Full Version: Saliva lab results

I just stumbled across my lab results from Diagnos-Techs that I had
in March of last year. Can someone knowledgeable help me interpret
this. I'm 38 and thought that I had some symptoms of estrogen
dominance but these results don't look too bad to me but I'm not
sure. Looking at the results of the other hormones may give you a
bigger picture. Some are way out of range. I'm presently on HC
because the saliva tests that I didn't post here showed bad adrenal
fatigue. I just started Armour a month ago and taking iron for very
low ferritin levels, but that's all I'm taking for now.

Progesterone = 259 (65-500)
17-OH Progesterone = 31 (Optimal: 22-100), (Borderline: 101-130),
(Elevated: >130)
Estradiol = 10 (luteal 7-20)
Free Testosterone = 18 (Borderline: 5-7), (Normal: 18-20)
FSH = 369 (<125)
LH = >350 (8-30)
TSH = >600 (26-85)
FT4 = .25 (.17-.42)
FT3 = .22 (.21-.27 borderline low)
Thyroid Antibodies = Positive

Do you have the units for the test result numbers ? Like for the progesterone, the typical units are ng/ml ... yours look more like pg/ml. Is the estradiol pg/ml or pmol/l ? If pg/ml, your values and the desired range seem way too high.

The FSH looks very out-of-range. High FSH usually correlates with very low estrogen, because estrogen suppresses FSH and if the estrogen is very low the FSH can increase unopposed. Very high FSH is usually a sign of full menopause, you would not be having a period then. You might want to get your doc to do a serum FSH test, and TSH too since that is also out-of-range.

Here are what Aeron Labs considers normal for saliva estradiol and progesterone. Notice that the progesterone units are ng/ml, multiple by 1000 to compare to your values which I'm sure are pg/ml. Also notice the top range for premenopausal endogenous estradiol ... 8 for mid-cycle and 5 for other phases, in pg/ml. Converted to pmol/l that would be 29 for mid-cycle and 18 for the other phases.

Salivary levels of naturally produced hormones reflect the free fraction (non-protein bound fraction) of the hormone in the blood. Levels are about 1% of the total serum concentration (although individual variability is relatively broad). Salivary levels of those on oral replacement show the same pattern. Transdermal cream users show much higher saliva estradiol levels. Trough levels are just prior to next scheduled dose and were used to determine our ranges.

Ranges of estradiol in saliva for those with and without supplementation are outlined below. Estradiol is measured in pg/ml.

Endogenous Supplemented
Premenopausal Oral Replacement* 2 - 20
follicular 0.5 - 5
midcycle 3 - 8 Pharmaceutical Patch* 1 - 5
luteal 0.5 - 5
Transdermal Cream* 10 - 50
Postmenopausal <1.5

I have a thryoid problem so your "thyroid antibodies positive" stuck out like a sore thumb! Go to Mary Shomon's site for more thyroid information and great support boards.... At least some of your symptoms are very likely thyroid problem related...you could have Hashimotos thryoid disease and this needs to be agressively addressed....can cause fatigue, chills, heavy periods, dry eyes, internal shakes and more....all the peri symptoms.....lots of folks dealing with this so don't be dismayed ...there is help! Joan

Just to add: in addition to the antibodies, your FT4 and FT3 are very, very low! No doubt that this low amount of thyroid hormone in your bady can be making you feel quite unwell....again check out that site....you most likely need to take a thryoid hormone pill....again many start feeling well once they get on the right amount of thryoid hormone for them....Joan

oops, just notice you are taking Armour....yes, but you will need more than one month to recover....give it several and then several more probably with perhaps some tweaking of the Armour amount....I bet you will start feeling better! Joan

ohmy.gif Hi I just had the saliva test too. My progesterone was 1700. That sounds high to me..but the doc didn't say anything about it..Does anyone know anything about high progesterone? Help
