Oh my God, I speak another language, don't I? I need Barbie on here to understand me! Duvet, I don't even know what you call that?It is the cover on the bed, a sort of quilt with either feathers or polyester inside, it goes inside a duvet cover!!The loo is the toilet, everyone says loo really, occasionally toilet.I think it is sweet when Americans say 'Bathroom' even if there is no bath there!

May 2 2002, 02:12 PM
LOL, ok, a duvet is some kind of bed cover, I guess. :) And, heck, who knows why we say bathroom... maybe it's the Puritan influence or something like that. I know Barbie is going to get after me for this. :cheesy:

May 2 2002, 02:18 PM
Well, I've always called them duvets, and I'm just a midwest girl! We also call them "down comforters" if they're made of down. And a duvet cover always covers a duvet. (logical).
Beth, I've spent a lot of time in England, and I'll never forget once when I was at someone's house and asked to use the "bathroom," they looked at me sooooo strangely for the longest time. Finally, the man said, "Why do you want to take a bath right now?" And I said, "No, I just want to use the restroom." And they still looked perplexed. "Restroom???" Finally I said, "TOILET!! I've got to use the TOILET!!!" We all had a pretty good laugh. Americans never refer to going to the toilet, always to the bathroom, or restroom. Like Vickie said, it's probably the Puritan influence.

May 2 2002, 05:33 PM
Ok, I have it now... a comforter. I don't know if it's because where I am from (San Diego), but I never saw a duvet cover until I lived in Ohio, and I don't think I even heard that term used there. I am thinking that Southern California might not really be into all those real warm type things, being that the weather is so moderate.
Funny story about the trip to England, Sylvry.

Night sweats for me are the worst!!!! I don't seem to have a problem to much during the daytime, but i'm almost afraid to fall asleep at night (when i can get to sleep) for fear that i'll wake up again sweating! I wish i knew when this all would end.

Hi All! I had a complete Abdominal Hysterectomy on Sept. 30/02, I feel great! About those night sweats.............my gyno put me on Estrogel............says possibly after about 6 months or so they should STOP! Hard to believe I know, but, hey! I have no reason not to believe him! We'll see how it goes.

I am 42 and have had night sweats for many years. I still regularly get my period. I have complained to my doctor about this and he never seems very concerned. I am just really annoyed at waking up several times every night soaking wet. Often I have to find a towel to lie on just so I can get back to sleep. I hate having smelly sheets. My husband complains because I want the room very cold. It does not seem to be quite as bad during the summer. Does anyone have any cures?

Well, I definitely do not feel so alone after reading this thread. These night sweats are driving me nuts, and my husband is not thrilled, either, especially since we have only been married for six months, and snuggling is out of the question most of the time.
I sleep with the fan on, and last night I had to sleep with a towel just to avoid getting a rash from being so sticky.. It is now about 4 PM here, and I have had sweat attacks every ten minutes since about 4PM yesterday. I am wet almost all of the time, and then I am cold. I use an electric blanket during the cold times, and no covers and the fan during the hot times.
I appreciate all of the suggestions, and will try them. Last time I asked my doctor about it, he just told me to "put up with them". Maybe I will contact Pete.
Someone suggested sleeping in a tub of water, and I have honestly considered that. I am desperate. I do not remember the last time I had a good nights sleep. I am exhausted.

I'm 44 and went through a period in my 30's where I'd have night sweats, then it seemed to come and go. Now the past couple of months for about 5 days leading up to my period, I wake up in a SERIOUS sweat every night - or even if I lay down on the couch for a nap (since I'm pooped for the week before, too). Am starting to have my frequent 'power surges' during the day, too.
Maybe instead of Night Sweats we can call them 'Sleep Shimmers'.

I'm so tired of waking up so early and being chilled. Don't mind the hotflashes during the day but waking up freezing can get really old. Just ordered some of those Active Womens Vitamins. Going to really try to take care of myself. New Years Resolution. I like sleep shimmers too, Liz.
Roxiebear
Jan 4 2003, 01:32 PM
Sleep shimmers sounds nice, but mine are just plain old nasty sweats.......
I also hate waking up in a sweat, but I avoid the freezing by using the electric blanket. It has been a life saver to me. I just take it off when I'm hot, and then pull it back on when I start getting cold........
Hopefully we will all find a solution soon..........I'll bet that if the doctors had to go through it, they would have found a cure by now..........

