I have a peculiar problem:
My worst hot flashes/night sweats come whenever I go from a standing to a lying position or from a lying to standing position.
When I lie down for a nap or to go to sleep at night, for example, after a few minutes I have a horrible flash and sweat and can't get to sleep -- no matter how tired I am.
Also, if I get up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night, after being up for a couple of minutes, the same thing happens -- and of course, the flash just builds up when I get back into bed. Sometimes I flash and sweat for an hour and just can't get back to sleep.
Very often with these positional hot flashes/night sweats I also get a sudden migraine.
Anyone else have this pattern of lying down/getting up flashes? If so, any tricks to manage them? I'm getting mightly discouraged!

Yes I get that too! It is very annoying. I can go all night without a flush but then I get up to go to the toilet and away I go. I definitely always get one when going from standing to lying too!
I dont have a cure. Its probably to do with blood pressure changes though

I'd get all combos. Worse even was where all I had to do was think of a hot flash and I got one.
Certain herbs helped a lot. (check out the health food store and on line. Some will work for you some may night. Generally they do work for mild/moderate flashes)
But since my problems got worse I got ERT for these, and it got rid of daytime flashes as a bonus.

77th-earl - That is often when I get a hot flash too, when I get back in bed from a night-time trip to the bathroom. Or within a few minutes of getting up in the morning...by the time I make it out to the kitchen I just end up heading right on out to the garage for a cool-down! I also get them at times with certain activities; ie. running the vacuum sweeper, mopping the floor...they are too sudden, intense, and then quickly gone to be just from the physical activity itself.

Thanks for the input, all!
At least I know now I'm not experiencing anything out of the ordinary.
What an annoying thing it is, though!!

Oooooooooooo thank goodness I am not alone in this one! I was beginning to become paranoid that it only happened to me and what was wrong with me. I usually end up sleeping propped up with a bundle of pillows to stop the sweats which does help a bit although the stiff neck in the morning is not much fun.

I am SO GLAD someone posted this!!!
I have had this experience for...hold on to your hats here...10years now.
I have really suffered from hot flashes and night sweats (and day sweats!) very, very badly. I have other symptoms that are difficult to manage (very!) as well, but these flashes and sweats are horrendous for me.
I started going through menopause at 37 years old, when my mother died. I was fully (indicated by blood work) post-menopausal by the time I was 40.
All through this...and even now (I'm turning 47 in June) I have suffered with horrendous hot flashes all day and all night long.
I've tried everything except HRT. And I'm tempted at this point. I've just had enough. Sometimes at night (like all spring and summer when the weather has warmed) I can have five or more hot flashes/night sweats and hour! It's really bad. And frankly, I'm tired of it. Ten years is a long time with no relief.
BUT...I really thought the "positional shift" thing was unique to me. I was in fact afraid I had a pituitary tumor or something. (Don't laugh...I really have wondered!)
So...THanks for posting this. It really eases some worries for me.

I am so happy to read of how many others experience this.
I don't actually get many flashes and they are pretty brief and not too intense. However, those I do experience occur predominanly during the night, and ALMOST ALWAYS AFTER CHANGING POSITION, either rolling over in bed or right after I lie down again after a trip to the bathroom. It is a definite pattern with me. It hasn't worried me any so far - too many far more bizarre things are happening to me right now - , but it is still good to know that this pattern is so common.

I am soooooooooooooooo glad to hear others have hot flashes just from changing position in bed. I wake up and I'm really uncomfortable in the position I'm in, but I know that if I roll over, I'll get a hot flash. So it's a lose-lose situation. I get soaking wet from head to toe, but mainly my head. And all that sweaty hair. Now that it's summer, it's even worse. Anyone out there with a natural solutin to hot flashes?

Ahhhhh, me too! It makes me so mad when I get comfortable and cozy and then a flash hits so I have to remove the covers, then I cool down, put the blankets back on . . . and the movement causes another hot flash so I have to remove the covers, then I cool down . . . etc. etc. You all know the drill. I WISH somebody would do a study about this darn problem and quit giving us lame suggestions like "stick your head in the freezer" or "wear all cotton clothing". C'mon, with all the technologically advanced medications today can't they come up with something really useful instead of Viagra??? Sorry, I'm venting because I've had hot flashes now for nine long hot years and I'm fed up!!

ooohhhh yes, I go to bed cuddling a "cold" water bottle which has spent some hours in the freezer!
Then I get cold, then I get hot, then I get cold...then I get up, then I go to bed...then I need a drink, then I need a potty visit....oh happy nights....
I sure get enough exercise with the sheets and duvet as well, don't need to go to a gym!!
But it gets better with time...
Happy flushing!
