done?

Hello Gordies mom welcome to the boards. I, too, am new to this. I live in the north of England, but my birth father was a Canadian ( I never knew him) so it feels homely to be a part of Power-surge.  I have a similar problem to you. I conquered the daytime flashes( we call them flushes over here) with the herb BLACK COHOSH  and I posted a message  also and got some helpfull tips

LOVE READING THESE POSTS BUT I END UP WITH MORE QUESTIONS THAN I STARTED WITH.  WHAT IS ESTROGEN DOMINANT AND HOW DO YOU KNOW YOU HAVE IT?  GORDIES MOM,  WHAT IS THIS THYROID BOARD YOU GO TO?  DOES ANYONE KNOW ABOUT A PROBLEM WITH HYPERTHYROIDISM?

I drink decaf and I've cut waaaaay down on my sugar intake and still get the nightsweats, but mostly when my diet isn't fairly well balanced...like when I have too many carbs for dinner.

Last night hubby wanted a tuna casserole so I made it...added extra tuna for the protein, but I guess it wasn't enough, because I woke up around 2 AM with sweats.

It also happens when I have too much protein, like if I make an omelette and bacon or sausage for dinner with only one piece of toast.   It seems that if my protein and carbs aren't relatively the same amount, I get night sweats.

One thing I've been wondering about...

Does anyone else get woozy after getting up with nightsweats?  Sometimes I get them and wake up and have to get up anyway to use the bathroom.  Urgently.  I do try not to get up fast, and I'm OK for a few seconds, but then start feeling woozy and break out in a cold sweat.  I can never tell if it's related to the night sweat itself, or if my blood glucose is too low.

Up until about a month ago, I had never had a hot flash or a night sweat. Well now i have....I haven't had them every night but i would say at least 4 nights out of the week. Ugh they are not fun. I wake up sweating but not through to the sheets. The back of neck feels wet and it usually lasts about 10 min.Does what we eat at night cause them really? I just assumed it was a natural part of meno. It seems like my anxiety has calmed down quite a bit since the flashes (during the day) and night sweats have started. Wow maybe one was replaced by the other.LOL.What do you ladies do  for the night sweats? anthing? or just let them pass? Need advice these are new to me...Guess I am joining the club, huh??thanx. Yeah, welcome to the club, Pudge....  ;)

I don't know if it works that way for everyone, but it definitely does for me....I have to watch what I eat after around noontime or else.....

Here's what I did for the sweats and hot flashes....

Soy.

That's it.

I had been taking soy supplement (750 mg) for a few years for hot flashes not really expecting any results.  Well, it worked!  Or maybe I just thought it did....really, I thought it must be all in my mind so I stopped the soy...the hot flashes came back.  Started taking it, they stopped.

So last November I stopped again, worried that the soy might be adversely affecting my thyroid (from stuff I had read)

Whoa!!!!  hot flashes back , worse than ever....and a new addition...night sweats on top of it.

So about three weeks ago I got really tired of it all and started up with the soy again.  Night sweats are almost non existent.  When I get them, it's not as severe as before....and definitely not as often.  Maybe two times in three weeks where before it was almost every night.  Hot flashes almost gone too.

Truly, I am amazed....

Soy may not work for you....I've read that soy protein is actually better than the supplements.  But the soy supplement works for me, so I take it.

I hope you can find something that works for you too!  :)

THIS MAY SOUND LIKE A SIMPLE ANSWER, BUT I WANT TO PASS ON A TIP I GOT FROM THIS WEB SITE.  GIVE UP ALL ASPARTAIN, OR NUTRASWEET.  I LIKE MOST WAS USING A LOT OF WATER CONTAINING IT, OR DIET FOODS WITH NUTRASWEET, AND AFTER JUST ONE WEEK WITH OUT IT MY NIGHT SWEATS ARE PRACTICALY GONE, AND I ACTUALLY HAD ONE NIGHT THAT I SLEPT FROM 10:00 TILL 5:30.  IT WAS GREAT.  SOME TIMES THE ANSWER IS SIMPLE, AND WE LOOK FOR THE COMPLEX.

Now that I know my username works, I'll try again.  I too find this web site a little confusing, but will stick with it.  I am 47 years old, and am going through menopause.  I have my period about every 6-9 months.  I have night sweats, but here is my question.  I wake up, and then after lying there for awhile, then I get the sweats.  It is not the sweats waking me up.  I can't figure out if it is because I am hot or menopause.  I have trouble sleeping also.  I wake up every night about 2 am.  I started taking ambien at that time, because I also suffer from chronic pain, and then my pain will start up.  So I take the sleeping pill that is short acting and I do go back to sleep.  I also found that if I eat something sweet before going to bed, I wake up hungry.  Please answer my question about the night sweats.  I am so confused!!
Norine
i have had the same experience, only the sleeping pills don't even work for me.  it's like a hormonal surge takes place at 2am and you just wake up thinking it's morning.  i also have joint aches especially in the knees.  i'm stumped!
gordiesmom
I have the same experience with wakiking up before the hotflash begins. It is like you are laying there just waiting for it to happen. I have now been period free (except for a fluke on in January!) for a year and half, but I still experience some hotflashes but they are few and far between and not as intense as before my menses stopped.

I do know that coffee is one thing that I really need to avoid now. I will drink just a cup or two in the morning and then I HAVE to stop.  Hot drinks such as tea are okay as long as they are caffiene free. I also do take herbal preparations such as MenoPoise, vitamin B complex, Vitex, evening primrose oil, red raspberry, and a few others.  I think sweets might aggravate the symtpons a bit, but I do not believe that artificial sweeteners or aspertame have anything to do with hot flashes as I have never in my life taken any artificial sweeteners