Hi Roxybear,Have you tried black cohosh? I started taking it about 3 months ago. It really takes at least 2 to 3 months to work, but it is really starting to help me now ! My hotflashes and night sweats still come- but not as often or as intense as before ! It also seems to be helping with my mood swings !

Hello my dear friends in meno, gee girls sorry to hear you are sweating so much, i honestly dont know how you girls can take it, i use to get them once in a while, then i had to get a shot of Lupron Depot and all hell broke loose, i couldnt sleep i was always drained out of energy was not eating and my attitude was HORRIBLE! i hated the world period, so the Doctor said he could not give me anything until i had my Endo-Ablation done he told me to take something natural, well what i took did not work! so after my surgery he gave me the whole sermon about the hormones this and that, so i told him what the heck i will take the risks because who is not to tell me that if i dont take hormones i wont get a heart attack, needless to say i got my hormones which are Estratest and Prometrium and never again ive had any hot flashes, thank God! because i thought i was going to die from not sleeping nor eating from just plain down feeling lousy. But of course not everyone is the same so will like to know how come you girls Roxie,Tex,Gemi, Freak (no offense, lol) and Suzie are not taking hormones for these symptoms. I have a friend that asked me if the hot flashes ever go away for good, frankly i dont think so they may diminish but no i believe they are endless, and i say this because my mother in law stopped menstruating when she was 42 and she is now 63 and she says she get hot flashes, not often but she still gets them, i guess you just have to be lucky like my mother she does not know what menopause symptoms are she never experienced anything this horrific, im glad for her, my beautiful mother is 80 yrs old and she is more active than me! Well my dear girls hope you all get better, and like they say dont sweat it. love ya all.

I think that many women are afraid of the increased risk of breast cancer, among other things. None of the recent news about HRT has been good. I went off about 4.5 years ago because I didn't want to increase my risk of cancer.

Good Evening Ladies: I was one of the first "responders" on this board, and that response became my lifesaver!! Someone suggested I contact Pete (the Power-Surge pharmacist) about natural (or bioidentical) hormones since I feared the breast cancer link to Premarin and other synthetic hormones. I started taking the bioidentical hormones over a year ago and thankfully the day time hotflashes and night sweats are GONE! Since that time, I've had 2 mammograms and 2 bone density scans, and both have turned out PERFECT (I have a family history of breast cancer as well as bone cancer, but not osteoporosis).
The choice to go with hormones is as individual as each of us. If you are dealing with the night sweats and other meno issues, and are handling them well and osteoporosis isn't an issue for you, then use the all natural remedies (black cohosh, soy, Remifemin, etc). If the meno symptoms are a problem for you and are interfering with your daily life, then RESEARCH! Find out all you can about the available remedies, try out the over-the-counter ones (you'll have to try them for at least 3 months), call and talk to Pete - he's a GREAT guy and knows more about women's hormonal issues than most of us do. Whatever you decide, make sure it is an INFORMED decision!
BTW - I am in the process of "weaning" myself off the hormones - just an experiment to see if the hot flashes and night sweats come back. I don't like to be forever taking medications. But, if the problems come back.....well....I'll be getting a REFILL!

Hi ladies,
Suzie, thank you for the suggestion. I will ask about the black cohosh. In the meantime, I have started taking premarin, dong quai, vitamin E, vitamin B, multi-vitamins, and a fruit and vegetable concentrate.
My sweats are not as frequent as they were. I really did not want to take the premarin, especially since my new husband's first wife died of breast cancer and it scares him, but with sweats every ten minutes twenty-four hours a day, I literally could not function.
On monday I am going to start going to the pool for exercise every day, and that should help. After a few weeks of that, I hope to be able to stop taking the premarin.
it is so nice to be able to come here and share with women who understand. I was feeling like a real freak.....

Roxie, there are lots of other choices besides Premarin, many of them are discussed on the
Estrogen & Hormone Replacement Therapy Board, the
Naturally Compounded Hormones - NHRT Board, the
Revival Soy / Soy Isoflavones and
Progesterone, All Forms boards, as well as articles that Dearest has posted for us at
Power Surge Recommendations,
Menopause Primer,
Educate Your Body and many of the Guest Chats (read the transcripts in the
Power Surge Transcript Library) have discussed options other than Premarin.
I think that your new husband is right to be concerned, especially with all the newspaper headlines that came out in 2002.
Best of luck to you!

Hi Pookie and everyone,In answer to your question about hormones - I did look into it. The natural ones like you get from Pete sound great, but my Dr. didn't want me to take anything because I have high blood pressure. He said it would make it worse - although Pete told me it would probably come down!!! I'm following my dr's advice for the time being until that info can be proven to be wrong!Glad the natural hormones are working so well for many of you . I really wanted to give them a try too! Hopefully with new research they will have more information that can prove their safety.

Hi Pookie, my night sweats are ok, not a big thing for me. The awful thing for me is the depression/mood swings which I get with PMS now. I tried Revival, no apparant effect, now am taking magnesium, and having reflexology sessions, and touch wood, things are better. I may try black cohosh too, I have heard good things about that. For me, things would have to be far, far worse than this for me to even consider HRT. I have never taken the contraceptive pill because I dislike the idea. I prefer the natural route for most things. As someone else said, we are all different, and I would never criticize anyone for taking hormones, and I know for some they are a life saver. Can't see me taking them though!!

Hi Pauline, I had magnesium recommended to me by a couple of friends who knew how badly I was sufferring from the depression and moodiness at PMS time. I just walked into Boots and bought one, it is called 'Magnesium Ok' and has zinc, B6, Vit E and other nutrients too. It is a one a day supplement, and contains 145 mg of Magnesium. Hope that helps!(PS - Whereabouts in the UK are you? You may have already told us, in which case excuse me, meno fog!!! I am in York)

Dear MaryO,
Thank you for the links. I will check them out. Another reason that I chose the premarin is that it was available to me at no cost. Finances are REALLY tight right now.
I am feeling better already. I still have the sweats, but only about one-third as often.
I wasn't able to make it to the pool this morning, but hope to tomorrow.
I hope all of you are doing well.

I have been having night sweats since august. At first, especially since we live in TX, I thought it was just the summer but here we are in January and I am still having them. I am 47 (in 23 days woo hoo!!) and have been having these sweats and also major insomnia....My husband snores like a bear and it seems to be waking me up more than ever plus I am not sleeping well anyway so I am definitely not thrilled when he snores. If I fall asleep first then I am fine but if I go to sleep after him, and he is snoring then I lie there wondering when I will ever fall asleep. Seems like he is quiet till I hit the bed and start to doze, he must just be waiting for me< LOL...because then he starts in snoring. And my mom used to say my Dad's snoring was music to her ears! I love my husband but i wouldn't ever call his snoring music! LOL!Which brings me to a solution-----I started to wear earplugs a few weeks ago and have been sleeping great for the first time in months. I wonder if half the problem, besides the night sweats, is that his snoring disturbs me enough to wake up and start tossing and turning. I have slept through the night now for more nights than I can remember since the summer.Maybe this will help some other insomniac out there,Cee

I had been on HRT for several years, but as a result of the new data that came out last year concerning stroke and heart problems related to hormone replacement, my doctor took me off of it a few weeks ago. I am surprised at age 62 to be having night sweats again! Has anyone else had this experience? Do they go away naturally after your body adjusts to being without the hormones?

Hi Ladies its me GG,I'm experiencing night sweats when I roll over. I use to get them and thought they were a thing of the past. I've also changed my progesterone cream from otc to a compound Rx. I use 1/4 tsp usually once in the morning. Then my Nurse Practioner suggested I try using it twice a day, since I'm Post. Do any of you know if the night sweats when rolling over are due to to much progesterone? Where can we go for information on what is to much or not enough. In addition I had my 3,000 mile check up last Thursday and she is talking to me about trying a compound estrogen because now I have atrophic vaginitis. Would appreciate any information you could share. Thank you GG

Irene- I just love you. You are such a wealth of information and I have learned so much from you. I have gone back and read posts you wrote a year or two ago, and you caught my eye from the beginning. Always there. Always helping. I think it's wonderful, and I just wanted to say Thank You. I heard about Revival from a post (and I'm not even sure where) that you wrote. I have only been on Rivival a short time- about a month. In that month my night sweats have stopped. I no longer wake up at 2AM for no reason. I had NO breast swelling or tenderness with my last cycle- none (and that has really been a problem for me), my anxiety/panic is less (I don't think that is because of Rivival, but because of the much needed sleep that I was lacking before Revival), my cholesterol went from 205 to 175 and I've lost 10 pounds! I feel like I should be a Rivival commercial! HA! Pauline on the panic board said how she can't afford it, and I felt so badly for her, because compared to the other products out there,it's not expensive at all, and for all the benefits, it's worth it 10 fold! Anyway.....just wanted to say Thanks. What you're doing is a really good thing.Leanne

Hi, Glad! Are you sure that this was the name? Could it have been Remifemin? There's more info about that in the
Power Surge Recommendations area that Dearest has provided for us.
Remifemin is a brand of black cohosh and it works for some of the women here. You can get standardized black cohosh cheaper, though. Women have talked about their experiences with Remifemin (and lots of other things) over on the Alternative Med / Vitamins / Herbs board. Just click any of those blue links to get to the information.

GG, Irene is right (of course, of course!) :) .
You can even use Revival if you're on a HRT too, because it provides benefits other than *just* those of menopause. When I was going off HRT about 4.5 years ago, I started by using Revival, too, and that made the weaning process ever so much easier.

Hi GG,I noticed your post re: night sweats and moving around at night causing them, I found this in Dr. Andrew Weil's website re: night sweats. His approach is integrated medicine, a combination of AMA medical and alternative. Here is what he has to say on the subject, you will see a reference to movement caused night sweats which is related to sleep apnea. But then again, how do we separate the possibility of menopause related night sweats from the sleep apnea night sweats since we are at that age!? .hope this helps.Cee
What causes night sweats - waking up soaking wet at least once a week?
Answer::
You're not giving me many clues to go on. Obviously, the first thing to check is the temperature of your bedroom. If you're a woman, I'm sure you realize that when you're approaching menopause, night sweats are just another version of hot flashes - the only difference being that they occur at night rather than during the day. Among younger women, night sweats can be due to pregnancy or can be a sign of premature ovarian failure-meaning you're nearing menopause ahead of time. This condition is pretty rare but could explain your night sweats. Beyond these strictly female explanations, night sweats can be a sign of many different kinds of illness, some quite serious. They can be a symptom of tuberculosis, an infection that's on the upswing in this country among people in crowded or unsanitary living conditions. It also can be an early symptom of AIDS, some types of cancer, diabetes, an overactive thyroid, and migraine, to list a few.
A number of drugs can cause night sweats, too, among them antidepressants and anti-nausea drugs.
If you're not taking any drug that might trigger night sweats, and if menopause is not an issue, I would recommend having a thorough medical checkup to rule out the possibility that you're dealing with a serious illness. If nothing turns up, investigate whether your night sweats are related to a sleep disorder called obstructive sleep apnea. Here, the sweating is caused by restlessness and movement during sleep. According to one estimate, 66 percent of people with sleep apnea have night sweats.
The only way to get rid of your night sweats is to find-and treat-the cause.

Hi GG! What's Fibromyalgia?
GGc0ok
Jan 29 2003, 02:33 PM
jimi, Fibromyalgia s a condition that affects muscles and their attachments to bone. Pain and tenderpoints at certain places on the body that are sensitive to pain. When I have a flare up I feel like I have the flu. Severe fatigue, stiffness and acheyness like I've been run over by a truck. One never knows when it will flare up. It is common condition and ususally affets women. That information comes from Arthritis Foundation.
